Apple's Next Chapter (PHOTOS)

What's Your Reaction:

No other electronics company -- no other technology company, really -- has dominated the past 10 years the way Apple has.

Which, of course, explains the buzz surrounding Apple's latest creation. We haven't seen this level of gadget geekdom since iPod's debut in the fall of 2001... since the iPhone was unveiled in the summer of 2007, since...well, whenever Apple CEO Steve Jobs, in his trademark chic-meets-nerd, jeans-plus-black-turtle-neck get-up, takes the stage and introduces his newest must-have-it gizmo.

Rumor has it that Jobs considers the Tablet/iSlate/iPad as "a personal project" -- "the most important thing" he's ever done.

"It goes without saying that we are living in an increasingly multi-media, multi-platform, mobile-centered environment," Henry Jenkins, a leading media scholar at the University of Southern California, told me in phone interview. Formerly co-director of MIT's Comparative Media Studies program, Jenkins is one of the foremost thinkers in convergence media. "If the rumors about this new product is true -- that you can go online, browse newspapers and magazines, watch video; that it's like a cross between an iPhone and a Mac laptop -- then Apple's most important selling point is that it's created the best media convergence device in the market."

What is about Apple?

Arguably tech's biggest trendsetter, Apple has revolutionized not one but four distinct markets: computers, movies, music and mobile phones. More than that, each product has given birth to an evolving digital-based lifestyle, introducing a new set of vernacular along the way. The iPod gave us the playlist, which we make and control. Who needs to buy a whole album when you can download the only three songs really worth listening to? The iPhone has given us thousands of apps, which prove just how silly and creative and entrepreneurial people can be.

What is it about Jobs?

Named CEO of the decade by Fortune magazine last year, the nearly 55-year-old Jobs is one of the shrewdest marketers and message-makers around. So much so, in fact, that some in the liberal blogosphere joke that Jobs would make an effective chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

What does all the buzz say our tech-driven times?

Not everyone is a MacHead, of course. Microsoft, Yahoo and Hewlett-Packard, Google, Facebook and Twitter, have and will continue to leave their marks. Others argue, with justification, that Apple is a closed-off, top-down company -- highly secretive and only interested in what it can control. Nevertheless, under Jobs' guidance, Apple has been instrumental in broadening and expanding our definition of technology -- the way we individually relate to it, the way it feels and the way it looks, the way it fits in our lives.

"No other electronics company -- no other technology company, really -- has dominated the past 10 years the way Apple has."

Except in computers, which is alleged their core product.

Funny the number of people on these tech pages who ridiculed the PC tablets that were displayed at CES this year (all of which, incidentally, had proper operating systems that ran proper software and allowed to them to be used as readers, movie players on top of being useful professionally) The world of tablet PC's was going to be revolutionized. What did we get instead? A color Kindle that runs an iPhone OS all and costs the same price as a decent 15" laptop.

Big Apple fan here, but this one doesn't do it for me at all.

First, I hate touch screens, so if this had a way to connect a keyboard, that would eliminate one negative, but not the others below:

Like, who cares about face and fingerprint recognition? This is totally useless technology for the average Mac fan, and all of my iPhone apps are so lightweight anyway, who cares that they'll work on the iPad?

Also, won't even run real apps.

And finally, free Wi-Fi spots are popping up exponentially, making it real easy to connect, so who needs the G3?

And finally again, $600 to $900 plus? In this economy?

I'll pass.

Well, if you are a real apple fan you will buy it anyway. Otherwise you are just another discerning buyer.

The last Apple product I stayed away from was the Cube, so I don't stay away from a lot of them. I just don't see this doing what I need doing.

I understand that maybe the books thing is a big draw for a lot of people. But I just don't think it's going to be a blockbuster hit.

Mind you, I still root for Apple.

Anyone remember the episode of "Trigger Happy" where the guy is holding a gigantic cellphone and shouting into it? This giant iPhone reminds me of that!

No other company period. Apple may be top down management, but they got where they are today because of those of us who loved their first Mac, invested in the company, and have been on board since. I don't own every product they make, but what I don't have, my husband, daughters, and grandson, former son-in-law, next door neighbors, nephews and nieces, and every artist and photographer I know do. All one-time PCers, except the artists and photographers, by the way. What angry PCers don't get is that we don't care why PCs should be considered as good or better in your mind, if only we would stop and think about it the way you do. Macs have always provided a more stable platform, and this we have experienced in my family—the artists, the grade-school kids, the graduate student, lobbyist, realtor, firefighter, writer, and the engineer. Once you go Mac you never go back. Not until someone designs something that looks, feels, and works better. Get that product out on the market and we'll talk.

The Ipad is overrated.

I have Macs at home, but my Dell in the office is fantastic:

My IT guy maxed it out on RAM, new drive, etc., and now it only takes like 10 minutes to boot up.

Mind you, this could be perceived as a negative compared to my Mag G5 at home which boots in about 2 minutes, but these are 8 minutes at the office that I don't have to work.

In addition, the Dell's frequent viruses and sluggish operation also put it head-and-shoulders above the Mac as far as actually having to do and accomplish any work.

(Forgive them Lord, they know now what they do.)

"No other electronics company -- no other technology company, really -- has dominated the past 10 years the way Apple has." That is the most absurd statement. Sure Apple is great at polishing the box yet they come with no inventions. Apple lost the high end PC market years ago and their driver/hardware support is horrible as evident from things like the bungled blu-ray/HD-DVD support and SSD technology. Look at what drives PC technology; it is gamers. Just like formula racing drives technology to us regular folks so do does gaming PCs. The entire market is dependent on gamers and MAC lost them years ago.

You guys who like to list all the products somebody else makes that are better than Apple's:

I'll bet you also have a Betamax in your attic.
