I'm surprised people haven't mentioned gas prices in all these posts. It's clear that American voters are best mobilized by pocketbook issues, and there's a reason why Senate Democrats held a press conference this week by a Capitol Hill gas station. Of course, I was pleased to see my colleague Dana Milbank write that nearly every Democrat called on aides to drive him or her to the gas station in a low-fuel-economy car. (Many lawmakers feel under pressure to buy American.) I have walked that route many times and I can assure you, it takes less than five minutes to walk by foot from the Senate office buildings to the gas stations those politicians used as a background for their photo-op.
