A Tiny Shift Matters--A Lot

Posted: 12/10/2011 10:27 am

Tune in to "Super Soul Sunday" this Sunday, Dec. 11, from 8-11 a.m. ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network to see Kathy explain to Oprah the Eight Pillars of Wellness in her Quantum Wellness plan.

Imagine yourself standing at the edge of a pond. The water is calm, placid and smooth like glass. In your hand, you hold a pebble. You drop the pebble into the water, and from the place where the pebble submerges, ripples ruffle the water's surface. The small waves start at the point of the pebble's entry, and they make their way the entire distance to the banks of the pond, touching the earth in waves.

You are the pond, and every thought, action and feeling is a pebble, influencing your body, relationships, future and present moment. In your existence, there is no insignificant moment. The universe is also that pond, and you are that pebble. Your life, energy and love echo energetically to the very edges of all creation. You have that much power.

To help you understand this critical point, we can look to an interesting discovery made in meteorology called the butterfly effect. In 1961, Edward Norton Lorenz entered a figure for wind velocity into a computer in an attempt to predict weather conditions. Taking a shortcut, he entered 0.506 instead of 0.506127. What he found was astounding: That tiny difference of 0.000127 radically altered the ensuing weather scenario. The concept Lorenz developed around his findings became known as the butterfly effect because a wind velocity difference of 0.000127 seems so totally insignificant--much like the difference in velocity that might be caused by the flapping wings of a butterfly. Lorenz concluded that the slightest and seemingly most insignificant initial condition could drastically modify the weather going forward. That tiny variation could create such a different path or momentum that it might, in fact, initiate a chain of meteorological events--that it could change a sunny day into a tornado. In chaos theory, this is known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. A tiny shift matters that much. The message is that every action, no matter how small, can cause a huge reaction somewhere else or at some future time. Isn't that exciting?

Meditation: The First Pillar of Quantum Wellness

During Oprah's Soul Series, Kathy Freston explains the first of Eight Pillars of Wellness in her Quantum Wellness plan: meditation. Plus, Kathy and Oprah share the mantras they use while meditating.

The more we adjust or shift--even in tiny ways--the more we can look forward to sweeping changes showing up in our lives. We can cut one thing out of our diet, add a minute or two of meditation, or turn our attention, just for a moment, toward kindness, and before we know it, we are different people creating a different world. This far-reaching shift is dependent entirely upon our willingness to consistently move along the wellness continuum, in whatever incremental ways we can.

In the atmosphere, as in life, every small factor is significant and influential. This is why setting your intention and living your life in a way that pulls you toward your ultimate empowerment--in every moment--is so important. You can direct your experience of life in such a profound way. Every conversation you have, every morsel you eat, purchase you make, and on and on, factors into where you will find yourself in a week, a year or a decade.

A friend of mine likes to remind me that even just wearing a button or putting a bumper sticker on your car can change the course of history. That's not just hyperbole. Think about it. Say the button sparks a conversation in the checkout line in the supermarket. The person you chatted with then adopts the change you are promoting. You have just changed every remaining day of that person's life. And if that person decides to make that advocacy issue his life's mission, well then, his excitement will generate yet more new waves in the world (or pond!), and thus the dance of life takes a new twist! All from simply putting a bumper sticker on your car or wearing a button.

Every little thing you do adds up, and before you know it, you've created your life. And how you create your life ripples out and affects everyone and everything that crosses your path, known or unknown to you.

Now imagine that you are in a rowboat, and everything you do is one push of the paddle. Is it a strong row, moving you forward? Or is it sideways or chaotic, leaving you vulnerable to the current? Think of this wellness journey as that rowboat. Once you get the hang of rowing with the current and not against it, in harmony with who you truly are at your highest potential, every move you make will move you forward with greater efficiency. Just follow the rhythm of the current, add to it some of your own muscle, and you'll soon be amazed at how your momentum increases and you start reaching and surpassing your goals.

As you awaken to this power to affect your life, pay close attention to your feelings and observations. Ask yourself: Where am I now, and where do I want to be? Just be aware. The more you become aware of the affects of each choice you make, the more you will be able to choose differently and better for yourself. As you live more creatively, you'll be amazed at how these small moments come together and inform your big breakthroughs.

Action Steps
Close your eyes and meditate for one minute a day. You'll come from a more centered and grounded place in your decisions and actions.
Think about where your food--meat, dairy and eggs, especially--comes from, and eat that food only if it sits right in your soul. You might try going meatless on Mondays!
Learn something new once a month, for instance, CPR!
Eat an apple a day; the fiber will keep you feeling full and clean (if you know what I mean!).
If there is an outstanding grudge with someone, work out some forgiveness. It will free you.

Wow! That's even better than THE POWER OF NOW (TM).

I'm just wondering what the ripple effect is every time Oprah has her personal chef cook up some biscuits and sausage gravy.

I agree with several of the steps she recommends. Learning just one new thing a month is a great one; I am back in college (at age 60) and I marvel at the things I am learning every day. Also, meditation is an absolute necessity for me; it makes going into a classroom full of very young women (I attend a woman's college) less stressful for me, lol.

I love the suggestion of learning something once a month, too! Also thinking about going back to college at age 54! You are an inspiration!

Thanks! I just finished my first semester of my junior year at a school that is known for its rigorous program, so it was a bit of a shock the first few weeks. But I am doing well (looks like straight A's, but we shall see). If I can do this at 60, you can certainly do it at 54. Go for it.

It's pretty clear that Oprah thinks about food a whole lot already.

Kathy says, "Practice, not perfection." Oprah does Meatless Mondays and is vegan-ish. We have to give people credit for small steps-an Oprah's show about going vegan was a pretty huge step!

Looks to me like what Oprah is practicing is a lifetime of yo-yo gaining and losing - possibly the most unhealthy thing she could do. This, despite having nearly infinite resources at her command, including a personal chef, and eating "gurus" like Kathy Freston.

Seems to me like it's time for her to get her stomach stapled and forget about this incremental approach based on Freston's veganism.

This idea was well-explored in Stephen King's "11/22/63." I finished reading it week before last, and I'm still thinking about it.

Great article, thanks!

Just yesterday I got a chance to remind myself how much difference just taking even a minute to set intention and align myself with the result I want can be.

I was stuck having to go to the mall, just to two stores but it's something I dislike at any time of year, and two weekends before Christmas it can be a real nightmare. I also tend to react negatively to salespeople trying to get me to sign up for loyalty cards, extract personal information even when I'm paying cash, etc.

Thankfully, I caught myself in the middle of imagining how horrible it was going to be, and reminded myself of a couple of things. First, that the sales folks probably didn't want to be at the mall any more than I did and, second, as I was getting their early, I really had the power to affect the overall tone both my day and theirs. I set an intention to interact with everyone from a place of connection and compassion, rather than separateness and judgment.

I don't think I thought about it again the whole time I was there, but every interaction was more than pleasant, when I needed help at the first place I went a salesperson appeared immediately, and I was on my way home before I knew it. A great reminder of the power of both intention and expectation.

Very excellent article about the power of interaction and relationships while consciously using ourselves and meditating regularly. Mindfulness for me means that all is meditation when we are aware...being in the experience of life as a partispant making "waves" does influence change...hopefully for the betterment of nature and humanity as One.

The concept of meatless Mondays is based on the incorrect notion that meat is bad for us. We would be far better off having grain-free Mondays if we want to improve our health. A diet that includes many wonderful foods and cuisines in it will always have meals in it that don't revolve around meat, but let's focus on the foods that do the damage to us if we seek greater health....grains, starches and sugars.

It's not that grains themselves are bad for us, but that they are refined.

It's not that meats in themselves are bad for us, but that it's how the animals are raised and what they give them.

But sure, why not have sugar-less Tuesdays(?)

Meat IS bad for us. Pumped with steroids and antibiotics, full of tumors and pus.

Then buy meat that was raised WITHOUT steroids or antibiotics. The tumors and pus rubbish is just propoaganda. COmplete and utter BS.

It's great to hear your explanation of chaos theory. I think I got it for the first time. Some people find it easy to pay attention to details and try to aim for the highest good. Yet for many it can seem
too contrived. I find that practicing a meditation that connects me to the deepest level of transcendence helps develop my inner GPS. After meditation I notice I am spontaneously behaving in a way that is purposeful and healthy, without even thinking about it.

Meditation means to think and the mantras or sayings that kathy and Oprah are using to meditate on are very uplifting. Transcendental Meditation means to transcend, or go beyond the surface level of thinking, until you transcend all thought and experience they state of pure silence. It is a state of natural presence and a level of silence that is so much more deeper than the just being quiet. There is no trying to be present, or trying to go beyond the ego. This very deep state of silence and rest allows stresses to be released, which than allows your heart to naturally open more and more and you to naturally become more peaceful.

There are over 300 peer reviewed study showing the many benefits as a result of regular practice of  Transcendental Meditation.

Good article. I recommend starting with 5 min instead of 1 min of meditation daily.
