R&B: Reunion and Brotherhood

They took the stage at SOB's confident and smooth as though they never parted ways. The crowd of fans, mostly women screaming for them was some indication to me that the group has been missed and people are ready to see and hear more from them.

Have you ever just wanted to hear the smooth sounds of R&B? You know, that good music with a nice melody and a hook that has you singing it over and over again. I don't think I'm alone when I say music like that just doesn't happen much in this day in age when everything you hear more than likely comes as quick as driving around to the next pull up window to get your Happy Meal. Which is why I was happy to when a friend of mine reached out to me and said I should spend a Sunday night listening to some of the great R&B music at "R&B Spotlight" at SOB's in SoHo. It was this past Sunday night, Grammy night to be exact was happening in Hollywood while a reunion of sorts was happen in New York City.

The group is known as Day 26. The all boy band handpicked by Sean "Diddy" Combs on his then 2007-reality television show, Making the Band 4. Robert Curry, Brian Angel, Willie Taylor, Mike McCluney and Que Mosley came out swinging with a successful record and album. These five guys went from virtual unknowns to big time superstars. If you're like me I know that you have heard of the pressure of superstardom and celebrity. Like many groups before them Day 26 had their own challenge on the road to success and when success family came it was tough. The group ended up parting ways and four year later they now want to do something more for the millions of fans they left waiting behind.

They took the stage at SOB's confident and smooth as though they never parted ways. The crowd of fans, mostly women screaming for them was some indication to me that the group has been missed and people are ready to see and hear more from them. They performed songs that shot them to fame like "Imma Put It On Her" and "Since You Been Gone." They were surely back in their element, together, and harmonizing. On the surface you have five individually talented singers but I think each of them deep down know that they are much stronger and a mighty force of nature in the crazy business of music singing together. I had the opportunity to speak with each of the guys and after four years of being a part I think I can say with confidence that the Day 26 you get today in 2014 is a more mature and grown up group. They were actually the first to point that out to me during our interview.

KM: This reunion took a long time but how does it feel being back up there together?

Robert: "It's awesome, it's like we never left. It's something that we all went through with Diddy together and it's something that have bonded us and will keep us bonded forever."

Willie: "We have had our issues you know what I mean, people know that we have had our issues but at the end of the day it's a family. We are cool, we have gone months without speaking to each other but when we come back together is great. We all have grown and learned from the past."

Que: "Chemistry is an amazing thing and I think we have that. You know a lot of groups they can't be away from each other long periods of time and then come back and still feels like where we left off at."

One thing I can say for sure is that they aren't in that space that led to their abrupt split four years ago. The group is ready to bring back the heat to R&B and this spring when on tour they want to continue making music and at some point take their place among some of music royalty. My thought is to be on the look out for the new and improved Day 26. Let the music be your guide and if you want to experience the soulful voices of Robert, Brian, Big Mike, Willie and Que make sure you check them out on tour this spring in a city near you.
