Kathie Kane-Willis is a researcher and educator at Roosevelt
University in Chicago. She has been in recovery for heroin addiction
for nearly 20 years. Currently, she heads the Roosevelt University’s
Institute for Metropolitan Affairs and is the director of the Illinois
Consortium on Drug Policy, which she co-founded in 2005. Her research
focuses on drug policy, drug misuse, drug education curriculum
development, and female drug users. Recent reports include the
Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy’s New Directions in "Illinois Drug
Policy: An Update on Incarceration for Drug Offenses in Illinois,"
"Intersecting Voices: Impacts of Illinois’ Drug Policies," and "Through a
Different Lens: Shifting the Focus on Illinois Drug Policy."

Kane-Willis has appeared on television and radio discussing drug use,
trends and policies both locally and nationally.

There are many reasons why I believe that treatment is better than prison for those who use drugs. Research demonstrates that people who receive treatment are far less likely to commit crimes than people who don't receive it.
