An Idea for Barack Obama: Why Not Pick Sen. Dick Lugar as Secretary of State?

Posted: 11/27/2012 9:33 am

So, President Obama, you need a new Secretary of State to replace Hillary Clinton, but you don't like any of the choices sitting on your desk? You think Susan Rice deserves it and would do a great job, but she comes with too much controversy? You feel you owe John Kerry a favor for helping you in the campaign, but wonder if he'd fit right on your team?

How's an idea that maybe you haven't thought of: How about Dick Lugar? You remember Senator Lugar. One of the most respected voices in Washington on foreign affairs, with 43 years experience in the United States Senate, incuding two decades as a top leader of the Foreign Relations Committee, he's the one that was so popular in Indiana, his home state, that voters there relected him by more than a two-thirds margin four out of the last five times he ran -- including a whopping 87 percent in 2006.

Dick Lugar would still be a senator in 2013 except that a Tea Party fanatic named Richard Mourdock, the Indiana state treasurer, beat Lugar for the Republican Senate nomination in 2012, blasting Lugar for being too bipartisan, too open-minded and too reasonable in dealing with people who disagreed with him. Mourdock then showed his true colors during the general election campaign by explaining that women rape victims carrying the rapist's child were simply enjoying a "gift from God." It didn't go over very well.

As a result, starting in January, Dick Lugar doesn't have a job, and he probably would love to work for you.

Pick Lugar as your new Secretary of State and, in one package, you get:

  • Solid experience on the most difficult foreign affairs issues of the day;
  • A voice with instant credibility and gravitas on the world stage;
  • A crystal-clear statement on bipartisanship in Washington;
  • A quick confirmation by Lugar's Senate colleagues; and
  • A very nice person sitting at your cabinet meetings.

Most Democrats (even most Republicans) agree he got a raw deal from the Tea Party in Indiana. And most also agree that Washington doesn't have enough moderate figues left to waste a good one.

Can we really afford to lose someone of the caliber of Dick Lugar to national affairs? President Obama, you can prevent this, and help your own team at the same time. It's just a thought.

(Giving credit where due, I first heard this idea over Thanksgiving from my nephew Jim Hershberg, author of the terrific new book MARIGOLD: The Lost Chance for Peace in Vietnam , recently named by the Washington Post as one of the ten best of 2012. He gave me permission to share it with all of you.)

Lugar would be a perfect choice and it would send quite a message to McCain and his backup singers.

Lugar is an inspired choice only if Rice fails to be confirmed. I would force the showdown and allow the zealot Republicans to be showcased. The incident in Libya was tragic but nothing compared to the misleading statements that lead up to the war in Iraq. The President should not allow himself to be bullied in a fight that is nothing more than political drama and in side the beltway theater. Condi Rice was at best marginally qualified and her appointed approved. If Rice is rejected then comeback with Lugar which protects the existing Democratic Senate seat in Mass.

Lugar would have been spectacular under one of the Bushes but at his age, no way. The demands are just too great. Allow the great former Senator to be an Elder Statesman. We are in dire need of those.

I now believe he will not nominate her. She failed her test today. Negotiating and maneuvering ones opponent is crucial no matter what the setting. She somehow made it worse in that meeting with the senators.

She's has done exemplary work over 20+years including 2 administrations; a Rhodes Scholar, Oxford and Stanford grad (McCain's "she's not bright"?);to mention her last 4 yrs as the UN Ambassador. She has in the past and present "negotiated and maneuvered" her opponents repeatedly. Could it be that McCain and his backup singers, A&L, are obsessed with their real target, Obama, that they don't have ears to hear?They are asking the wrong questions to the wrong person and getting the wrong answers. To repeat something only to get the same answers is the definition of insanity. I am 66 yrs old, so I can say this to McCain: retire to your rocker recliner in one of your numerous homes because the world is passing you by!

I agree with you on your assesment of her credentials and she is most impressive. She has been weakened to the point that you don't want to send her out to deal with the bad actors in the world. they will take advantage of her.

It's sad that Dick Lugar was prevented (by Indiana state law) from running as an independent after losing his primary- also known as "pulling a Lieberman." Had he been victorious, it would have showed moderate Republicans that they need not be afraid of primary challenges from the Tea Party, and sanity would have been restored.

I agree. It would be a good fit. You ought to write the White House and comment.

There are about 50 people who would be better choices than lugar.

The Susan Rice "controversy" is made up from fake rage. She'd be an excellent choice. Senator Lugar is 80 YEARS OLD. That job requires way too much energy and vigor for a man in that stage of his life. Susan Rice is the choice...young and brilliant and experienced.

I like a bill Clinton nomination...

Here's another idea: appoint Bill Clinton as Secretary of State. We need John Kerry to stay in his Senate Seat to foil McCain and Graham's plans for Scott Brown. Susan Rice does a great job at the UN.

Thanks to John McCain, it has to be Susan Rice. The President cannot let the bullies intimidate him. If she is not confirmed, make a recess appointment for the next two years and if necessary, the two years following that. Stick to your guns Mr. President and fight for Susan Rice.

MY POINT, EXACTLY. Enough of nominating Republicans. Nothing will ever change the mood of the current GOP. They were sore before; they are wounded now. They will not care about bipartisanship. We've been there. We've done that. All we got was the perception on the part of the GOP that the president is "weak."

It is not a bad idea as it would keep Kerry with the MA Senate seat, and it would curb the GOP on foreign affairs. That said it would depend on how well Obama and Lugar fit together in a working relationship. Depends also on how much Rice wants the job and Obama wants to give the job to her.

For reasonable people it would put an end to the idea that Obama was not willing to work with both parties, but their are few reasonable in the GOP these days.

That's ridiculous. The GOP kicked its Moderates to the curb so how is picking Lugar a sign of bipartisanship? That would be such a slap in the face of the people that have the credentials and actually campaigned for the President.
04:35 PM on 12/12/2012
The President should only appoint people who campaigned for him? Sounds like cronyism to me.

Hardly.  The GOP got rid of Lugar.  We don't want your sloppy seconds.
