Goal setting. You hear the phrase all the time. "Set your goals and you will have a better chance of achieving them."
I have to be honest. I was never into goal setting. Setting weight loss goals? Are you kidding me? Here's a goal for you, "I'm 350 pounds and I want to lose this stupid weight!" There, how's that for a goal. Yup, that was me. But not everyone is blind to the values of goal setting.
I don't know much about his personal life, his faith or his political convictions, but one of the greatest goal setters of our time is actor Will Smith. I've never seen anyone so focused about the way he faces life. In a recent interview he told the story of how one summer his dad tore down a brick wall in front of their family business and then told 12 year old Will and his 9 year old brother to rebuild it. They told their dad that it was impossible. He told them to do it. It took them a year and a half, but they did it. Upon completion Will's dad said to his sons, "Now don't you ever tell me there's something that you can't do." In the interview Will said these words, "You don't try to build a wall. You don't set out to build a wall. You don't start there. You say, 'I'm going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid.' You do that every single day. And soon you have a wall."
Wow. Great stuff, huh?
That's what WE need to do! Our goal isn't to build a WALL. Our goal is to lay ONE perfect brick! We don't need to lose 212 pounds, but we do have to make sure that we work hard today. We write it down and stick with our plan - meal by meal, snack by snack, moment by moment - today. And the best way to do that is to set small goals.
Think about it. If you're making short-term goals, achieving them and rewarding yourself FREQUENTLY - doesn't that MOTIVATE you? Encourage you? Everyone is looking for 'ways to stay motivated' and 'ways to stay on program'. Well, this is it. And it's fun.
