Today Is Not a Dress Rehearsal

Posted: 01/18/09 10:00 PM ET

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, and there is a new voice in Washington... Ours. On Tuesday we will all be given the chance to take the oath.

As we enter this unprecedented inauguration and embark on a new chapter in America's history, there is a reborn sense of what it means to be American; that everyone can make a difference, and that "TODAY IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL."

In November, we received a call to action when President Elect, Barack Obama, said, "So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other."

It is one of those rare moments in history when we are being called upon to serve - a time when we are encouraged to: actually get involved to effect meaningful and sustainable social change; be part of the solution; and not just change our outfit, but also outfit change.

We recently created a T-shirt that is being worn by the volunteers at the pre-inaugural event at the Neuseum on Monday evening. It states "OUR INAUGURATION" with "WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER" shown in a symbolic "O" representing our new President, Mr. O himself, and his message of outreach and inclusion. 100% of the net proceeds from the T-shirt sales will be donated to the AWEARNESS Fund - a non-profit entity that supports, encourages and empowers acts of service, volunteerism and social change. The T-shirt is available now at AWEARNESS.com

It's hard to ignore the current economic climate or the fact that it's not likely to get better any time soon. The worst part of it all is that the sector that's being hit the hardest is the one that can afford it least: the world of the non-profit.

This past November, under the notion that, "NO GOOD DEED SHOULD GO UNPUBLISHED." I launched a new initiative called, AWEARNESS. This expansive campaign aims to encourage, promote and empower any individuals who are inspired by acts of giving back. At AWEARNESS.com anyone can sign up to join the AWEARNESS Alliance, whose purpose is to create a community of dedicated volunteers who strive to make a difference through service and volunteerism.

AWEARNESS.com utilizes social and volunteering networking capabilities so you can enter your zip code and get a list of volunteer opportunities in your community. You can also participate in the AWEARNESS blog, read inspiring stories of those who have volunteered, purchase AWEARNESS products, such as socially-relevant T-Shirts and the AWEARNESS book, "AWEARNESS: Inspiring Stories About How to Make a Difference." Again, 100% of the net proceeds will be donated to the AWEARNESS Fund.

Start off by watching what you buy. No longer purchase things with little useful life. Buy quality items that will last and put and end to the throw away society.

By cutting out wasteful purchses you extend the life of the world natural resources.

Kenneth, thank you for being compassionate, making it a priority for your business to be socially involved and pushing for positive change on many levels (through your products, your advertising and personally advocating for social change)! I was not familiar with www.awearness.com until I read this post (will definitely pass along the message and support it).

To add to your thoughts … as individuals and families become financially strapped, I hope more businesses leaders will make it part of their model to support non-profits and social responsibility. I am the co-founder of www.writehook.com, a company where customers create custom greeting cards online. While developing the business, it was imperative to both me and my business partner that we created a company where we could make a positive impact within our communities, the environment and create a high quality product. That is why we committed to donating five cents of every card sold to specific-non profits, printing all cards on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, and only offering cards that are FSC certified.

Whether a business is a two person outfit or a multinational conglomerate, they have the ability to create a positive difference within their community through fostering a culture of corporate, personal and social responsibility. Hopefully more business leaders will make it part of their mission to support non-profits and more individuals will make conscious decisions to support businesses that make it a priority to be socially and environmentally responsible.

KENNETH COLE, you had me at "Hello."

I fell hard back in New York, twenty some odd years ago during the Reagan administration, when you so bravely embraced that filthy word AIDS, plastered it everywhere for everyday people to see it, right there along side your products, your name and your reputation, and started myriad conversations. Dude, we should all have your balls.

My mother passed away in July. One of her most memorable comments to me was, "This isn't a dress rehearsal, this is the only life we are going to get." It was true 20 years ago and it is true today.

Yesterday is history
Tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a Gift, that's why we call it Present

We must start the change. Everyone deserves a bearable today. Yes we can! We can start caring for others and stop the short sightedness of personal gluttony. People have stopped enjoying what they have. Always wanting more. We must take the time to enjoy the gift we have been given "today".

KC, insightful commentary...working in the commercial banking business revealed certain situations with businesses. Most business are about maintaining profit from the top down and hardly ever focus on volunteering and community-building. It's amazing the lack of programs and service that business shirk or pass on because it just does not add to the bottom line. Aside from the non-profit orgs and churches, It only seems like a few business entrepreneurs and banks (yes, commercial banks) that advocate volunteering in the business sector. There needs to be a shift and focus away from greed (that have been fed to us all our lives like some sort of iv drip) and helping our fellow man. Pure capitalism does not work, take it from me. I'm a banker...and now many people are discovering that. God help us all in the next coming months. Thank you KC for the website. I'm going to look into places in NYC that I can give some of my time.
