Hillary Can Still Win It

Yes, Hillary Clinton can still win but it's going to take a bit of quick thinking and implementation of some key strategies.

I'm just imagining for a moment that I'm the coach at half time. My team was ahead in the first quarter and then let the opponent back in and now we trail by a touchdown.

I have to tell my team, "look, yes, we played horrific-ly in that quarter. We let the fans down. And that won't happen in the Second Half."

"We got comfortable."

"Now we have the second half where we can score and then go ahead or we can simply keep doing what we've been doing that got us here...and go home..."

Hillary gets all excited and says, "So what DO we do?"

Fair enough.

We have to spin...fast.

There are a few principles in sales and marketing in 2008 that have been adjusted in the last decade. Not changed, just different proportions of significance.

1) Trust and credibility are crucial. We can turn off our brain and do something else if we trust someone. We buy the brand because we KNOW it is good. You don't wonder whether you should get in iPod or go to Starbucks...you just do...

2) People want value. They want to know that what they are buying is really a good value. It's a better product than the rest of them. They want a lot in return for their stack of chips they are spending.

3) They want a good experience. Something unique, exciting, calming, soothing.

4) They want to be able to IDENTIFY with the person, the brand they are doing business with. And today, this is perhaps more important than anything. Is it going to be perceived as "cool" for me to vote for Hillary?

That question needs to be answered, "yes" by Hillary.

Not so long ago, Myspace.com was THE "space.com" to use, to network socially in. Then seemingly out of nowhere Facebook.com comes in and has not only caught myspace.com but is actually ahead of facebook.com in many ways that matter.

Hillary has to do what facebook.com has done.

Hillary must use the facebook model, accomplish the four key points above, and she can get back in the game.

If she doesn't, well, she doesn't.

So what do all the metaphors mean?

Facebook gave the people what they wanted. Facebook gave people a way to connect in unique and fun ways. Facebook let in other companies applications to run in facebook.

Result: Now you can buy someone a cyber-drink on facebook. You can reach out and touch someone without shouting at them or being so "dark" like myspace is.

Facebook gives you lots of ways to have a chance to be important.

Now myspace has to catch up.

Good luck.

In reverse order:

Hillary must go back to being a person that first and foremost women and white voters will identify with. She had those votes and she's given a lot of them back. She's tried to capture Obama's voters and has gotten off message.

Specifically, "In 2008, the United States of America will elect it's first president who works from sun up to sun down, puts the children to bed, makes breakfast in the morning and goes off to work at a job that people told her she couldn't ever aspire to, when she was a kid."

Now that will be enough right there to hammer home 5,000 times between now and Texas.

Every woman can identify with that. And quite a few men do as well.

You can't get Obama's demographic, and therefore you shoot for the people in the middle who decide races. Forget going after everyone. It's the people who were for Clinton, now leaning Obama that Clinton needs to get back.

Specifics:

It's time to send husband Bill out of country for a week to 10 days. This campaign MUST be about Hillary and NOT Bill. Bill can come back later and help sew it up, but right now, media attention often has as many photos and articles about the former president as it does the former FIRST LADY, who is running for president.

It seems counter-intuitive to ask a former -resident ...who is your husband...to take a break for 10 days...but he needs to get out of the spotlight.

One person making mistakes is hard enough. Two people means there are twice as many reasons to NOT vote for Hillary Clinton.

Next, gear up the message, not of change, but of a new era of responsible change where the person in the White House is the person who represents the person in YOUR HOUSE.

Hillary Clinton, good wife, good mother, good, hard-working, Senator. And so are those in "the middle" (well maybe they aren't great Senators but they see themselves as hard-working.)

As for the Iraq issue, she needs to simply put it behind her with one sweeping theme:

The men and women serving in Iraq will receive the full support of the American people and Presidency until it is safe to begin their withdrawal. Like it or not, progress has been made. Like it or not, we voted based on information that was given to us. Everything changes in retrospect, but the lives of American's depend on responsible actions now and then we bring our people home as soon as is humanly possible.

End of story.

The "experiencing" of Hillary Clinton is difficult compared to the charismatic Clinton. So use that to your advantage, Hillary.

"Mr. Obama, as you learn the ropes of Washington, you'll eventually find your way. It's easy to be charismatic when you haven't made enough decisions to make many mistakes yet. That will happen in time for you. Mistakes are where you gain your experience and learn what works and what doesn't. The presidency isn't about physical charisma, it is about connecting with people and understanding what they want and need."

Finally she must show value.

The people are buying a president and they don't want to screw up again.

They want someone like THEMSELVES running this country and Hillary must show that her VALUE is that she... is just like America.

She may have to show the nation that she can compete on an intense level, be passionate and show it. Show a powerful presence and literally go nose-to-nose with a man who is a foot taller than she is. If she wants votes she has to have the presence of leadership that Obama is good at projecting but we don't know if he truly has.

She can win but she needs to pull the husband from the game for a rest. She needs to focus on the voters who are considering her. Latinos, women and whites.

She has to understand that she can't try and appeal to everyone. Represent her demographic which this campaign has shown to be remarkably "about" since the beginning.

And she needs to embrace being the Underdog. America LOVES an underdog, especially Democrats. They will vote for the underdog if the person recognizes it publicly...much like the New York Giants did three weeks ago.

Never count out someone who thrives on being an underdog.

That's the spin that needs start tomorrow morning.

I'm an actual Texan - Hillary doesn't have a chance in my home state. Latinos will never give her 90% while African Americans will give that much support to Obama.
The rest of the vote is going for the plain spoken, inspiring, honest talk of Obama.
She will win Ohio, lose Texas and call it an enormous victory - because Texas doesn't count in her opinion. At least it won't count after they don't vote for her.

Uh, I might be rethinking that Starbucks analogy.
Didn't they recently decide they were WAY too "over-extended" with a downswing in profits? Didn't they make the decision to close a bunch of stores, get rid of some of the old strategies/people who went with them? Didn't they decide to wholly focus on coffee again? Didn't they decide to trot out a "McBuck cup-o-joe" to compete with "McBusinesses" out there?

Hmm, then again..that kind of thinking might be exactly what the Clinton campaign needs. Just substitute with appropriate PolitiCampaign jargon/strategy. Seems like..with their campaign clean-up, change of key people, focus on the "actions, not ideas" mentality, shoring up more-o-the $ingle buck$ = million$ donation$..the message now directed at her base, should be the economyeconomyeconomy!

AND, they need to call Obama out on the misogyny factor, with the recent "PERIODically, when she's feeling down" added to the "claws" & "having tea with ambassadors" comments. Yes, there is the double-edge sword that she will be called "too sensitive, emotional or over-reacting"..also misogynistic. That may play to the Obama supporters who will call it playing the sexist card, but in my opinion, it will also play to women who have had that very same experience in their own personal/professional lives!

In the movie "The Women"..wronged/victorious, Mary, has a line at the end of the movie, that Obama might appreciate...(sic) "I've had to grow claws, Jungle Red and now they're coming out." Yeah, yeah, I know..she was fighting for her man, but since Barack has conjured up all kinds of visions, he just may have something there with the claws..Hillary should sharpen hers! (dare I say that for fear of being the "pot calling the kettle black?"..oops! Ala, Obama.."that was not my intent.")

~But the silver-tongued devil's got nothing to lose,
I'll only live 'til I die.
We take our own chances and pay our own dues,

It wasn't all that long ago plenty of people were saying John McCain was toast, too. Now he's in the best position to win the republican nomination. I'll believe Hillary Clinton is toast when someone other than her gets the democratic nomination, and not one second before.

yeah, but by that logic, McCain isn't out of the bread bin yet either is he ?

Good point. No McCain isn't, and many of us republicans are hoping he doesn't win enough delegates to clinch the nomination so the race goes into a brokered convention and we can nominate a more approriate candidate. Clinton can still either make a comeback and win enough delegates or win in a brokered convention. The point is, Obama is still hundreds of delegates away from clinching the democratic nomination, so many of his supporters are celebrating prematurely.

Go Kucinich/Dodd!

OK, barring that, seeing the Clinton machine crash will work, but I'm predicting this:

Hillary Wins both Texas and Ohio, two states known for being easily--um, handled? Then the rules re Florida and Michigan are rescinded and those go to her as well. Lastly, the Super Delegates, (why do I see Wiley Coyote at that phrase?) being DNC apparatchiks, flock to her new found momentum. and Obama is a footnote.

THAT is the Only way she can win it, Kevin!

She can't play the underdog, she was Mike Tyson coming into this race, an overwhelming favorite to win the nomination, a lead she blew.

And while you're advising her, coach, tell her all this wheedling and cajoling of superdelegates, and having Chelsea go to breakfast with them does more to alienate the average American voter than endear them to her. You're blatantly underscoring the fact that someone of privilege reaps the rewards of membership. We've been locked out of the country club long enough, thank you very much.

Hillary can't change her spots, or pant suits at this juncture. She can weep all she wants for this country, but its really her damaged pride which is at the core of those tears. She's a climber, whose arrogance has stranded her halfway up a mountain, while the Obama storm has engulfed her and her campaign.

She was the New England Patriots, America's darling until we found out the extent to which she would go to win.

Kevin,

She is in a delicate position and I have to wonder if anything but the "underdog" strategy will work. That seems to be the only "identifying" these voters will latch onto at this point. And I mean becoming humble and showing vulnerablility. Comedians do it all the time. It is just a matter of finding the right material and timing.

"Explaining" to folks that she identifies with them by understanding their plight doesn't solve their problems. I think that is where campaigns fail. Obama has a cult-like following because he is tapping into their wishes. He is making them think -- scratch that -- "feel" that we can become the ideal that we dream.

It will take a lot for people to change their loyalty. I know my vote is for Clinton in November.

Are there any Hillary supporters left out there? The way you people talk about her you'd think she was the anti-christ. She happens to be one of the smartest, toughest women in the world with very strong compassion and love for this country. I would put nothing past a women with these attributes. This country needs a womans perspective. There's nothing a woman can't handle. Women always get right back up after they have fallen and are used to not being given the credit they deserve. So, I don't count her out yet.

If she was to get into the White House would she do that thing again like they did back in the 90's where they use the Lincoln bedroom as a campaign fund raising device? That for me is enough right there to say no way to Hillary Clinton as president.

She may not be the anti-Christ (unless you're a Republican) but she isn't Our Lady of Lourdes or Indira Gandhi either. I can understand how many feminists would see Hillary as their candidate, but I think you're betting on the wrong horse. I never understood feminism to be about warmongering (votes for the Iraq war and supports Bush's confrontational stance against Iran), or breaking the ranks of solidarity with minorities by utilizing cheap and divisive campaign tactics to win at all costs. Nope, she is what she is and that is far less than advertized.

There is nothing a woman can't handle - I agree. Sadly, Hillary may not be the best woman or person for the job. Her accomplishments are quite dim compared to Obama:

In some respects (dare I say it) her accomplishements are dimmer those of Condi Rice. However, she is an extremely intelligent person who has a lot to offer. She just needs to get over it, end this nonsense, fire the idiots who ran her campaign and rally for the Secretary of State job (which she'd probably do a heck of a lot better than any available male candidate I might add).

Hillary needs to just stop talking about Iraq. She's positioned herself on that issue for the general election and was clearly hoping to skate through the primaries in spite of her position...which thanks to Obama she hasn't been able to do.
It's as clear to anyone who is paying attention that she thought of her vote on the AUMF primarily in terms of how it would affect her run for president and not on its own merit. This is inexcusable when innocent lives and those of our soldiers and marines are at stake. She just needs to hope Democrats will give her a pass on it (I don't) and must never broach the subject herself.

Alas, this is hardly halftime -- this is heading to the two minute warning, and down by a touchdown. She would need a brilliant drive or a hail mary to pull this one off... and also hope that Obama doesn't run another interception or come right back and score.

While a hail mary play isn't out of the question, just looking at the "coaching" and strategy of the past year tells you that the Clinton campaign couldn't put together a drive to save their life.

They planned everything on getting on the board first and then playing defense... they never had a strategy for falling behind.

They blew this campaign at the start by letting Obama be the "change" candidate in an election bound to be about change and big ideas, and as much about rejecting the ugly FEELING of the bush administration as reversing its ugly policies.

Paul Begala mournfully pointed out that they lost this one a long time ago, when they allowed Clinton to become the "incumbent" and "inevitable" candidate.

What freakin' ad wizard came up with this one? MARK PENN!!!

Hillary lost her so-called "Facebook" moment so long ago that it's not possible to get it back. Her campaign so far has been a model of what not to trust and how not to be credible, from its bad strategy to its horrible money management to its inability to find a message and, finally, to it's non-existent ground game. And she has lost her chance to get people to identify her as the candidate (or brand, if you will) they want to be seen with.

1) First, she's had two months now since Iowa to show how she wants voters to identify with her, this from a person we've all known much too intimately since 1992. People would have already bought into the idea that they identify with her if there was anything for them to identify with. Obviously, the majority has decided they identify better with Obama.

2) For some reason, you seem to think that we're all yearning for a mother figure to come and rescue us all from the boogey man in the closet. To pat us on the head and fix it all for us without us having worry our little heads about how that happens. Your proposed meme of "responsible change" is just another way of saying we voters are much too stupid and naive know that Obama is some sort of irresponsible empty suit and we should all grow up, get some therapy, and let mama take care of us.

3) Your answer to the Iraq issue is no different than the one she is currently giving. And that one hasn't worked yet. I, for one, won't accept that sort of non-apology or non-admittance of a mistake. I take responsibility for the mistakes I make all the time and she should be no different than I.

4) She cannot compete with Obama's ability to project emotional commitment and passion. Her personality is diametrically opposed to it. Suddenly she'll be able to project the motivational, grassroots message of a campaign that's all about people power? I don't think so.

Earth to Hogan! Earth to Hogan! Come in Hogan.

In order for Clinton to even end up close to Obama in pledged delegates she is going to have to win every remaining contest by wide margins. If Obama wins either Texas or Ohio then it is game-over for Clinton. If she does not get more pledged delegates than Obama and she tries to win either by changing the rules for MI and FL or by strong-arming superdelegates then her career as a Democrat will be over.

If you want a better football analogy it is like we are a little over halfway through the regular season and she is one game away from being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Her approval rating in her home state, while still high, is plummeting. She should really quit while she is ahead. Staying in longer, especially if she launches more negative attacks, will only further damage her political career.

Way too little. Way too late. In hindsight the only way she could have done it (delegate/superdelegate monkey-business notwithstanding) would have been to somehow spin the 90's into some paragon of democracy in America, and to very actively promote the idea of a 'twofer'- a 'Go with what you Know' type deal. Might have worked with dems but would obviously pose problems otherwise.

Her camp's big mistake was setting themselves in opposition to Obama whereas camp Obama's genius was to set themselves in opposition to the entire system.
You just can't oppose optimism and hope. It comes across as pessimistic and hopeless.

Big mistake to use the phrase 'empty rhetoric'- made people turn around and say; "waitasecond.. that stuff is important!.."

Big mistake to push the 'experience/ accomplishments' thing- made people say "ok let's look at the record: hmm.. 20 bills about naming post offices in 6 yrs versus 150 about immigration, nuclear proliferation and government transparency in just 1 year... say what?"

Big mistake by letting phrases like 'latte-drinkin', prius-drivin' teenyboppers' (or whatever that idiot said) stand without correction- generally bad form to call people you want to vote for you names.

Biggest mistake of all to let your campaign self destruct during the process and to be apparently plan-free after super Tuesday- doesn't speak very well to management skills.

Isn't the "end of story" approach exactly what Hillary has been using on Iraq all along? Sorry, but that's not going to cut it. What Hillary should have done is show some backbone (and foresight) in 2002 and voted against authorizing Bush's war. Having failed to do that, she should have joined John Edwards in clearly admitting the error of her vote and demonstrating the lesson that you would have her teach Barack Obama -- that she has learned from that horrible mistake.

The truth is that Hillary Clinton is going to lose this nomination, not because she isn't as charismatic as Obama or even because her campaign organization has been shoddy to say the least. She is going to lose because she took the wrong position on the war and then stuck with it in an effort to appease voters on the right. I guess it never occurred to her that there would be a lasting left backlash. She let Obama into the game early on when the white left flocked to him as the anti-war (from the beginning) candidate and funded his campaign. And once this charismatic, brilliant man had an opening -- he took it and ran. And that, I hope, should change the calculations of future presidential wannabes confronted with important decisions about war and peace.

mr. hogan

did it not occur to you, as you were writing this piece and delineating your 4 key principles, that these are the very things that barack obama has been and is doing brilliantly?

the difference between hillary and barack is that you don't have to lay it out and then explain it to obama -

while you are describing what hillary needs TO DO you are also eloquently describing who barack obama IS and why so many american voters have such enthusiasm for his candidacy
