A Barbecue Guide To Chinatown

(2) Comments | Posted October 31, 2012 | 9:09 AM

I've spent a lot of time eating barbecue in Chinatown, and the resulting expertise has cost me much of my health. Yet it was worth it. I've learned at great expense where can be found the greatest ribs, duck, bao, baby pig, and most glorious of all, char siu (roast...

Dickson's Farmstand Meats

(0) Comments | Posted May 26, 2011 | 2:08 PM

I visited with Jake Dickson to talk about, and eat, his meat some months ago....this tasting was the result. You can see I was very tired by the end of it. But by God the work got done! Jake will be part of Meatopia, by the way, so...

Akhtar Nawab Chicken Fried Steak

(7) Comments | Posted May 17, 2011 | 9:23 AM

It's not every day that a brilliant Indian-American chef who works in a Mexican restaurant can produce a world-class Southern dish. But such is the case with Akthar Nawab, who is from Kentucky and knows his chicken fried steak. Akhtar's work at La Esquina, by the way, is really something....

Chopped Liver at Octavia's Porch

(0) Comments | Posted May 12, 2011 | 12:05 PM

You all remember the beautiful Nikki Cascone from Top Chef. Well, she's opened a Jewish-themed restaurant in the East Village, the misleadingly-named Octavia's Porch, and I like it a lot. I really liked Nikki's chopped liver, better than the traditional version in fact, and so I asked her to make...

Dough Donuts: The Tasting

(11) Comments | Posted May 5, 2011 | 11:37 AM

I recently stopped in at Dough, the acclaimed artisanal doughnut shop in Brooklyn. I went there, talked to its adorable owner, and picked out some doughnuts. I didn't taste them though, until afterward. I wanted to judge them fairly and with total candor.

Nice Pizza

(5) Comments | Posted April 22, 2011 | 12:05 PM

Jeff Larson, our director, summoned to remote, desolate Bed-Stuy to try Nice Pizza. I obliged, grudgingly. Are there really that few great pizzas that I need to go to Bed Stuy? And yet, something special is always worth the trip.

Michael Lomonaco's Surf and Turf

(4) Comments | Posted April 21, 2011 | 8:17 AM

I like Michael Lomonaco, of Porterhouse New York, a lot. Who doesn't? But when he told me we were doing surf and turf, I hesitated. I never liked the dish. But look at the smoke, the violence, the searing! Everything about this dish, and this video, was exciting for me.

Social Eatz Burgers

(1) Comments | Posted April 17, 2011 | 7:02 PM

We all know Angelo Sosa from Top Chef, but before he went down that perilous path I had eaten, and appreciated, his food at Yumcha. So when he started a hamburger restaurant in midtown I felt I owed it to him to try it. And even if I...

Bubby's Pork Pie

(3) Comments | Posted April 13, 2011 | 11:10 AM

Well, strictly speaking, it's not a pork pie. But I like it better than any pork pie I ever ate. Ron Silver came up with a sausage, bacon, and more sausage quiche in a lard crust that stole my heart away -- in so many ways. He tells me it's...
