Income inequality is about to get worse, according to David Segal's article in Sunday's New York Times. Those of us not in the beneficiary column, the article suggests, had better start thinking of which "artisanal services" we can provide. In short, we need to identify what the rich need and start making those widgets tout de suite.

Paraphrasing Professor Caplin of NYU, Segal wrote:

"While it's noble to focus on how to spread wealth around, it might be wiser to think of ways the poor and middle class could cater to the economy's biggest winners."

The Republican Party has staked out a position where anything to the left of extreme selfishness is on the slippery slope to socialism. But it hasn't occurred to Democrats to counter with the more real scenario of creeping aristocracy.

And what do we hear from the White House? Talk about compromise, common ground and caution.

The administration keeps saying that the American people want a meeting of the minds -- they want the parties to work together. Do they really think that means at any cost?

Americans want Social Security to be there when they need it. They want their homes and their jobs back. They don't want their kids fighting on foreign soil so they can cater to the "biggest winners" when they get home. And, yes, they don't want more money going to fat cats in gigantic financial swindles while their own and their children's opportunities are taken away.

If we don't keep sending that message to Washington, then we will become a country of winners and losers, aristocrats and serfs.

I don't know about wanting to cater to these looting rich thugs, which they schemed and wanted, to satisfy their contempt for other people. It seems likely that these heartless and evil elites took pleasure in demoting and degrading us little people(both livelihood and dignity) so they can look even bigger and more aristocratic. Maybe we stop worshipping money too much(blind money whorshipping); thus these looting rich thugs. Character, virtue, nobility, compassion, consideration, etc. are qualities to uphold, venerate, and worship in people in general, Not in money, people with lots of money. In fact, these rich looters should be shunned, and not catered to. Let them work the lawns, do laundry, cultivate food, raise chickens, do the everyday mundane things for a change(or rather forced change) for themselves, or they choose to starve themselves and/or eat their looted paper money. In other words, it's a retribution for evil people: Boycotting and Fighting Back instead of Catering and Fawning to them ... !

The reality is that if Congressional Dems come out for us peons, they then, won't get all that money and easy living they have had for the last 20 years. The pay out for betraying "the people" is great.

Professor Reardon is spot on with excellent, forward-seeing advice. It's endlessly amazing how so many numbers of our rank and file citizens continue to vote for that which is demonstrably leading to the end of American democracy, and perhaps a modern version of the serfdom recorded for the history of the Dark Ages (aka "Middle Ages", for ref: roughly 600-1100 CE; feudalism, the dominant form of culture in the European area, during the time before human culture had yet developed any democratic or corporate business structures beyond what had been only nascently developed by the Greeks and the Romans; note the Roman Empire was all done prior to 600 CE, after about a millennium of super-power dominance.) Do we really want to dial back human civilization back that far? People who want to "dial back" government really need to read some history.

Why are people so stymied by the concept of the emotional voter? "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!" is what gets them out the door to vote and Rove and Fox have mastered that though they couldn't save the 2008 election due to Bush's trashing of the economy. These people aren't going to sit down and read a history book. When Democrats start with the same alarmist tone, "The economy's crashing from excessive defense spending and corporate offshoring! We're all gonna die!", then the emotional voter is likely to panic and come out to vote ... Democrat. But Democrats are not likely to do something so blunt and manipulative. And so we lose.

This American does not want a meeting of the minds. You can not reason with the mind of mad man. There is no compromising with the GOP. Obama needs to wake up to this reality.

Really?
Since you obviously don't have the time to proof read your own posts I would suspect you'd never take a moment to look up the definition of "Aristocracy".
Def. of Aristocracy: government by the best individuals or by a small privileged class
The Republicans voted today against 'tax cuts' for the 'largest class' with the 'least' amount of money, jobs and privilege because they are fighting for $700 Billion Dollars in tax cuts for the 'smallest and most privileged class' of individuals in this country.
Nay, they voted against 'tax cuts' for ALL AMERICAN's up to the first $250k of income because they are seeking an additional $700B in tax cuts for those that make MORE than $250k.
Your priorities, like that of the Republican party, needs an adjustment.

Your statement is out of bounds relative to any intelligent, informed response. You demonstrate yourself to be precisely the sort of ignorant voter cultivated by the conservative, regressive, corporatist aristocracy. You'll find it on your right, not your left.

Its not about the rise of aristocracy, as free market economics has always been about the maintenance of the position of elites, the biggest threat towards US democracy is the fascist state formed by the dominance of Wall Street and the Pentagon. I just hope its not too late for America, but I suspect it already is.

President Dwight Eisenhower warned American voters 55 years ago about the military-industrial complex, but people are too self-absorbed to take notice. Now that complex is in control and conservatives want to make sure that control is permanent. They will not compromise or cooperate with anybody and have stated so repeatedly. If the price of freedom is eternal vigilance, as Jefferson said, then America is asleep. The last ten years we have been witness to the sharp decline of American influence in the world and the rise of a new puritanism in the US. It bodes ill for future of the country when moneyed interests are the primary ones considered.

I think that they're actually too busy working and raising families and there's not a lot in the papers about bills being passed by the legislature on defense spending (or anything else). Occasionally there's a blurb here and there about a program that's become a fiscal disaster but not a whole lot. Last time I saw something it a local paper, it was about one of the owners of Ben & Jerry's protesting how much was being spent on a particular plane.

My Gawd People!
The problem is the excesses of our relatively unbridled corporate capitalist system. But should you dare to bring that fact to attention only invites people on the right to label you as a Socialist or (heaven forbid!) a Communist.

But can we have an adult conversation on the topic? Only in your dreams...

Oh yes, the Democrats know better than to piss off the same Aristocracy - actually more of a Plutocracy now - that keep the Republicans in line. Why? Because the Dems are just as beholden and enslaved to their well-heeled masters as the opposition. Don't think for one minute that the Democratic Party has YOUR best interests at heart any more than the GOP does. Both parties put on a good show for their planks and agendas, but the bottom line is the Corporate Plutocracy can hold Congress hostage any time they want and nothing can be done about it. Money is power, and in the USA, with its unfettered capitalism, more money equals absolute power.

I'm tired of the whining. How many hours did you spend working for your candidates before the last few elections? Voting is no longer enough. Witness the speedy ascendance of the tea party. They dont wait for a vote, they demand control now, by any means possible. They dont worry about ethics. What are you doing in the meantime? Complaining that the Democrats are spineless? Where is your spine, RK?

Income inequality is stocked by growing endless handouts to paupers and their professorial tutors. Stop making Socialism and people wealth will level up. The real disaster is that this country is getting more poor and less capable to compete with big sharks, like China, India, Brazil. Well, supposedly egalitarian and democratic Left is obsessed with keeping the boot on the throat of capitalism: industry, education, production, equality, freedom. They create monsters and cry at the sight of them.

...And how do you explain the massive growth (tongue in cheek) we experienced during the previous administration WITH the Bush Tax Cuts? Wealth used to trade paper on Wall St. does not line the pockets of those at the bottom. Rather it's those individuals that risk their wealth to create something meaningful that creates jobs based on a business model that supports Americans and not based on taking advantage of low income workers in other countries than our own.
When Bush took office we had a $230B surplus and the Clinton administration had paid down a record $223B in our National Debt. So outside of the false wars perpetrated by the Bush Administration, what happened to the surplus? You could argue that it subsidized the Bush Tax Cuts that were never paid for. Can you say "redistribution of wealth"... UP.
Trickle down economics is a fallacy. George H. W. Bush had it right the first time... Voodoo Economics. Businesses are not going to hire anyone if they will not be able to make X dollars above an beyond what they will pay that person. They won't invest in developing new products or produce more products to purchase because there's no DEMAND. There's no demand because there's no money in the pockets of those who actually spend it in the economy and not in the revolving door known as Wall St.

Absolutely correct riveran21. Unfortunately, there are lazy people who won't investigate American history in order to understand what true capitalism is. They've been brainwashed into believing that anyone who makes computerized money deserves to keep it ('cause Faux News sez so, I presume) regardless of how dirty the money or how devious the methods. We have a buttload of examples of true capitalism in our recent political and economic history to show how it really works; however, they aren't seeing how the middle class grew and unemployment and cost of living stayed low from post-war (WWII) until the late 60s (when Vietnam started to suck us dry) and into the 70s (when our then-President had the foresight to realize that our economic happiness would blow up if we didn't get off the oil-teat).

Say us boomers are spoiled, but it was great to see Dad spend long years at the same job, retiring with a good pension, which was protected by unions, and bought us our middle class ways. If I remember correctly, the business owners were still able to live in their gated communties and mingle with their other capitalist buddies, own yachts and travel extensively throughout the world to make deals and enjoy foreign cultures.

So, what would be wrong with living in a win-win economic situation again? If working and middle class people have money, they spend it and the rich pocket a sizable amount of cash.

If the American citizens don't wake up soon, they will wake up virtual slaves to the rich. That may work for a generation but after awhile the rich won't be able to afford enough army to keep millions of disenfranchised Americans from surging over the walls of their compounds and taking back their country.

There is a big lie on the right that the Dems want to take our guns. The GOP are crafty to use this as a campaign tool but once they have succeeded in handing our nation over to the rich it will be the GOP puppets in power who surge to disarm us so we can't take back what has been stolen.

Think about it...GOP is already talking about a border fence. That works two ways...it can also lock us in. They are talking about changing the constitution they claim they love, to suit their ideology. But once they have control of government they can also eliminate the first and second amendment and as many others as may stand in the way of the wealthy's stranglehold over America.

With billions in China and India they don't need us to consume anymore. They just need us to provide those services they want to extend their luxury...and we will take what ever they feel like offering so we can feed ourselves. Forget about the American Dream...the GOP is bringing a new dream back to this continent...slavery.

Good post, but I beg to point out that our constitutional liberties have been changed as we've slept. Freedom of the press tends to be chipping away awfully quickly. Add that to the head of the FCC kowtowing to the right, against net neutrality; this will pretty much sew up the peoples' right to a free press. Given the few newspaper organizations that haven't been shut down, the ones with former reputations of true investigative reporting being watered down to suit the dumbed-down masses, TV news being celebrity gossip and hateful vitriol, all we can lose now is our ability to investigate and communicate on-line and the deal will be sealed. We will have completely lost our voice and the Empire will have complete control. What better way to calm the masses than to give them this intellectual lobotomy.
