350 Still Images Illustrate McCain's Anger Management Issue (Video)

One picture is worth a thousand words, and this is especially true when trying to understand the personality of a presidential candidate. Therefore, I invite you to view this video I've created from 350 still images of Sen. John McCain during the third presidential debate.

The third debate has evoked comments from both the left and right about John McCain's anger at Barack Obama. McCain's anger was most visible during the segment about negative campaign ads, diverse pundits observed, yet McCain seemed to convey an undertone of aggression throughout the debate.

Accepting that my perceptions may be mistaken, I decided to look closer at the video from the third debate.

Watching the video with the sound off was instructive. I could focus on the emotions conveyed in McCain's face and body language. My impression of McCain being angry most of the time during the debate was not mistaken, I concluded, yet I wanted to be more certain.

Facial expressions change too quickly for serious study. This fact frustrated me until I remembered one of my earliest photojournalism lessons. A still photograph often reveals more of the personalty than a motion picture.

Consequently, I've captured about 350 still image of John McCain from the video shot during the third debate. Keeping the images in chronological order, I created the video above by adding text at the bottom and music in the background.

You might wish to view this video at least twice. On the first viewing, just watch MCain's face. On the second viewing, read the text at the bottom.

Whether you agree with my text or not, John McCain's face speaks for itself.

Please draw your own conclusions about how much anger John McCain carries inside. Decide for yourself if you want to trust his anger management abilities as the president of the United States.

It is well-documented that McCain has anger management problems. Such a man should not be allowed in the Oval Office.

Very impressive, but don't get too mean like PALIN/mccain, Bush, Karl Rove and the rest of the Republicans who want to be the only ones receiving any distribution of wealth (taxes). They don't want any wealth distributed to the middle class in the form of tax breaks. They LIE and say Obama "wants to raise your taxes", but most Americans know they are only talking about the rich. God bless America.

You are absolutely right. Obama has been very careful to try to explain tax cuts as clearly as possible and McCain's camp always responds with twisted version ... and they somehow get away with it.

For those who have asked, the music in the background is "Mars" from the The Planets symphony by Gustav Holtz. -- Judah

Judah,

For pedants like myself, The Planets is a Suite not a Symphony ;o)

Brilliant, using "Mars" as the background. McCain is the epitome of the martial spirit- and that's not a good thing.

After the 3rd debate, I felt McCain was angry and really hated Obama and could not stand to look at Obama, much less talk to him. After all these ads, I still think I was right -- that McCain hates Obama and can't stand to look at him or speak to him or touch him.

I think JMac has to demonize his opponent so as to be able to continue in the slanderous campaign he's (not) running. Unless he's just completely psychotic, there's no way the "McCain of 2000" has morphed into this unscrupulous liar unless he can ignore the reality of his behavior.... which could be considered psychotic, too. Maybe the Mac of the past is the illusion. I don't know but all that's clear is he does not have the temperament or judgment to run this country at this time. Based on his presidential campaign, his vp choice in particular, I shudder to think.

I would like to know who is close to McCain. Who are his best friends?
He doesn't appear to be very nice to his wife or even to Sarah Palin.

Very insightful video; thank you.

perhaps McCain suffers from father envy just like GWB: both his father and grandfather (the John McCains I & II - he's John McCain III) were 4 star admirals, whereas this iteration barely made it through the Naval Academy (5th from the bottom of his graduating class), lived a life of privilege and protection from accountability in his numerous errors on and off duty (including crashing 2 planes aside from the one that was shot down) based solely on his name...

He certainly has a sense of entitlement which might explain his anger towards Obama, he who would deny The Prize that he feels he has earned.

GWB certainly has tried to outdo his distinguished father (who served the US in numerous capacities at high levels before becoming Pres.); remember his remark that he answers to a "higher father" when asked if he consults with George Herbert Walker Bush. For his efforts he will be remembered as the man who cared little for history's judgment ("we'll be dead by then") but even today he has to know on some level that he has been the worst bungler in the last 100 years of White House occupants.

Back to McCain: the anger thing goes way, way back if some contemporaneous accounts are to be fully apprehended.

Hi just a small point, J. McCain was involved in the loss of 5 military aircraft.
The first 3 are directly attributed to pilot error, the third in Italy I understand caused a major blackout of electrical power with J. McCain 'hotdogging' , flying low into electrical pylons.
The forth plane was lost on an aircraft carrier when a missile from anther plane on the flightdeck launched into his plane. The 5th was him being shot down over Vietnam, ignoring both warnings about SAM sites near the target and when on his bomb run he ignored the missile launch warning resulting in him being shot down. His injuries were the result of the ejection from the plane and assault when captured.

I would like to pose this question.
With all of his advantages, a father and grandfather, Admirals in the Navy, protecting him from being removed from flight duty, getting him into the Navy War College, the Navy did not promote him to a leadership role. If the U.S. Navy did not have confidence in his leadership skills, why should the American people?

what is a subtle (or maybe not so) addition to the commentary is the choice of background music: Gustav Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War."

Strange. I find it far easier to see McC's rage in his face in real time than with stop motion photgraphy for some reason.

All I ask is for all the angry old men who insist on fighting their ideological battles over and over again - to do it PERSONALLY - go grab a gun and go fight your war with your tired, old bodies - preferably on a deserted island, away from civilization.

Leave our children OUT of your psychological nightmares.

It is NOT in our "national interest" to keep your devils alive.

I'm 10000% with Obama too. Always have been- and I have to agree. This is reaching. I see no rage here. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I feel like our team is grasping at straws the way they do....

The only one I've seen any sign of anger out of is B iden when he's asked serious questions.

That's funny! You haven't seen Palin clenching her jaw in interviews, McCain's face about to explode from all his rage when forced to face an opponent, the anger flaming out of his eyes when he does? No? Take off those rose-colored glasses and then you will see what the rest of us do.

Sorry ... not seeing the rage from the photos you chose. I watched the debate and I do think there was some hostility. In my opinion, your video doesn't capture unrelenting anger.
