If Only Obama Agreed To McCain's "Town Hall" Meetings

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

When John McCain grabbed the microphone out of the hand of that disheveled Republican lady in Minnesota who called Barack Obama an "Arab" he was sincerely trying to rise above the woman's racist misconceptions to set the record straight. But what came out of his mouth was this: "No ma'am, [Obama's] a decent man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreement with on fundamental issues." His response speaks for itself.

When McCain's ignorant tool, Samuel "Joe The Plumber" Wurzelbacher, agreed with someone at a McCain-Palin rally that if we elected Obama it would mean the "death of Israel" even Fox News had to reprimand him.

Lately, the McCain campaign is claiming that Obama's 2003 interaction with a Palestinian professor, Rashid Khalidi, has nefarious implications. They never miss an opportunity to link Obama with Arabs, Muslims, and "terrorists."

And then there's the McCain campaign's "voter fraud" histrionics against low-income African-Americans in the cities who are just trying to register voters. Voter suppression is the Republicans' bread and butter and the attacks on ACORN are just subterfuge.

And let's not forget Ashley Todd, the 20 year old Young Republican volunteer in Pittsburgh who carved a backwards "B" on her own cheek to fake an assault by a rampaging black Obama supporter, and how the McCain campaign jumped at the chance to milk the hoax for maximum political effect.

And when John McCain and Sarah Palin say that Obama will turn the Internal Revenue Service into "a giant welfare program" they choose their words carefully and know exactly what they are saying.

And when they slam "community organizers" as second-rate people no one on the campaign staff bothers to inform them that they are dissing people from our nation's history like Samuel Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Cesar Chavez.

And don't forget the phony pamphlets that have popped up pretending to come from the Obama campaign and trying to scare white voters in swing neighborhoods of swing states.

And there was also a fake broadsheet pretending to be from the state of Virginia falsely alerting voters in African-American precincts that due to high voter turnout Democrats and Independents will be voting on November 5th instead of the 4th.

And out on the stump Sarah Palin likes to talk about Obama's "early surrender in Iraq" and his secret plan to "gut" the defense budget. She also talks about how terrible it will be for the nation if the "Democrat Party" takes power. Nobody hurls red meat to her supporters better than Sarah Palin. She fuses together the cluelessness of Elisabeth Hasselbeck with the meanness of Susan Molinari. I hope the Republicans nominate Palin in 2012.

Add to this mix of McCain campaign slime the accusations about Obama's ties to Bill Ayers, his relationship to Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the questions about his country of birth and his "true" religion, the charge of being a "socialist" and sympathetic to "terrorists," and what we have is one of the most vicious, dishonest, and mean-spirited presidential campaigns in American history.

It is fitting that at the miserable close of the George Bush-Karl Rove era we are finally seeing, at long last, the Republican Party's true colors divorced from the verbal pabulum of "compassionate conservatism" and "reaching across the aisle." McCain and Palin, Hannity and O'Reilly, Limbaugh and Medved are singing to the choir, spewing their bile in an endless loop inside an echo chamber whose walls are closing in all around them. The party is shrinking. It's becoming whiter and more intolerant at a time when the country is moving in the opposite direction.

But McCain sticks to his absurd story that it was Obama who forced his hand. It is Obama's fault that McCain had to embark on one of the most fiercely negative campaigns in history.

If only Obama agreed to appear with his esteemed opponent in the series of "Town Halls" that McCain proposed at the beginning of the campaign.

All of this unpleasantness could have been avoided.

And if Obama had been less charismatic and celebrity-like, McCain would never have selected the unvetted and unqualified actress and governor Sarah Palin to attract attention to his campaign. That Barack Obama has some nerve putting McCain in the position of having to go negative with a vice presidential nominee who has helped to sink his candidacy.

It was said earlier in this election cycle by his people "John McCain does not speak for the campaign." It's become exceedingly clear as this cycle progressed that he indeed did not. There's little doubt if McCain were to win the election he also would not speak for a McCain Administration. The vast majority of his campaign has been comprised of gimmicks, smears and dirty tricks. McCain policy position, very few, just more smears, gimmicks and dirty tricks. Sarah Palin(Country First my eye), Joe the Plunger(liar, doesn't pay his taxes, not even a plumber) Voter Suppression(this truly is anti-American.) John McCain's campaign has been a disgrace to him but more importantly to the United States of American. The country's in the "pits" because of their "bull", JOE the PLUNGER needs to go stand in the corner behind the toilet. Voter Suppression is anti-American !!!

After those 3 debates Mc Cain should be thanking O bama for not taking more opportunities to make him look old and angry.

Everytime McCain whines about Sen. Obama's refusal to play the town hall meeting game and McCain whine about Sen. Obama's refusal to accept public financing I laugh. McCain comes across as a grumpy, obdurate and petulant whiner.

whine, whine, whine

somebody please give McCAin some cheese to go along with his whine

I was driving home from school on the night John McCain whined on national TV regarding the alleged Obama spurning of the town hall meeting format.

My initial reaction was to pull over to the shoulder of the road and stop, since I thought I saw an ambulance approaching in my rear view mirror...what, that's just a WAAMBULANCE, carrying our dehorned maverick to the latest crisis need for a powder room to dry his crocodile tears.

I drove on home, only to find said WAAMBULANCE passenger on TV, wearing a deer-in-the-headlights expression, as if he was clueless as to what the word "zero" meant.

Harking back to the "town hall" whine...frankly it was a "blowaway" moment for me. I had to pinch myself to be assured I was conscious and not lost in some alternate sleep induced parallel universe. I was awestruck that a presidential candidate, I repeat PRESIDENTIAL candidate, would utter such a ridiculous statement, blaming his own shortcomings upon his competition's unwillingness to accept a meeting format thought to be favorable to him. Okay, sir. As PRESIDENT you will often, if not daily, find yourself in environs that DO NOT FAVOR YOUR BEST SIDE. If you want to occupy that house on Pennsylvania Avenue, GET USED TO IT!

...EXCEPT That... in reality.. that format DID NOT favor McCain.. He needs to thank Obama for NOT doing it!!!!!!!
But at some point I wonder if he knew it because he did try to postpone the debate.

What McCain honestly meant, was that he would run as positive campaign, as long as he was winning. McCain assumed the town hall format would give him a lead in the polls and with that lead he wouldn't feel the need to attack. But nobody can seriously believe that had Obama agreed to the townhalls and then opened up a lead in the polls, McCain wouldn't have trotted out all the desperate attacks listed in this article. McCain has put winning above all else, and has adopted an end justifies the means strategy, town hall meetings wouldn't have changed that.

That's so stupid--that McCain felt he had to turn up the heat on Obama because Obama wouldn't do the Town Halls. As if that's an excuse for the vicious smears he and his clueless sidekick have perpetrated on Obama. As far as Susan Molinari goes, I saw her on "Hardball" yesterday, and she was dripping venom. I hope Chris Matthews never has her on his show again.

Johnny has a small set of flash cards and he just cycles thru them, what ever he draws out of the deck at breakfast is the plan for the day. His one town hall debate he looked like an old man that all of the sudden needed to take care of something he should have before he came out on stage. Time to get back on the Double talk express and head for the desert... There is a cactus out there somewhere that wants to hear the worn out tale yet again.

If those ten town-hall meetings had taken place, then the poll numbers might just be higher in favor of Obama.
Look how well mccain, aka the Wanderer, did in their televised town-hall meeting.
The man looked lost.

If you've not seen it, you should check out the segment on last night's Daily Show featuring John Oliver on Community Organisers. Hit the nail pretty cleanly for me.

Zendem, Of course it helps to have a candidate with the skills of Obama. Teally as in the following?

The New York Times carried a story on Saturday, October 4, 2008 that proved you had a significantly closer relationship with Bill Ayers than what you previously admitted. While the issue of your relationship is of concern, the greater concern is that you lied to America about it.

The Chicago Sun reported on May 8, 2008 that FBI records showed that you had a significantly closer relationship with Tony Rezko than what you previously admitted. In the interview, you said that you only saw Mr. Rezko a couple of times a year. The FBI files showed that you saw him weekly. While the issue of your relationship is of concern, the greater concern is that you lied to America about it.

Is This your kind of guy?

I've read both the articles you mentioned:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/04/us/politics/04ayers.html?_r=1&pagewanted=2&oref=slogin

and

http://www.suntimes.com/news/watchdogs/757340,CST-NWS-watchdog24.article

The Ayers story does nothing to confirm what the media have already reported in large numbers about Ayers connection to Obama - they both worked on the same committee, they knew each other socially outside of their work(At least enough to attend a dinner at Ayers' house), but had no political connection at all. Even Bill Krystol has gone on record saying that despite the radical suggestions about Obama, he believes he will be a moderate President.

As for the Rezko story, Obama turned down a job offer from Rezko while he was at Harvard, worked five hours on a case dealing with Rezko's business, they lived next door to each other for a bit and Rezko has donated funds to Obama campaigns twice. I've not heard how Sen. Obama has lied about these(Maybe some links from you?), but his connection to both seems very tenuous at best.

Obama is the modern day Robinhood. He thinks you can make the poor rich by making the rich poor. He doesn’t understand the “pass down” principle of business. If a product increases in cost via tax increases on big businesses, it will be passed down the the “poor” middle class consumers (You and I)

I don't think that you'll make the rich poor. They seemed to be doing fine under the old tax-codes that Obama is going to revert to.

You are so right! Just look at how well those concepts have gone in the last 8 years - we are doing great right now!

When will people learn that if you don't screw the poor up front, the rich will get them later - DUH!

We should just give all of the income of poor people to the wealthy in order to stop this madness.

I like the article, but I've got got a problem with something - Rashid Khalidi is of Palestinian descent, and is a scholar of Modern Arab Studies, but he was born in NYC. Something the Republicans seem to be shy of accepting aswell.

"McCain and Palin, Hannity and O'Reilly, Limbaugh and Medved are singing to the choir, spewing their bile in an endless loop inside an echo chamber whose walls are closing in all around them."

Perfect description. Republicans, who are left in Republican Party, don't seem to understand that in a two-party system a party must by necessity accommodate diversity of opinion. Any drive to ideological purity is suicidal to the party.

Suicidal to the party and abusive to the electorate and the nation at large - the nation they claim to serve.

Correct. While I disagree with most of what republicans have become, I still believe two party system needs a vibrant opposition party to keep the other guys in check; if nothing else to speak up forcefully. This is exactly what democrats didn't do while republicans were in charge. Republican Party as it now stands will be unable to perform the essential duties of a loyal opposition party. Their drive towards ideological purity will make them an obstructionist party which will further diminish them.

The McCain campaign is the most offensive national campaign I have ever seen, and it comes as quite a surprise to me, given what I used think about John McCain. It is quite alarming that close to half the country is buying this.
