New Year, New Direction: Exploring the Power of One

Posted: 01/01/11 12:35 PM ET

My third year of writing this weekly column begins today. And, just like the people in my upcoming book ("RIPE: Rich, Rewarding Work After 50 -- Your Guide to the Next, Best Phase of Your Career"), I'm constantly on the lookout for ways to keep my work fresh, to challenge myself and keep it interesting for you.

I'd been thinking about developing a theme that would allow me to continue to share stories of extraordinary men and women (including New Radicals and ripe pioneers). But I also wanted to broaden my focus.

As I sat down to write, I noticed today's date: 1/1/11. And that cinched it. This year, I'm going to write about the number one.

Yes, stories of singular human beings, as always, but also exceptional ideas, firsts and decisive moments.

We'll think together about "one" and what it means. Our obsession with it ("I'm number one!"). How we use it to change behaviour ("Buy one, get one free!"). And to expand the possibilities ("One small step...").

This column is a creative journey that will evolve as the year progresses. And a collaborative one -- I know you won't simply consume this weekly post, but continue to share it, and be part of it. Above all, my writing will remain what readers like you tell me it is -- a source of encouragement, of inspiration and of hope. That's right in line, by the way, with what Arianna Huffington is doing with this online newspaper of ours (for more on whither HuffPost, please read this terrific interview with Arianna from the Financial Times of London).

I secretly hope that, at the end of each week's read, you'll slap your knee and say, "Good one, Julia!".

Good One Julia!
Yes!
I love the new theme and direction! This is a great year to focus on "Number 1" both internally as well as being inspired by others who have listened deeply to the Call.
This also marks my 3rd year writing- we began about the same time!
You have been on my mind and I will be in touch today!

Happy abundant new year to you Kari!

I agree with us ALL - not only are we many in this regard but together we create the One.

It feels as if a grand design is coming into play this year, and I eagerly look forward to the messages in the words and in the silence behind and in between the words of my favourite blogsters, your good self included of course!

I did so slap my knee and say, "Good one, Julia!" after I read your blog today! As I waited for HuffPo and your blog to download I was thinking about all the "ones" in today's date, and my word what perfect synchronicity that you wrote about it. LOVE it.
I've only followed you on your HuffPo blog for a year (congratulations on your 3rd) but I must thank you for inspiring me every week. I'm so looking forward to your new journey of "ones".

My one is the first anniversary of my blog.

Dear Julia,

Remember that song, "One Is The Loniest Number?" Is that true or is that not one of the cheesiest songs of all time?

Go easy on me its the first thing that came to mind.

Great theme and thanks for your thoughts and bloggings!

Aha! That's a good one -- I'll write about that for sure (and we'll see how many people agree with it!).

Glad you like the theme -- and do decode your handle for us one day...

Loneliest is what I meant of course. Now Tapeats? My spiritual home on earth is in the Grand Canyon. Was lucky enough to have worked at the bottom at Phantom Ranch for a year in my youth.

Tapeats Sandstone is my favorite rock layer there! I'm going to visit my tapeats in a couple weeks!

Love your blogs and your New Radical book. Stay with us here at the Huff!

Peace on ya!
