How To Take Care Of Your Eyelashes, Because You Really Should

(0) Comments | Posted February 18, 2016 | 11:15 AM

If eyes are the windows to our souls, then we definitely want to make sure we're taking care of the curtains -- aka our eyelashes

Beyond enhancing the appearance of eyelashes with mascara, we often don't think about their general health. But we should. Lashes help protect our eyes from foreign objects -- plus when they look good, we look good.

In celebration of National Lash Day (Feb. 19), we got a few burning questions answered about eyelashes by Clementina Richardson, a celebrity lash expert and founder of Envious Lashes in New York City.

Check them out below and make sure to keep your curtains lashes in good shape.

HuffPost: Should we be taking care of our lashes on a daily basis?Richardson: In order to maintain healthy lashes, thoroughly clean your face, including the eye area, before going to bed every night. Look for cleansers specially recommended for eyes and clean the eyes gently with a sponge to remove dirt and makeup. Also make sure not to tug at your lashes too much when applying makeup or taking makeup off at the end of the day. Just like you would apply night cream or serum to your face, applying a conditioning serum before bedtime is key.

Is there a common mistake people make that leads to lash loss?
Yes, excessive rubbing of the eyes or picking off mascara is a big no-no. Being too aggressive when cleansing off mascara can also lead to lash loss.

What are some ways to promote lash growth?
Use a lash conditioning serum that promotes density, length and most importantly, diameter of the natural lashes.

Are there dangerous ingredients we should be avoiding when buying mascara?
Avoid mascara that contains ethel alcohol because it’s very drying, causing the lashes to be brittle and resulting in breakage. Look for mascaras that are also free of parabens and phthalates.

What's the best way to keep lashes clean and healthy?
Be sure to cleanse your lashes daily with a gentle cleanser. Baby shampoo is a great alternative -- it's gentler on the eyes. It's also important to avoid sharing your makeup with others to avoid cross contamination.

Is eyelash dandruff a real thing?
Lash dandruff just refers to flaking eyelids. But it can come from a number of things: Seborrheic dermatitis (an overgrowth of yeast), an allergy to eye makeup or eye products, an autoimmune problem called Sjogren's syndrome which is an autoimmune disease, psoriasis, or Blepharitis, a chronic inflammation caused by bacteria. An individual who has these symptoms should see an ophthalmologist.

Miss Piggy Schools Us On The Art Of Taking Selfies (And Just About Everything Else)

(0) Comments | Posted February 16, 2016 | 11:29 AM

Miss Piggy needs no introduction. The matriarch of The Muppets has been a bona fide superstar since she took Hollywood by storm in the '70s.

These days she's been busy filming ABC's "The Muppets," which chronicles her soaring career as the host of the talk show "Up Late with Miss Piggy." And when she's not chit-chatting with A-list celebrities, she's acting as a muse to a host of fashion designers like Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen and Christian Louboutin.

And although Miss Piggy is sadly no longer romantically involved with Kermit (fingers crossed they get back together soon), her single status hasn't affected her awesomeness. There is just a je ne sais quoi about this pig that we can't get enough of.

We caught up with Miss Piggy to chat about her personal style, why getting a full night's sleep is so important and how to take the perfect selfie.

HuffPost: Where do you shop for clothes that flatter your body shape?

Miss Piggy: I mostly work with designers who create clothes especially for moi. But when I do go shopping, the staff always knows that if they want to sell me anything they had better start flattering me and my body shape the moment I walk in the store.

Who are your favorite designers?

Oh, I adore -- and I’m creative muse -- to so many designers! There’s Vivienne Westwood, Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin, Jeremy Scott, Jason Wu, to name just a few who’ve been inspired by moi. And I’m especially fond of a brand new designer whom I’ve just discovered. His name is Uncle Deadly, and he’s my wardrobe supervisor/dresser on “Up Late with Miss Piggy." He’s planning to launch his own line of haute couture -- Uncle By Deadly. Trust moi, it’s the next big thing!

What word of advice would you give to women who are not as confident as you are when getting dressed?

Love yourself. Naturally, I have it easy because I have me to love. But you’re pretty good too. I know you work hard to be the best possible you; if someone doesn’t appreciate that, who needs them? As it says in the song: “The greatest love of all / Is easy to achieve / Learning to love yourself / Is the greatest love of all” (FYI: I also believe “the children are our future” but since that has nothing to do with your question, I left that part of the song out.)

What has been your favorite red carpet moment?

Well, I learned so much about the red carpet from my dear friend, the late Joan Rivers! She was fearless. And so, I dedicate my favorite red carpet moment to her. Recently I was at a major awards show. Who can remember which? All I recall is that it involved statues, stars and endless speeches. And as I was strutting and posing, the unthinkable happened: my dress ripped and my derriere was visible.  At first I was devastated, but then I thought WWJRD (What Would Joan Rivers Do) -- and I decided to embrace the moment and make it work!  The result: #UnveilTheTail

What are your thoughts about contouring?

I love contouring. I’ve always believed in highlighting my best features by any means possible. Since I have so many “best” features, it can be difficult to decide which to highlight. But it’s well worth the effort -- especially if, like moi, you have your own team of stylists, make-up artists and special effects experts.

Do you wear fake lashes, or are those your natural ones?

There is nothing natural about any part of me, especially my lashes. Everything’s been remodeled, reconditioned, upgraded and embellished.

How do you figure out how to style your hair, especially considering your pronounced ears?

I’m not sure what you mean by “pronounced” ears? If you mean “perfect," then I couldn’t agree more. But if that’s some kind of code for “honking big ears”…well! How’d you like your hair styled with a weedwacker?  … Oh, you meant “perfect”! I thought so. How do I style it? I have no idea. I wake up, my beauty team surrounds me and about an hour later -- voila, it’s moi!

Sleep is so important. How much beauty sleep to you get every night?

I get 12 hours of sleep during the night, and then take a one-hour nap just before I go on stage for “Up Late with Miss Piggy." And if my guest is boring, I sometimes catch a few winks while they’re jabbering away.

Any must-have beauty products?

There is only one must-have beauty product: a mirror.  Everything else is just smoke, mirrors and spackle.

When do you feel the most beautiful?

At night. When there is full moon outside and I’m perfectly backlit by klieg lights and a couple of baby spotlights. When you’re a star, you leave nothing to chance.

Finally -- you're a selfie queenWhat's the key to taking the perfect selfie? Teach us your ways.

Make sure I’m in it. And, of course, use a professional photographer. I’ve got the fabulous Annie Leibovitz on a retainer to take all my selfies. What that girl can do with a cell phone and a selfie-stick is breathtaking!

6 Ways To Look Refreshed First Thing In The Morning, No Makeup Required

(0) Comments | Posted February 4, 2016 | 12:05 PM

As much as you'd all love to say you woke up like this:

The reality looks a lot more like this:

Whether you're a morning person or not, looking perked up and pulled together isn't always an easy task in the AM. Or is it?

With a splash of water to your face, a flip of your hair and a brightly colored blouse you'll be ready to take on the world.

We've curated a list of go-to hacks -- no makeup required -- that will get you out the door feeling flawless, or pretty damn close to it.

1. Splash ice water on your face.
It's the oldest trick in the book, and it works. Fill your sink with the coldest water possible, add a few ice cubes to get the temperature down even more, and splash the water on your face. It instantly tightens pores and shrinks little capillaries, making your skin appear more even. Plus, it makes you feel more awake, which will definitely affect the way you look.

2. Hit the gym.

Nothing will make you look and feel more awake than exercise. Go for a quick walk, hop on the elliptical machine, or do a few rounds of Sun Salutations. Any exercise that gets your heart rate up is great. When your blood is pumping and your endorphin levels increase, you'll have more energy. Plus, it adds some color to your cheeks—no blush required.

3. Head to your kitchen.

If bags under your eyes are a problem, take a trip to your kitchen. Put two spoons in the freezer for 10 minutes, and then apply one to each eye while you recline on the couch. The cold helps calm inflammation. Cold cucumber slices work in a similar way. Relax with a slice on each eye for five to 10 minutes to relieve irritation, redness, and puffiness.

4. Flip upside down.
For a 10-second hair fix, bend at the waist and flip your hair upside down. Use your fingertips to scrunch your strands at the roots, reviving your texture and volume. This trick has the added bonus of rushing some blood to your face, making your cheeks look pink and vibrant.

5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Dehydration is one of the worst offenders when it comes to looking tired. Skin looks gray or sallow and wrinkles become more prominent when you haven't had enough water. To plump up your cells, simply increase your water intake. Aim for eight glasses per day.

6. Wear color.
Black may be slimming, but it doesn't help you look more awake. On days you're tired, skip the black top and wear your favorite skin tone-flattering color. It will instantly make your face appear brighter and less tired.
