Julia spent 15 years in the corporate sector and not for profit sectors, then volunteered in Cambodia and in Ethiopia. It was in Ethiopia that she came across female genital cutting (FGC) firsthand and wanted to understand more. In 2010, she won a competition through YouTube to take an urgent cause to Davos and was part of a panel dedicated to discussing how to end FGC, with Nick Kristof. She has set up the Orchid Project, to work with communities that practice FGC to end it by 2025, within the next generation.

She is currently in Senegal and the Gambia, visiting communities and seeing how successful programmes work with communities and have achieved incredible change at the grassroots levels, through empowerment programmes.
