慢性的なストレスは、脳卒中心臓発作のリスクの増加に関連があるとされますし、ニキビや肥満、うつ病をはじめとする数多くの健康問題を増大させる可能性があります。

ハフィントン・ポストのブロガーで『Mastering Communication at Work: How to Lead, Manage, and Influence』(職場でのコミュニケーションをマスターする:リードし、管理し、影響を与える方法)という著書もあるジョン・ウォートマンは、「問題は、本当に忙しい日々の途中で、一息入れようとしないことです」と述べています。「日々のストレスを退ける余裕を、定期的に作る必要があります」

けれども、仕事に追われ、ToDoリストの項目もエンドレスにあるようなときは、休憩をとるということ自体を忘れてしまいがちです。ですから、最初から休憩を、1日のスケジュールの中に組み込んでしまいましょう。「机から離れられないのなら、会議やタスクの合間に、5分から15分ずつの休憩を、少なくとも1日に3回は組み込むべきです」とウォートマン氏は述べます。1日3回、30分ずつ休憩をとって心をクリアにするのが理想的ですが、わずか5分ずつでも違いは出るそうです。

この「小さな休憩」をどう過ごすかは、その人の好みでいいのです。ソーシャルメディアサイトを覗きに行ってみたり、ちょっとだけうたたねしたりする人もいるでしょう。お気に入りのメディテーションや呼吸法で元気を取り戻す人もいるでしょう。

けれども、時には仕事がうまくいかなかったりして、予測もつかなかったストレスに見舞われることもあります。ウォートマン氏によると、こうした突然のストレスを感じたときには、「一歩退く」、つまり、20秒間休むだけで、小脳扁桃で起きているストレス反応を抑えるのに十分だそうです。

「ポイントは、自分が感じている緊張状態やプレッシャー、不安などから一歩退くことです。そして、自分の人生で何を行い、この瞬間に何を感じ、どう過ごすかを、自分自身でコントロールできることを思い出すことです」。

ストレスを自分でコントロールできることを思い出すための、「一歩退く」ためのテクニックを、いくつか紹介しましょう。

  • 聞く:自分のまわりの音に耳を澄ませましょう。同僚のキー入力の音や、自分の呼吸などでいいのです。
  • 見る:家族やペット、休暇を過ごすお気に入りの場所などの写真を眺めてみましょう。
  • 数える:ウォートマン氏は、第3代米国大統領のトーマス・ジェファーソンによる、とてもうなずける言葉を引用します。「腹が立ったら、10まで数えてから話しなさい。非常に腹が立った時は100まで数えなさい」
  • 消す:心の中で黒板を消す練習をしてみましょう。意識的に立ち止まり、圧倒されそうに感じる問題を、黒板消しで消すところをイメージするのです。
