Carlos Santana Bashes Ronald Reagan, Gov. Jerry Brown and His Family During Induction Into California Hall of Fame

Posted: 12/14/11 12:11 PM ET

Music legend Carlos Santana shocked a crowd of more than 1,000 people when he bashed former President Ronald Reagan and Gov. Jerry Brown as he was inducted into the California Hall of Fame in Sacramento -- while Brown was standing right next to him.

It was supposed to be a night of celebration and inspiration for the sixth annual ceremony started by Maria Shriver and former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to showcase the innovators and celebrities from California who inspired the nation, if not the world.

California's well-to-do turned out to see a rare calvacade of stars come to the Capital City, including astronaut Buzz Aldrin, The Beach Boys, NBA superstar Magic Johnson and others. This year, Gov. Brown and his wife, Anne Gust Brown, hosted the event for the first time at the historic Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento.

But those in the audience in their cocktail dresses and suits did not expect to hear this from Carlos Santana, who was last to be inducted after being introduced by Oscar-winning director and actor Clint Eastwood:

"I grew up here in this California," he said, pausing to look over his shoulder at Gov. Jerry Brown standing besides him. "Watching Brown and Ronald Reagan not necessarily being... nice...," Santana said, slowly biting on the word and dragging it out for emphasis, "to the Campesino" (a Spanish word for farmworkers).

"Not necessarily being in harmony with the Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez," referring to the founders of the United Farmworkers Union.

The camera panned to Gov. Brown, who met Santana's glance with a serious, stern stare.

The musician continued in slow, halting words, "I don't approve of creating airports or libraries for Ronald Reagan and people like that because they were not... nice."

Smattering of applause here. But for those in the audience, especially the ones I talked to afterwards in the front rows, jaws dropped. People gasped. An inductee was dissing his host who was honoring him. This had never happened in the six-year history of the event which is meant to showcase the greatness and uniqueness of California.

Santana continued. "People who are nice are like Mother Theresa, Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta... for the highest good of all people, not just a certain race, but the whole human race," he said, implying many were anti-Hispanic in our society.

Santana skipped the red carpet. The next day, the Governor's Office and the California Museum both refused comment. The general feeling is that they didn't want one incident to ruin the overall positive, inspirational spirit of the night.

It's not clear which "Brown" Santana was referring to. Was it Jerry's father, Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, who served as California's 32nd governor from 1959-1967, or his son, Jerry, now in his second incarnation as governor -- once from 1975-1983, now from January 2011 to present. A Santana spokesman said the musician was talking about Pat Brown because they clashed on immigration policies. But by the turn of the head and subtle sneer Carlos gave Jerry on stage, one might think he was the target, although a Santana spokesman issued a statement saying he was not. Nevertheless, Gov. Brown comes from a tight-knit political family. His father was a governor. His sister, Kathleen, unsucessfully ran for governor. As in any family, a slight to one Brown was a blow to all.

Maria Shriver inaugurated the California Hall of Fame six years ago to bring attention to the innovators, visionaries, legends of art, music, film and sports who defined the state and the romantic lure of the West.

Among the inductees into the first Class of 2006 were Eastwood, Chavez and Walt Disney. Other honorees over the last five years included Steve Jobs, Ansel Adams, John Steinbeck, Robert Mondavi, Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson, Tiger Woods, John Wayne, Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, George Lucas, Harvey Milk, Mark Zuckerberg and Pat Brown. All of the past events were lovefests, respectful and praising the works of the people honored for their contributions to our world.

Santana also skipped the after party. Some of his last words of his controversial speech were "I will go back to harmony, and graciousness and compassion."

For many, it was not a very gracious night.

Good job Santana for speaking truth with Brown standing right there. Jerry Brown is the person most responsible for California's current fiscal and humanitarian crisis. He is the person who promoted and caused to pass the determinate sentencing laws that overfilled the prisons and jails, a fact that he admitted to during his campaign. Brown is also the person who gave the prison guards raises while firing 22,000 teachers and cutting human services and education. He is building $7 billion in new prisons which will cost billions more per year to operate. We, the people, need to recall him. Check you facts, Jerry Brown is not the reason we are in this mess. So easy to blame one person.

This is a man of true independent thought who kowtows to no one. He feels that his people have been trampled on by the white society of California for years, and he is certainly right about that. He has always supported Cesar Cahvez and the migrant Mexican farmers so this should come as no surprise. He should be more annoyed by Rolling Stone for not putting him among their Top 10 guitarists of all time. Why should someone who has accomplished all he has feel that he has to "be nice" when he feels compelled to speak his mind? I don't think anyone can argue his points or that he is truly a man of peace and vision. Though I wish he had not gone pop with these duet albums...

Santana & his bands have always been my personal favorites. Have all his albums and have seen him many times. But as a person he has proved to be 'not so great'. Many past band members would conquer. This was classless of him

Right around the time Carlos was getting rich, so was Linda Ronstadt, who was also dating Jerry Brown at the time. Linda was from an anglo/hispanic family of ranchers in AZ. She's all about latino influences and if Jerry wasn't so cool, she wouldn't have had anything to do with him. She's all about NICE.

Shame on you CARLOS!!!

I have lived in Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, and several other countries. If you want to talk about poor treatment, be a non-native resident in one of these countries. I speak fluent Spanish, I'm polite, I spent my hard-earned money locally, yet I was frequently treated quite poorly regardless. Especially in Venezuela.
I grew up in California during this time frame and am quite familiar with these historical events. The story is a good example as to why most entertainers should simply entertain. All too often they can't resist the temptation to open their mouths and wind up looking foolish. In addition, because what they play is drowned out by what they say, many of us are put off enough that we will take our entertainment dollars elsewhere. Not only was he not gracious, his actions weren't very. . . nice.

I agree with the Reagan part, he was, contrary to the "popular" version, quite a despicable person. Just ask the tens of thousands of Nicaraguan civilians that were slaughtered because of him. But Jerry Brown? I dig him. He's not perfect, but he's far from the abomination that reagan was. He must've been referring to Pat Brown. BTW, if there's no certainty to WHICH Brown he was referring to, why does the headline read "BASHES JERRY BROWN"???

True, it is an abomination to name any building or center in the University of California for Reagan, as he did everything in his power to destroy the University when he was governor.

Google his 'bloodbath' comment about the Berkeley when he was governor.

Maybe Santana can put aside his very lucrative career and become a public servant. It's a thankless low pay job. if you're doing it right, instead of using it for personal gain.

And for a man who sells a shoe line made in third world countries, he hasn't got much room to criticize. I don't recall China winning any awards for human rights.

He should spend his time criticizing Carlos "Slim" Helu or the presidents and PTB in Mexico. Or better yet, what about the brazen drug cartels who kill people in broad daylight in the streets and villages of Mexico. They're the ones running a country that is so unlivable that people run away to to the US to take agricultural jobs.

Maybe carlos needs a medical weed script, or, he has one and took too many tokes off the bong. Not very good manners for an invited guest.

So sad for pols when, very occasionally, a man with actual beliefs speaks truth to power, when all they expected was pro forma gratitude and at least a l'il praise.
