What Nicki Minaj Can Learn From M.I.A.'s Middle Finger

Posted: 02/ 6/2012 1:18 pm

The day after Madonna performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show, much of the conversation concerns a single wayward digit.

When M.I.A. flipped the bird to the 150 million or so people watching the game, she ignited a Twitter and media frenzy. NBC and the NFL have been trading barbs all morning about the incident, with NFL blaming the network's delay system for failing to censor the gesture and NBC blaming the NFL for hiring M.I.A. and producing the show. It should come as no surprise that the Parents Television Council is also irate (because kids have never seen a middle finger before!).

Meanwhile, no one's talking about Nicki Minaj, who performed with M.I.A. and Madonna on the latter's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'." And it's not because Minaj is averse to attracting attention via controversy. From her always wacky outfits to her rapping style (half aggressive, half cupcake sweet), Minaj is as much of a provocateur as M.I.A. She's just not as good at it.

M.I.A.'s name recognition is vastly disproportionate to the number of people who can name a song of hers other than "Paper Planes," the 2007 single that featured prominently in Best Picture-winner Slumdog Millionaire. And while Minaj seemingly puts out new music every week, she has diluted her brand by playing her speakers at full blast, all the time (speaking of which, here's her new song).

If Minaj wants to achieve real staying power, she needs to slow down to M.I.A.'s pace. Every year or so, the London-born singer does something that's provocative enough to gain exposure but not obnoxious enough to alienate her fans. (And for those who think last night's display will hurt M.I.A.'s career, let's get real: she made an obscene hand gesture. During an event where men turn their bodies into projectiles to send one another to the hospital. America will survive.)

Think of Truffle-Fry-Gate, when M.I.A. tweeted the phone number of New York Times Magazine reporter Lynn Hirschberg after Hirschberg mocked the singer for her taste in haute fast food. Or the time she performed in a sheer top while nine months' pregnant, at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Or the time she released the video for "Born Free," which was swiftly -- and noticeably -- censored by media outlets. Or her complicated support for the Tamil Tigers, a violent Sri Lankan rebel group.

Recognizing M.I.A.'s strength in branding is not the same as endorsing her career. It would be great if she could build a reputation on the strength of her music and her philanthropic work in Liberia. But Minaj seems hellbent on going down the same path, so she might as well do it correctly.

What moments in Nicki Minaj's career have any lasting intrigue? Whether one finds M.I.A.'s actions foolhardy at best and grating at worst, her career is punctuated by memorable moments -- something Minaj can't claim. At least not yet.

While I agree that Nicki Minaj tends to do WAY too much, I don't think she needs to take notes from M.I.A. Minaj has already broken records and has a platinum record. I think it would be best if Nicki stuck to artistry and stayed away from all of the gimmicks.

I find it funny how people are judging M.I.A on one incident and haven't even listened to her music. Sure, she made one mistake on television. Lots of people have. Americans need to get over this. It's really pathetic. It was a finger shown on television. It really shouldn't have ignited such a debate like this.

Madonna stacks up v. MIA about like Beiber stacks up against Elvis. One is a genuine talent, the other is a marketing genius.

I would give Madonna a little bit more credit than that she used to be good right?

I am 58, consider myself pretty hip (run programs for youth) I like Bruce Springsteen, Patsy Cline, Il Volo, Oak Ridge Boys, TuPac, The Beatles, Tim McGraw, Kanye, MIA and Nicki. Dependg on my mood, the weather, how far I have to drive, ETC... each has it's place in my life.
A rapper may not be a singer... Eminem & Kanye turned that around a bit, though.. lol
A Christina Aguilera Em & Ye may not be, BUT it IS MUSIC and it too is GREAT!
Whitney in her prime or Lil' Wayne... BOTH are on my iPod. As is everyone else on this post.
NO ONE has a right to say "this" or "that" isn't music OR that it's BAD....

Paper planes was a good song. Other than that I don't know what else she's done.

Listen to Arular, Kala and |\/|/\Y/\. I'm sure you'll be able to find other songs you like on any one of those albums.

She performed Paper Planes 9 months pregnant on stage which is probably another memorable moment they're talking about..

What they both need to learn is that bubblegum pink lipstick should be restricted to those under age 8 and Barbie dolls.
Or maybe kewpie dolls.
Yuck.

Very depressing to see an article that would suggest the lamest of the lame planned juvenile theatrics should be considered some key to success, rather than, you know, actual talent.

Again, not a single person I know was shocked by this incident. Even my 10 year old nephew gave it a roll of his eyes and a smirk, sarcastically wondering if "oh, it that supposed to mean she's cool now?" [for doing that on live TV].

Whatever supposedly edgy or hardcore image this person is trying to create, this was an epic fail on her part. Sad, childish and desperate ploys for attention never come off well and this one was no exception.

> M.I.A.'s name recognition is vastly disproportionate to the number of people who can name a song of hers other than "Paper Planes"

......aaaaaaand articles like this don't exactly help. Pretty much none of the press surrounding M.I.A. focuses on her music, although M.I.A. herself certainly seems complicit in the hypemongering with stunts like the one she pulled Sunday night. But she has released three full albums of respectable electronic music, combining hip-hop with more exotic elements of world music. She's definitely more than a middle finger and a nasty attitude.

Actually you've done the honor of informing me she had a song called Paper Planes. I know of her because of her connection to the Bronfmans and that's pretty much it.

Most of the people commenting her just don't get MIA. That's ok though. I don't think MIA cares much what people think about her.

Paper Planes was totally Diplo's too, though. Let's give the man some cred.

She cares every much what people think of her because what people think of her defines her success.
