Stop Judging and Read

I'm certainly no stranger to controversy.

I'm the spokeswoman for a lovely company called ToeSox, where I model yoga postures in their socks. Yup, you heard me. Just in their socks.

Needless to say, modeling in the nude is a surefire way to shake people up. Our intention was to inspire and show the beauty of a body that practices regular yoga to get people back on their mats. I can happily say it was highly successful in that realm. I receive regular thank yous and have even signed pictures of my bare buns at workshops. But as life goes, there are two sides to the coin and many people were displeased. They were offensive. They objectified women. They were using sex to sell product. This list went on but I remained calm in the center of the storm because I believed in my choice. My intention was to inspire and empower and I knew that desired effect had taken place. I also knew if you stick your head above a crowd, someone's bound to throw a tomato at it.

Point being, I couldn't help but feel empathy when another controversy surfaced recently in the yoga world. Equinox posted a short video of the lovely Briohny Kate-Smyth (a past student of mine) practicing awe-inducing asana in her lingerie. About 500,000 hits a few days later, Briohny had gone viral and was receiving a plethora of love and hate notes. I reached out to her knowing this experience must be difficult. She opened up to me about her past, her struggle with an eating disorder, and how her practice, daughter and love for her fiancé brought her to peace with her body. It's a gentle reminder that we are quick to judge when we have no idea where someone else is coming from. People often overcome mountains of adversary to be in a place where they can shine. I'm hoping this look into Briohny's life will help us all remember to look for the beauty where we're so quick to see fault. To be inspired where we want to compare, to love where we want to forget and to feel empowered where we want to shy away.

A Talk with Briohny Kate-Smyth

K: You were a child pop star in Asia with a platinum album by the age of 13. How did this experience affect your body image?

B: Because I was so young, I didn't have the tools to navigate the press and attention that came with this stardom. One thing that really stuck with me was how people made fun of my weight. You see, I'm 50 percent Thai, 50 percent Australian and apparently my Australian roots gave me "big bones." Now that I look back, I see how ridiculous this all was but at the time, it affected me tremendously. Thai women are very petite. From the age of 13, I had everyone from my record label to my make up artist suggesting various ways to lose weight which at the time was "baby fat." I did acupuncture on my thighs and cheeks because they were too chubby. I took diet pills that turned out to contain traces of speed, I even had people suggest that I go to China to get knee surgery that supposedly adds inches to your height! All before I turned 14. My spirit, heart, soul and mind were in such a bad place. No matter what anyone said, I always felt fat and inferior.

K: How did you escape this negative cycle with your body image? You mentioned yoga was a key tool to finding an outlet to this pain?

B: Despite my efforts to recover on my own, my eating disorder continued and I was hospitalized for an ulcer at 17 and put on bed rest. I started to treat the disorder as a way of life. I finally found help within 12-step programs and began to attend AA meetings along with practicing yoga. When I identified with the fact that I had a disease, my mindset started to change. I slowly began to build new values within my belief system. I surrounded myself with supportive people who shared similar experiences. Day by day, minute by minute, I fed my mind with affirmations and started to heal.

During my pregnancy in 2004, I cleansed my body of all of my old habits. It didn't feel right to treat my body badly when it would affect my daughter. I always tell students that my daughter changed my life but it feels more like she saved it. She is seven now and continues to teach me something new about myself every day. We practice yoga together almost every day. I thank all divine powers for such a wonderful gift.

K: What was your experience like shooting the Equinox video? What was your intention?

They gave me full artistic freedom and allowed me to express "My Yoga." We all agreed that minimal clothing was the best way to show the lines of the body. I felt very comfortable with that since most of my female teachers have been photographed in the nude by Jasper Johal. Equinox explained that the concept would showcase the home practice of Woman of our generation set inn NYC. I loved it!

Once on set, I put my outfit on and had a brief moment of panic... a relapse of old thinking. But when I revealed that to my fiancé he told me, "You look beautiful." And that stopped the chatter in my mind.

No one expected or hoped for controversy but I understand and respect all views.   This situation reminds me of an exercise my sponsor gave me during my recovery in OA. I made a list consisting of the names of those who I felt hurt me. I read the list to my sponsor, and to my surprise she tells me to think of ways to practice compassion for the people on this list. This exercise helped me learn that the way we react to something is a reflection of the way we feel inside. It helped me look within for the answers to my eating disorder issues rather than blame others for my pain. 

It felt incredibly liberating to be confident in my own skin. So, thank you to Equinox, Q Blog, and to everyone who was inspired by the video.

I came to this article after spending a month writing blog posts and NEVER pressing the "Publish" button because I was afraid to share what I was writing with my yoga community. When I read the line "I also knew if you stick your head above a crowd, someone's bound to throw a tomato at it." followed by the willingness of the same woman who wrote those words to show up nude in front of her entire community and beyond, combined with the beautiful healing story of Briohny Kate-Smyth revealed in this interview...I kept writing. And today I pressed publish on the first three entries. Thanks to this article, to Briohny and Kathryn whom I've never met, I am now waiting patiently to be smacked in the head with a tomato. And even somewhat looking forward to the experience of it!

I thought the video was tastefully done and highlights her physical strength.
I was mainly focused on the incredible distance between each of her toes!

I love yoga! But it's grace and beauty are an inside job - totally.

I'm also glad that a former child star found another way back into the media limelight. When the craving starts so early, it usually becomes lifelong self-obsession.

It's sad that society is so quick to see the negative and doubt before acknowledging the beauty right in front of them. I fail to see how people can watch this video and just get 'that's not yoga' from it. How many people doubting this video, actually practice daily yoga, trying to achieve this level? I'm guessing none of you. People who are serious about yoga would know there's many different varieties of yoga. They would also know that certain forms of yoga and certain practices can get you to this level. As I've said below, unless you know in depth and try to achieve this level yoga, how can you judge something you know little about?

I have experienced amazing progression from yoga (beginner yoga to advanced power yoga) in 8 months time. One would hope that if I kept this up for 15 years, like Briony has, I would also have her strength!

At the end of the day, the negativity just makes you look bitter. Women should embrace the beauty in each other - not put them down for having it...

This is like one yoga fascist-aesthete extolling the virtues of another! Lovely.

The longer this entire yoga fashion-beauty offensive has gone on, the more I am reminded of Susan Sontag's brilliant essay, "Fascinating Fascism," in which she she "deconstructs" the fascist aesthetic of the great Nazi filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, who used her filming of the 1936 Olympics to
create a cult of the body and athletic performance -- all in the name of serving the Fuhrer and his goal of promoting the "pure" and "perfect" Aryan race.

Riefenstahl used many of the same techniques - slow-motion, close-ups of specific body parts, no narration, to deepen the sense of fetishization so that body becomes a monumental icon before which we should bow, visually, in awe - just as the Fuhrer expected of his followers.

It really comes as no surprise - to me, at least - that yoga continues to evolve in this direction. it always serves powerful interests - commercial, in this case - to celebrate the body OVER the mind, physical movement over thinking, mindless silence and physical concentration over critical reflection.

Sontag's 1974 essay remains a landmark analysis of how body-fetishism, even when seemingly benign, could conceal a reactionary agenda. She was a brilliant woman, and her work's been forgotten. I highly recommend this piece, but many others she wrote during her brilliant career.

I'd had a term for how they taught at a studio that I'd attended, about 2 years ago--I'd called it "Body Oligopoly" ... teaching HOW the few do yoga, TO the few. (And these were the "great street-fair demonstrators" teaching, so they were no stranger to parlor tricks to pack 'em in the door. Well, after a class, I'd called them on it ... told them what I knew about how bodies (my body, in particular) not like theirs move, told them that I had noticed others (far thinner than I) struggling.

But I like your terminology better: yoga-fascist-aesthete.

I didn't find the video sexist. However, I do think it speaks to the ego more than to the self. More often than not videos like this either make you green with envy or they make you want to do the same poses, neither of which is necessarily a healthy reaction.

I think the point here is surely that regular yoga isn't the only thing you practice to get a body like that - are you trying to convince your audience that the only exercise you do is daily yoga and that you eat an average 2000 calories per day? I am not scoffing at your yoga - I am just questioning what else you do to maintain that body - and what sort of role model you are for young women if you want them to believe that the only thing between them and a body like yours is a daily routine of yoga...

Yup, tell us in detail the length, frequency and severity of cleanses you do, where you source your food, how many hours a day do you do dedicated cardio, approximate macronutrients, detailed micronutrient supplements, and then you could do it. Also, did the parents you chose have a sideline in gymnastics. I understand Tea Partier Victoria Jackson chose her gymnast father ... and the handstands she can do were her stock in trade in her comedy career ...

I've been doing daily yoga for about 8 months & I switched over to power yoga about 2 months ago. I had little upper body strength and barely any core strength when I started and now I can do push up (proper ones) and stomach exercises I've never dreamed of doing. Briony is obviously doing a mixture of power yoga and yoga, which is the same as what I'm doing. Strength like hers doesn't come over night. You need to work on it and train daily. If you dedicate yourself to anything, you can achieve it. There's nothing more motivating than doing a class/routine that you used to struggle with, become easy. If I can go from beginner yoga to advanced power yoga in 8 months time, imagine my strength in 2 years time? Watching this video inspires me, gives me more drive and gives me a goal to aim for.

It seems the negativity about this video, is from those who have no idea about yoga, the different levels and the different varieties. So I find it strange that some can judge something, that they know little about.

Moral of the story - you can achieve this type of strength by doing yoga!

I think this probably the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I didn't see her as anorexic or super skinny. I saw her as strong, energetic and beautiful. Those people complaining, if she were on a runway for the Miss America pagent in her bathing suit, you'd say it was sexy. If she were on a track field in barely nothing-well she's an athlete. The human body is nothing to be ashamed of , we've made it shameful.

To see an anorexic model doing yoga is not a "judgement" it is a cautionary example of the fact that being too skinny, unhealthfully skinny, while doing yoga, is STILL being UNHEALTHFULLY SKINNY. Too many women are KILLING themselves to look this way. Yoga will not prolong their life, but EATING SOMETHING will.

This girl is very flexible and strong... obviously a good gymnast. Most yoga techniques don't require such strength and balance.
