(1) Comments | Posted April 19, 2016 | 10:01 PM

Is It Possible To Outrun Your Own Fart?

(0) Comments | Posted April 14, 2016 | 10:30 AM

We've learned about the speed of sound and the speed of light, but what about the speed of smell? More specifically, is it possible to outrun a smell?

In the video above, the brilliant folks of AsapScience look into this important matter, calculating whether or not it's possible to crop dust a room without getting a whiff of your own poison.

Smells travel through diffusion, a process in which particles move from an area of high concentration to low concentration, until reaching a state of equilibrium. But every fart is unique, based on its composition (what food you eat), your gut bacteria and the kind of air you take in. "Farts are like snowflakes, each with its own variants," AsapScience explains. Beautiful, no?

As the video explains, figuring out whether you can outrun a fart requires several calculations based on these unique characteristics and the environment in which you're standing. Whether you can outrun your own toot or not is mostly out of your control, though you may be able to influence the speed at which it travels by the foods you...

This Simple Yoga Sequence Helps Relieve The Pain From Sitting All Day

(0) Comments | Posted April 12, 2016 | 4:45 PM

If you sit at a desk for the majority of your working hours, chances are you experience upper body pain, whether you're fully aware of it or not. Since the average American worker sits for an estimated 13 hours each day (!), it makes sense that a lot of us feel this physical tension.

While you may feel unable to escape your desk chair as often as you'd like, the good news is that there's a yoga sequence that can help undo the damages of a long day on the job. As you'll see in Udaya's video above, instructor Caley Alyssa demonstrates a simple sequence in which the upper body is addressed. Positions like Eagle and and several light yoga stretches can help provide your limbs with more range of motion and relieve stress, to boot.

Check out the moves above, and try them out for yourself when you get home from work. In just five minutes, you'll feel much more at ease.

Science Explains Why You Feel So Bad After A Breakup

(0) Comments | Posted April 11, 2016 | 2:31 PM

Breaking up is hard to do. Whether you're doing the dumping or getting dumped, chances are you feel pretty upset. And there's a scientific explanation for this, as the Bustle video above details. During a breakup, your brain gently reminds you of your love.

Neuroscientist Dr. Lucy Brown told Bustle about her famed 2010 experiment, in which her team looked at the brains of the recently jilted with the help of an MRI machine. Participants were shown photos of both a platonic pal and a recent ex, and the brains' responses to each photo were then compared.

Brown found that a photo of an ex activated the same brain regions that are stimulated when someone's going through cocaine withdrawal. In other words, she concluded, love is a drug and it's really hard to quit. When a relationship is over, there's still a part of the brain that keeps love alive.

"When we look at the picture of the person [we broke up with], there's pain, but the main thing is you're still in love with them. That's really at a non-verbal level of the brain," said Brown.

This can be helpful to know: When you're feeling awful post-breakup, you're not being "crazy," you're simply being human. Learn more about it in Bustle's video. Understanding why you feel so bad might help make it...

NSFW Meditation Will Make You Feel Calm AF

(0) Comments | Posted April 11, 2016 | 8:25 AM

Meditation is for everyone. The act of focusing on the present moment and one's real-time thoughts has been shown to relieve stress, improve focus and regulate mood disorders.

There's certainly no one "right" way to meditate, and for writer Jason Headley and his enthusiasts, the path to zen involves a guided meditation, the visual of a serene beach -- and the vocabulary of a proverbial sailor (note that his quotes below are uncensored).

As you can witness in the short meditation video above (headphones recommended), Headley's honest meditation, aptly titled, "F*ck That," features his soothing voice, some beautiful waves and a string of phrases that'll make you first giggle and then nod in peaceful agreement.

"If you find your mind wandering to other thoughts, don't let it concern you. Just acknowledge that all that shit is fucking bullshit," Headley instructs in a calm voice. The first few times he unleashes those powerful expletives, you may reel back from the meditation with amusement. But, depending on the kind of person you are, once you get used to the meditation's slew of curse words, they become a comfort.

If you find "F*ck That" is a mediation that works for you, you'll be pleased to know there's a book and mobile app version available, so you can get your serving of mindfulness "with a pinch of salty language" whenever you may need...
