Marco Canora was defeated by Marc Forgione this past Sunday on Next Iron Chef. The reason? He cooked turkey. This fact, coupled with my previous hostility toward that poultry, inspired me to what I believe is my most passionate and articulate rant to date.

I felt bad for Canora. He'd been winning pretty consistently and then blew it at the end. Forgione was a roller coaster performer. He was the worst performer in a couple of contests. Let's see how he does as an Iron Chef.

I'm wondering why they added another Iron Chef. Jose Garces was added just last year and hasn't had much opportunity to appear. Unless another Iron Chef is going to retire...

Having just watched the NIC finale again, Chef Canora did NOT lose because he cooked turkey. Aside from a little snark about how his turkey dish should have had some crunch, the judges seemed to appreciate that he honored that tradition.

Chef Canora lost because his first two dishes were considered too sweet, because his venison was overpowered by juniper and rosemary, and because Chef Forgione had better presentation. Granted, a big deal was made of Forgione's "brilliant unpredictability" as evidenced by choosing to not cook turkey... but without those missteps by Canora, the turkey could well have been the deciding point in his favor.

Iron Chef works because it is a hoot. Watching Canora panic and yell each week was stressful. We, the audience, want to share in the fun these highly trained professionals are having in an exaggerated, somewhat silly competition. So, in the end, the winner was a good choice. I, too, was rooting for Ming Tsai but that, too, was a fair call. I'm looking forward to watching Forgione improvise and create. It will be fun.

I thought Marco would win just because he'd be better on tv. Joke was on me, but no prob, I wanted Marc.

For some strange reason that I have yet to figure out, Chef Tsai just never seemed to be hitting on all cylinders. I thought he only needed a little more to get to the top, but it was always missing just a little bit.
