Taking Beck Civil Rights

What's Your Reaction:

Glenn Beck is taking back the Civii Rights movement. Which suggests he must have had it at one time, before it got co-opted by those pushy Blacks. Now the Civil Rights movement is beck -- er, back -- where it belongs, protecting the beleaguered White majority. Glenn Beck has a dream!

Liberation theology sounds good... wonder what it means and why Beck confused it with Obama being a racist.

If, as BSmith seems to think, there's no need for a civil rights movement in America, what's Beck taking back? Why should he bother?

In an email from my wise friend Peter:
Apropos BSmith, do any of the young righties have any idea of how thoroughly inequality was part of the legal system in the South, upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court, and maintained not only by law enforcement but by white terrorists? After Plessy vs Ferguson, you couldn't invoke the constitution. It took a helluva lot more courage for MLK to march than it does for Glenn Beck.
And if they're so hell-bent on freedom, why don't the wingnuts do something about the war on drugs?

If you want to hear from Beck's white majority, you need only read his followers’ comments on this site http://wp.me/pNmlT-mI which is critical of Beck and his rally. They are completely blind to facts presented to them if they are contrary to their beliefs. It is scary to see the hold he has over them despite him offering so little substance or truth.

MLK was about 'equal rights' NOT about being black. He was about meritocracy, of character, and of being allowed to compete upon a level playing field ... not about preferential treatment just because of colour, ethnicity, or history.

Sure. But the situation he was fighting to correct was one in which Blacks and other minorities started at a lower end of the playing field, and were not able to compete equally with Whites. Things are certainly better now than they were in the days of Jim Crow. But if you believe this situation no longer obtains, and that prejudice and preferential treatment for the haves has disappeared from the equation, you are probably not Black. Or you're Michael Steele. Michael? Is that you?

Jonathan,

Could you please expand on your view. My current understanding is that the U.S. Constitution in it's current form should provide all the protections that any person regardless of race would need. Would you say this is an inaccurate assessment? I mean perhaps I'm a bit naive, but it seems to me we have become a nation of laws. There are so many and they are so verbose that even Congress has a difficult time even reading the laws that they pass. I see nothing in the constitution in it's current form that would deny anyone any particular rights based on race or gender.

We are going into a depression and Beck is still preaching racial hatred. Beck, how is hating black people going to get us out of this republican created financial mess?

Exactly how did you get that from the weekend event, or anything Beck has said. Quote please. Just throwing out racist rants is not credible.

Beck is an ex alcoholic who has a TV show. He said Obama has a deep seated hatred for white people. Since Beck "just throws out racist rants", by your standards that makes him not credible.
