Another really powerful piece. Thank you for putting things in perspective. Americans kill each other with guns to a tune of about 15,000 per year. Guns were made to do one thing and that is to kill.

Regarding guns and kids: When I was in 4th grade in NC, 2 classmates skipped school, went home, and got rifles to go hunting. Their parents worked so there was no one there. They fooled around all afternoon but at one point, Mitchell jokingly pointed his rifle at his best friend, and Carl panicked, shot, and killed him instantly. I remember Carl stumbling back into class covered with blood and hay (he hid Mitchell in a neighbor's barn) in total shock. He was put in foster care and we never saw him again. I've often wondered what became of this sad little boy with such a heavy burden to bear for the rest of his life. Guns in homes are a danger no matter how well you hide them. Thank you for making that point so beautifully.

You just knew it was going to end bad; strong message about safety and the unpredictability of a child's curiosity.
