American Idol 2009 -- If I'm Being Honest

Wow! What an upset! Kris Allen won. The All-American fresh-faced boy next door beat a theatrical guy who wore leather and eyeliner. Who knew??? This country is not yet ready to crown a young man who looks like Liza Minnelli their next American Idol. Not that Kris didn't deserve it but clearly Adam was the more interesting, original choice. And I suspect will have the greater career (whatever that means). They could both be stars or in five years one could open for the other at Magic Mountain.

Still, it was Adam who jump-started the series. He's the one everybody was talking about, he's the reason you watched every week. My guess is all those tweenage girls who were so shattered last year when David Archeletta lost vowed they would never let that happen again. Hell hath no fury like a middle schooler with a Twitter account!

Of course the real winner here is American Idol. People will be talking about this for days.

I felt bad for both of them on the final performance night having to sing that insipid song co-written by Kara DioGuardi.

Go farther and deeper and don't give up your dreams, there are no boundaries, climb every mountain, spread your wings, reach for the stars.

Those lyrics might inspire Mike Tyson to bite someone's ear off but otherwise they're nothing but a string of tired clichés. And the person who co-wrote that drivel is telling other people they're not artists?? Mark my words: after this week you'll hear "Letter to my Teenage Son" by Victor Lundberg on the radio before you ever hear "No Boundaries." More on Kara later.

Here are my overall thoughts on this season. And please understand that I'm a fan of the show. At one time I loved it. It was the perfect blend of music, controversy, and stupidity all wrapped into one highly entertaining hour of live cheese. I just think they've gotten off the track.

American Idol has become American Airlines. You get far less for your money and it takes much longer to get to your destination.

In a Fox effort to get as much as they can out of their one cash cow (Sit Down, Shut Up never panned out as the national phenomenon they expected) I'm sure they put pressure on Idol to expand as much as they could. Y'know, a half hour here, fourteen hours there. But with no real new program content what we were left with was cocaine cut so thin it would pass a Major League Baseball drug test.

All of the "improvements" this season were designed to pump more air into the already stretched balloon. Adding a fourth judge. Good God, why? Two of the ones they already had were as useless as highway signs in Braille. Then, to compound matters, they hire a woman so annoying, so whiny that I find myself preferring the sound of a car alarm. And she's still a better judge than songwriter.

Another "improvement" was to expand Hollywood week. They took 300 hours of Hollywood auditions and edited them down to 298 hours of airtime. Topped off by an entire night of kids stepping into an elevator that led to their doom. So much for follow your dreams, reach for the sky, etc. There may be no boundaries for Kris, but for the other 99,999 there definitely are and the sign at the border read KEEP OUT.

Once the live broadcasts began the show started to show some life. We were treated to actual performances. 90 second snippets that passed for songs but still! Of course we were now two months into the season already. (Compare that to 24 where by week eight more people had died than in World War I.)

This is the "psychopaths and opportunists on parade" portion of the festivities. Topping this year's crop of loons was Tatiana Del Toro who was so off-the-charts obnoxious that Kara was tolerable. It's like when your face is on fire you tend to forget that your tooth aches.

Here again, the producers' "improvements" allowed whackjobs like Tatiana to just keep coming back, much like the Terminator or floods. The problem is after eight seasons we've become so conditioned to the freaks and losers that there's nothing surprising or even entertaining about them anymore. So Tatiana on her knees wailing and groveling for one more chance is now as heart wrenching as the TV Guide program crawl.

Finally the Top 13 was selected (in previous years it was the Top 10). This gave producers the opportunity to stretch the show to two hours or more for weeks. Mentors were once again enlisted. Vocal advice from such noted singers as guitarist Slash, film director Quentin Tarentino, and actor (with a movie conveniently just opening) Jaime Foxx. Were fellow crooners Dick Cheney and Roseanne unavailable?

When they finally had to limit the performance shows to an hour it was like squeezing a Minnesota Viking into Nicole Richie's leotards. First the judges had to team up and that was a disaster. Silence Simon so Kara could question everyone's "artistry". The cardinal rule of show business: You never replace Curly with Shemp if Curly is still alive.

Results shows that used to be a half hour swelled to sixty minutes. So there were now 58 minutes of shoe leather rather than 28. The rest of these hours were filled with former American Idols hawking their new singles (a Taylor Hicks pity booking), Ford commercials (they're zany these kids!), recaps of recaps, Up With People production numbers that transformed the tattooed contestants into Osmonds, and plugs for iTunes, tours, video downloads, their website -- pretty much everything short of Paula's jewelry line and bottles of Mighty Mendit.

But unlike past years, the caliber of contestants (once you weeded out "Bikini Girl" and the future Mickey Rourkes) was much higher this season. Adam, Danny, or Allison could have easily beaten the "Soul Patrol", Jordin Sparks, or ",the Velvet Teddy Bear (Ruben Studdard -- see how fast we forget?). All the more reason to be frustrated when performances were truncated so Randy had time to say "mad vocals" fifteen times a show instead of nine.

So congratulations to Kris. And Adam, who will probably get even more notoriety for losing. Most of the others from this year's crop will fade into the mist although Tatiana will surely resurface if they ever do a remake of SYBIL.

There's a rumor that next year Fox plans to expand the show even more. This ranks up there in hubris with ticket prices at the new Yankee Stadium. I hope it's not true and I'll just conclude by reminding you of that one great truism of Broadway.

"Cut out twenty minutes and the show will run for two more years."

Tryouts for next season begin soon. Eagle scouts only need apply. It's been fun reviewing Idol for HuffPost. See you in January.

I agree with you on nearly every point. I would keep Paula for her loopiness, but replace Randy and his vocabulary of 50 words. Something that no one has touched on, to my knowledge, is the unfortunate use of the phrase "I'm going to sing [name of a song] by [name of a singer]. 1. This gives short shrift to the songwriter. "I shall be released" is not by Bette Midler, it's by Bob Dylan. 2. When a contestant uses that phrase, it tells me they are going to be copying someone elses version of the song and not singing their own version.

In my opinion, England's version of this show is more interesting. Susan Boyle would have absolutely no shot at advancing and no prayer of winning American Idol. She doesn't have the attraction factor, for sure - all she has is a beautiful and powerful voice. Boyle couldn't sing some of the songs she would be forced to sing - it would be like your parents singing heavy metal.

I go back to Melinda Doolittle - probably the most tone perfect, versatile, and purest talent on American Idol for a long long time. If she had Beyonce's looks, she would have won.

England's show seems to be geared to finding talent the public favors - and the public there seems to tolerate opera, standards, etc - instead of finding a pre-packaged 'star' that can be marketed by the promoters. It was clear that Adam was the favorite of the judges and management to win - unfortunately, they were thwarted by the votes of the fans.

I'm tired of all the affected "runs' or big notes each and every singer tries to insert into their style or song, instead of the simple singing that can identify the best singer and the best voice. England has it right. American Idol has it wrong.

Britians Got Talent is not the same as AI. AI is about finding the next pop star where BGT is about finding ordinary joe or janes to sing for the queen. It's not about record deals or becoming a pop icon. America's Got Talent is the sister of BGT.

Don't watch AI, but noticed all the hoopla about Kris the winner, so decided to listen to both Adam and Kris on YouTube. I thought Kris did an excellent job (I liked his phrasing), and Adam has a fine voice, too, but the hyped-up performance just turned me off (NOT the fact that he's gay by any means).

Nice article. I agreed with MOST of it, but would like to disagree on Taylor. I liked him and was thrilled when he won. He has talent. Just too bad AI isn't allowing him to express it.

Kara's single was horrid. It was no doubt written for Kris, not Adam. But, even Kris couldn't make it work. Kris was great on quiet acoustic work. But, he needs to be careful about enunciating. He slurs lots of words and basically butchers the songs when he is straining to hit the higher notes.

Adam was the winner. Adam was the better performer. Adam has an incredible once-in-generation voice. I am glad he didn't win so he has more flexibility to pick and chose his future opportunities. Did he get to screaming mode sometimes? Yup, and it was a bit hard to take those few times. But, overall, he was my choice from the first. I was excited every week to watch the show, to see what Adam did.

I was not surprised that Kris won. I was not surprised to hear about this whole Dial-Idol Software thing where there were more votes from AR than people who live in AR. I have yet to be able to get thru on the phone to vote for my favorite, in all the years it's been on.

I agree that there should be a limit of one vote per phone number, and IP address.

Thank you so much for your comments about the judges. I have quit watching AI simply because Randy and Paula are still there, spouting their ridiculous nonsense. AI would be doing their viewers an enormous favor if they would get real judges on the panel alongside Simon.

The same things goes for America's Got Talent. Not only do they have that very annoying David Hasselhoff and irritating Sharon Osborne with her overdone accent, last season they really struck bottom with Jerry Springer. He's just not a realistic host for a talent show. Piers Morgan is great; he comes across as someone who is really trying to do the job he's been hired for instead of mugging for the cameras and audience.

AGT, and AI to an extent, spends way too much time on the judges' interactions with each other, something that I and probably most viewers care nothing about. The show is supposed to be about the talent being showcased, not some has-been judge's scripted conflict with another has-been judge.

Can we not get judges of substance instead of has-beens? I know the show needs to keep their costs down, but really -- judges don't make superstar wages.

I just wish Simon Cowell would read Huffpost. Maybe, since he's involved in producing both shows, he would take notice and make some sorely-needed changes. If changes aren't forthcoming I will continue to be a former viewer of both shows.

Like most everything else FOX taints, AI also now just exploits America's bigotries for rupert bucks.

Good post. I agree that the old format of watching auditions and then performances without the hoopla and 'edgy suspense' (barf) is so much better. And adding the 4th judge was insane. She really doesn't bring all that much extra to the panel.

Boundaries is not a song that I would purchase .....ever. And she wrote it in a key that wasn't good for all contestants. Obviously, expecting Adam to win. Awful song.

Adam is better off not winning as he can start his career w/o so many strings attached to him.....and a great career he will have. I wouldn't mind seeing him as new front man for Queen. Who else can do Mercurial vocals that perfect.

Chris needed the Idol title more than Adam. He will be assured a career now. I feel sorry for his pretty wife who has no idea of what she is facing now.

Simon, Paula, and 'yo dog' should be kept and all the bickering and fun continue.

NO MORE BIKINI Beeahch or Tatty Drama Queens, PLEASE!

I may be wrong but I believe Adam was the victemof his being too much identified with Michael Jackson. Whne i watched him with his dress, make-up and all, I had flash backs of Michael. I don't think America is over the Michael Jackson thing and reacted to secondary charateristics rather than to a good talent. I also like Kris, tho'.

Yep - Lambert came across as "creepy" with good teeth. He did not seem genuine - and all that screaming!

I so agree with the article about the bloated AI format. It's best to DVR the show and fast forward past all the filler. As for Kara, her song for the Idols was trite and insipid in its lyrics; total crap. I did rather enjoy hearing her sing on stage, though. She definitely can sing. I hope AI returns to a three judge panel again next year. By the way, I never vote for any contestant. Who has time to stay on the phone hearing a busy signal for two hours? Good luck to Adam and Kris in their future endeavors.

Take 100 million votes (if you believe that number) and divide by an average of 100 votes per voter (some say they vote up to 200 times) that is 1 million people voting. Somewhere around 30 million people watched the last show so only 1/30th of the viewers actually voted. This is a problem the show needs to correct. Until then Cowell and Seacrest need to stop saying "America Voted."

As a gay man, I hated Adam's theatrical, but not soulful showtunes voice and his tendency to scream, and not cool screaming like Ian Gillan or David Lee Roth or the Ohio Players. I voted for Kris. So gay folks as well as conservatives need to knock off this cultural war b.s.

I am a bit tired of people suggesting that the only reason Adam didn't win is because he is gay !
Adam didn't win because he doesn't appeal to everyone, period !
I like Aerosmith once in awhile but my Areosmith days are long gone and now I prefer a smoother tone to my music instead of all that screaming .
I am sure this is true with a lot of people .
Kris was versatile and smooth and he wasn't screaming at you when he sang . Adam to me was not a versatile singer ,he was more of the hard rock Areosmith (screaming ) / early David Bowie eccentric style . That is okay if that is what you like , but half the country that watch American Idol are more into a versatile singer .

As far as one person one vote goes .I heard Adam complain about that . Yet nobody complained that people from another country were actually finding ways to vote for Adam even though it is American Idol not Austrailian Idol or whatever and their not suppose to take votes from other countries . I read a blog the other day where someone from another country admitted to finding a way so she and her friends could vote for Adam and they voted several times. So I think if Adam has a problem with why Kris won he needs to rethink his reasoning because its a two way street .
Kris was the

"It was the perfect blend of music, controversy, and stupidity all wrapped into one highly entertaining hour of live cheese."

And that is just the problem. American Idol has been more responsible for devaluing musicians than Napster or Kazaa. Like I said in an earlier post, the next Otis Redding isn't going to come out of American Idol because this is a competition between the sonic equivalent of utility infielders. So what you get are hacks like Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, singers who are passable at a bunch of different genres but not anywhere near what you could call great. Plus the format is generally just so douchematic that it is hard for anyone who really does follow music seriously to not shake one's head in disgust at the whole blowsy glorified karaoke night spectacle.

Speaking of musicians, the biggest victim of this has been the only real musician on the judging panel, Randy Jackson )Paul Abdul's career was brought to you by the Eventide Hamronizer folks), who has been reduced to going from being a first call studio musician to a "be the slang slinging black guy." In other words, they have just about turned him into a minstrel show act. But I guess the money is worth the compromising of one's dignity.

American Idol needs to change the voting to one vote per telephone number....When you have a contest were people can vote over and over and over again , well, the wrong person wins...
10:26 AM on 05/24/2009
Couldn't agree more and they need to add one vote per IP address. I might sit down once on the computer and vote during a commercial but I am not spending two hours on the phone trying to call in multiple votes.
