Four months ago, in response to the Time magazine cover with the mom breastfeeding her four year old, I wrote an article for HuffPost entitled "Why You Are a Bad Parent." In it I criticized the media for their all or nothing approach to parenting trends. Attachment parenting...

A few weeks ago, comedian Daniel Tosh improvised a rape joke to shut down a female heckler at a Los Angeles comedy club. The Internet responded with a flurry of blog pieces, posts, and tweets, some in support of Tosh, some not. I got a few emails and phone calls...

When I was in my twenties, my good friend Frances was convinced she had hypoglycemia. She was never diagnosed by a medical professional. Nor was she even tested by one. She was a 19th century English lit major with no scientific background. Her dad was a corporate attorney and her...

I won't let my kids eat at McDonald's, at least not until they see Supersize Me. I have no idea if this edict will backfire when they hit their teens and have a little pocket money and a sense of direction. They may end up Big Mac Addicts. Admittedly,...

Why You Are A Bad Parent

I have friends who were born to mother. A friend of mine (full disclosure, she's a nurse) popped out her baby without an epidural and gave him a bath in her hospital room within hours of his birth. All this after delightfully feeding her competently-latching little charge with her abundance...

Brangelina, Bennifer, Bennifer II, Speidi, TomKat. Bring them on... In the age of 140 characters or less, these nicknames are a blessing. Let's face it, saying "and" can be a nuisance and the "'n'" thing seems too hokey. Blended names are fun fun fun. I would like to pitch some...

One Flabby Duckling

To say I wasn't a sportsy kid is like saying Rush Limbaugh hasn't joined the National Organization for Women.

I dreaded physical activity. I was terrible in gym. I couldn't run fast, I had no coordination, strength or flexibility. I went to a school where they forced you to...

I love my friends. I love the ones I talk to every day. I love the ones I talk to once a year. I even love the ones that I kind of can't stand every now and then. I consider myself a good friend. There, I said it. A brag....

A Happy (Sort of) Bully Tale

(9) Comments | Posted April 11, 2012 | 12:16 PM

I had my first bully experience when I was 8 years old. I was at sleep-away camp and very excited to be there. I had pictured an eight-week slumber party.

I met Karen Cunningham the second day. It was early morning and we were standing in a pile of pine...
