I Stand with Van Jones

What's Your Reaction:

Update: The NAACP has just released a statement reiterating their continued support of Van Jones.

Update 2: Highlighting the absurdity of this witch hunt, conservative blog Little Green Footballs is now disputing the chargest against Van Jones. When Little Green Footballs defends a liberal against attacks from conservatives, that really says something.

Like sharks in the water, a right-wing lynch mob led by notorious race-baiter Glenn Beck is now circling around White House green jobs advisor Van Jones.

On the surface, their complaint centers around Jones' background and statements he previously made as an activist. Specifically, conservative blogs and media outlets have seized on a harshly-worded petition Jones signed in 2004 demanding further investigations into the 9/11 attacks. Jones has clarified since then, saying of the petition that "it certainly does not reflect my views, now or ever." But this is little more than the right-wing manufactured faux-outrage du jour. Beck began aggressively going after Jones in the wake of a campaign targeting Beck's advertisers -- organized by Color of Change -- an advocacy organization Jones founded prior to taking a position in the administration.

Sadly, the Obama administration appears to be wavering in its support of Jones. This is not acceptable. A decision to throw one of their most charismatic communicators under the bus in a vain attempt to placate a racist witch-hunt would be both foolish and ineffective. Van Jones is exactly the type of principled and effective leader we need more of in government -- not less. President Obama should make a strong public statement as soon as possible, reiterating his full support for green jobs advisor Van Jones.

Statements of Support

Brad Johnson at The Wonk Room writes:

White House green jobs advisor Van Jones is under attack from Fox News as an "avowed radical revolutionary communist" and from ABC News as a "truther" with a "history of incendiary and provocative remarks." In an attempt to assassinate the character of Van Jones, the right-wing media are distorting his past political activism and cherry-picking Jones's critiques of the pollution and injustice that still haunt this nation. However, Jones's true record is one of turning away from anger and finding hope, abandoning division and seeking consensus.

David Roberts at Grist writes:
This is all about bitch-slap politics. If Jones drops out, think Beck or the right-wing slime industry will stop? Think they won't keep going after Carol Browner, John Holdren, and the rest--twisting and attacking every word and gesture from the Obama administration? "Uncovering" people as wildly caricatured leftists? Faux-populist fear merchants are like sharks; they have to keep moving, keep eating. There's no sating them. Letting Beck bag Jones would be like chum in the water.

Adam Siegel at Get Energy Smart Now writes:
Fox's Beck has turned his attention from President Barack Obama to increasingly vitriolic and deceptive attacks on a White House staff member, Van Jones, who has responsibilities related to Green Jobs. Beck's attacks are deceptive and despicable, on multiple levels, and demean not just Jones, but American democracy and the very concept of moving forward toward a more prosperous America, for both the nation and its citizens.

Martin Bosworth tweets:
read #VanJones' "The Green Collar Economy" last year & was mesmerized. It's a brilliant plan of action & I #supportVan fully. #green #p2 #fb

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom:
"Van Jones and Mayor Newsom are good friends and the mayor stands by him," Newsom spokesman Nathan Ballard said Friday

Sarah Robinson at Blog For Our Future writes:
But we know this for sure: If Beck succeeds in damaging Jones and Color of Change -- a decision that's largely in the hands President Obama -- you can count on this being the start of a fast and furious conservative witch hunt aimed at picking off every other progressive leader. What they'll learn is that this kind of minor smear is all it takes to turn liberals against each other -- and we'll effectively be in the position of letting the craziest people on the right wing decide for us who our leaders will be.

Joseph Romm of Climate Progress writes:
I am a big fan of green jobs czar clean energy jobs handyman Van Jones (see "Van Jones argues we can -- and must -- fight poverty and pollution at the same time" and "Must Read: Van Jones and the English Language"). The right wing hates the clean energy jobs message (see "Department of Energy eviscerates right-wing Spanish 'green jobs' study") so it's not surprising they are going after Van Jones.

Any person either elected or appointed should be of American values first. I have read and heard this fanatic Van Jones make statements that should have the Government WATCHING him not Hiring him. I enlisted in the service during the Viet Nam War and came home to voices of hate for our doing our duty to America. Today my elected President hires people with un-American values. I should have died back then so as to not have to watch my country change. Double standards have replaced moral leadership. I listened and applauded as our great nation showed the world that in America all are equal. The truth is Americans should be seen, taxed and remain silent. I must have fallen asleep for many years and missed the battle for America. Please be kind enough to let me know the where an when of the battle fought in SILENCE that America lost. Also if there are any survivors please send help to get me back to the America I was born in, I would hate to die on this now foreign soil.

Once again we see right proclaiming itself, now the minority, as the only Americans. We didn't have a battle, we had an election.

Charismatic communicator? Perhaps when he is preaching to the choir.I know little about the man but you cannot have given much thought to the words charismatic or communicator when refering to a man whose speech flat out name called half the country.I mean seriously think about what you are saying. It makes no sense. It's irrational to draw that conclusion from his behaviour.Sure it was meant to be funny, and it is in context of the speech as a whole but it is not designed to communicate universally ,a fact which is confirmed by him in his apology.Your claims of racist witch hunting ring as hollow as they always do from those that have an agenda that supercedes truth. When all else fails claim racism or better yet start with that,go on the attack with accusations designed to disarm any opposition due to morally superior position. It is one of the main reasons I stop being a reflexive liberal years ago after being tired of defending the fact I am white no matter the arena of dispute or cause at hand. Its tiresome and unjust and thoughtless.

I should thank Glen Beck for calling my attention to such a Patriot. Conservatives shouldn't want this fight they're gonna lose. That's if the media stands by this guy.
02:57 PM on 09/06/2009
Whoa...the man is a self professed Communist and from his his very mouth he stated so. I fail to understand why he is being made our to be some kind of martyr when in fact he is a racist talking bout the white man this, the white man polluting our brothers. Give me a break...puuuuhleeeze. I'm sure you have seen the videos of him, I know you aren't plain ignut. He was exposed! The only smear campaign was the one he made for himself, so say so! Tragic day, hardly....the man was plain outed and personally I do not want communists and haters having the Presidents confidence...oh, wait....he doesn't anymore (eyes several others). Perhaps it's too much to ask for someone to be 100% pro American and support the Constitution 100% as well, instead of spewing crap about the white man or black man, the Dems or Repubs. Stand the hell up and write articles that express honest, facts and evidence. ALL of it, not just what you think someone wants to hear. God Bless the USA! My bad...looks around....was this a letter to the editor? The idea of "Stand With Van" means stand with communism and I personally will have none of it. There are others that hold onto America and what she stands for far more qualified than a wanna be green man.

Green jobs are a fallacy. It's just like saying throwing a baseball through a window creates jobs for the window repair person and the person that has to clean it up. It really doesn't create anything, it just moves the jobs around.
10:43 AM on 09/08/2009
How is Spain's unemployment rate? Didn't they try to create jobs by going green?

I'm sorry, but Van Jones needs to lay down under the bus. There is so much at stake right now. And others who can do Jones's job for the moment. The faux media attention on this right now is like the Dems opening yet another vein. Ordinarily I wouldn't give them the time of day. But this is how the ants ruin the picnic. We need to show that we can center, focus, connect, on the issue--the really big issue at hand. This is exactly how the Becks of the world beat us. Distract, trivialize, and destroy.

I too am very disappointed to learn of Van's resignation.

I am much more disappointed in the Obama Administration's failure to go to bat for him. But then again, that seems to be their modus operandi - cower to right wing nuts whenever they roar.

I mean what good does it do to give Dems the WH and both Houses if their knees buckle every time a minority dog the size of miniature Chihuahua barks?
12:35 AM on 09/06/2009
i was very disappointed to learn that van jones has resigned, another victory for mccarthyism aka glenn beck and people on both sides of the spectrum should be afraid, since this is a slippery slope as anyone who has studied the actions of the wisconsin senator should know, someone mentioned that beck's next target is cass sunstein?
