The Republican National Convention: Where Social Darwinism Meets Theocracy

Posted: 08/26/2012 1:14 pm

At the 1988 Republican National Convention, Vice President George H.W. Bush talked about a "kinder and gentler" America. Four years later Patrick Buchanan scared the hell out of the country by declaring a "culture war." In 2000 George W. Bush gave us "compassionate conservatism." The Bush stratagems were cunning responses to focus groups and public opinion polls that show beating up on the poor and the weakest among us can make people feel uncomfortable. In 2012 we can expect more culture war rhetoric, but it will be clouded by the soothing sounds of reasonableness and moderation.

The trick thus far for the Romney-Ryan ticket has been to pretend to want to "save" Medicare even while putting forth Ryan's "voucher" plan that would end Medicare, not only "as we know it," but end Medicare period. The lies and distortions about their schemes for privatizing Medicare (which have been swirling around Republican circles for decades) are the 2012 election's equivalent of "kinder and gentler" and "compassionate conservatism": empty slogans designed to beguile voters.

What we'll hear all week at the RNC are expressions of an ideological witch's brew, a fusion of Ayn Rand's Social Darwinism with the Reverend Jerry Falwell's vision of an American Theocracy. Rand glorified sociopaths. Falwell believed the Bible foretold a nuclear Armageddon. They've got no choice but to pander to their Christian evangelical base as well as to their corporate overlords; a bone goes to Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council while a juicier chunk of meat will go to the Koch brothers.

The Romney-Ryan Republicans are giving us Rand's Social Darwinist economic prescriptions, which hold that if an individual lacks the wherewithal to thrive in a "free" capitalist society that person deserves to die in a gutter somewhere, merged with Falwell's social diktats banning abortion (even in cases of rape and incest), gay bashing, a militarized foreign policy, and a continuation of the "War on Drugs."

If they advocated only the Randian side of the equation there at least would be no restrictions on abortion, gays could go their merry way, and everybody could smoke weed. Things like school prayer, the 10 Commandments in public buildings, abstinence-only sex "education" would be laughed out of court. Conversely, if they gave us a truly "Christian" set of governing principles, (as opposed to the Falwell strain), omitting the Randian Social Darwinism, we'd at least get a government that cared a little bit about the poor, took care of the weak, and might not be so quick to go to war.

As it stands, we get the Social Darwinism without the libertarianism, and the religious strictures on individual behavior without the compassion for the poor and the valuing of peace. In other words, we get the worst of both ideologies.

This epistemological schizophrenia is secular yet religious, amoral yet moralizing.

And lo and behold! The Republicans' idée fixe just happens to serve perfectly the interests of the ruling corporate elite in American society! It's a menu of ideas that give the 1 percent everything it wants. (The Supreme Court's ruling that money equals speech and corporations deserve stronger Constitutional safeguards than people codify this worldview.)

It's as though with every minute of right-wing talk radio, every 24-hour news cycle at Fox, and every spittle of words strung together by Romney, Huckabee, Priebus, Ryan, and the rest of them at the convention, they have set out to prove to the world that power equals knowledge, and the ideas that are the most widely disseminated in any society are those that best serve the narrow class interests of its ruling elite.

It's kind of funny that a tropical storm is heading toward Tampa right when the GOP is kicking off its lovefest. Since about 1900 the American people have looked to the federal government for help when their locales are hit with natural disasters -- you know, the government we're all supposed to despise.

May I add former President Bush's recent regret, that he wasn't able to privatize Social Security. Imagine what would have happened to Social Security if he had been successful. Romney/Ryan are closer to meet that goal - if they get the WH in Nov.

That is not good. Not good at all. Unless, of course you are a benefactor of Romney/Ryan, with the 99% footing the bill.

NB... I'm moved. That is a great compliment. Thank you.

However, I'm British, AND... what's worse, a Scot.

I did live in the US for many years and was American.

If competition is so great, why all the mega-mergers of Exxon - Mobil, Goldman-Sachs, Wal-mart, Hertz, Clear-Channel radio and Fow News corp, [big lies, big fear-brain-fog machines] and the fact that five major multi nationals own 80% of the worldwide media? Corporations are people who have to be well-qualified, schooled at their trade and tested for political attitudes and drugs. It also helps to go to the right college and church.

The - current (30 years ago it seems the republicans were reasonable bunch) - republican party is promoting evolutionary ways which will create a sub-class of people that don't think, refuse critical thinking, and will accept any lie and any stupid theory is presented with religion (whether biblical religion or the religion that sticks to a certain interpretation of the constitution).

The degree to which the Reps support their ideology by cherry-picking from philosophical ideas and self-serving interpretations is illustrated by these opinions of Ayn Rand:

1) she despised all religions
2) she was a strong advocate of reason and science (reason was the essence of her philosophy)
3) she supported abortions for women
4) she opposed all laws against homosexuality (disliked it but saw no reason for laws against it)
5) she was a fierce advocate for individual rights
6) she denounced libertarianism as anarchy
7) she rejected the label "conservative"
8) she distanced herself from Nietszche
9) she saw the initiation of force to be evil
10) she lived from 1976 to 1982 (when she died) on welfare and medicare

If you happen to be part of the religious, libertarian right then you have to be pretty selective to ignore that lot.

But you can ignore all that when she supported free-market capitalism and the idea that all individuals should pursue their own self-interest as the highest act in life - ideas she developed from items 1) and 2) above.

Who knew back in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries what the Puritans would morph into in this country? But I agree, we got the worst of that deal. Turned out that Botany Bay was preferable to that shining city on the hill. Ironies of existence.

Absolutely! randism and Christianity are polar opposites. I have no idea how they could possibly be reconciled in an honest way.

Agreed, Joe! But, that's the same as it ever was with the GOP!

The modern day GOP is based on a smoke-and-mirrors, empty posturing, rhetoric based, "perceived" image..!

The "Party of Family Values"?
Hogwash; corruption, sexual offenses, divorce, p0rn consumption; run rampant with them!

The party that "truly" cares for the Troops?
Hogwash; as their voting record in support of the troops shows otherwise!

The "Pro-business" party?
Hogwash; historically speaking, the US economy has generally done better with Dems at the helm!

And with good reason - they can pillage and plunder at their leisure with an electorate that knows nothing except for the falsehoods of religion and Randism.

It will be interesting to see how many fear spears are tossed around the convention. The conservative political animal lives and breathes fear as a political tool. From the colonial times and the loyalists, to present day America, the conservative will use fear to keep the masses scared and himself as the savior from whatever happens to be the "enemy" at the time. Of course, Obama and "socialism" is bantered continuously today.

FDR was right. "All we have to to fear, is fear itself". And the GOPer/Tea Pottie will make sure that we don't forget it. So, count the the times the GOPers will use fear in the convention.
