Bristol Palin: Ask Your Mom About Defending Women

Posted: 03/22/2012 7:08 pm

Bristol Palin, daughter of Sarah Palin, has penned an open letter to President Obama saying she is waiting for his phone call of sympathy -- a la Sandra Fluke. The President recently offered his support to Fluke, the Georgetown law student who started a national conversation after being called a "slut" and a "prostitute" by conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

Bristol wrote to Obama in a blog, "You explained to reporters that you called (Fluke) because you were thinking of your two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After all, you didn't want them to think it was OK for men to treat them that way... Now that you're in office, it seems you're only willing to defend certain women."

Bristol and Momma Grizzly have issue with President Obama's acceptance of a $1 million dollar Super Pac donation from Bill Maher, the Democratic television host of "Real Time With Bill Maher" who has (in the past) made crude remarks about Sarah Palin and her family. Bristol adds in the close of her letter -- "What if you did something radical and wildly unpopular with your base and took a stand against the denigration of all women... even if they're just single moms? Even if they're Republicans?"

When asked for her two cents, former Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin defended Rush Limbaugh's assault on Sandra Fluke, saying Limbaugh was within his rights:

I think the definition of hypocrisy is for Rush Limbaugh to have been called out, forced to apologize and retract what it is that he said in exercising his First Amendment rights and never is that... the same applied to the leftist radicals who say such horrible things about the handicapped, about women, about the defenseless. So I think that's the definition of hypocrisy, and that's my two cents.

Leftist radicals? Any relations to the Girl Scout radicals?

I find it ironic that Palin and child would gripe about the President and cry hypocrisy when Sarah Palin is on public record giving a pardon to the attack of another woman. Sandra Fluke was speaking at an unofficial Democratic Party hearing about the fact that Georgetown, a Jesuit University, fails to provide contraceptive coverage -- which in turn makes contraceptives prohibitively expensive for some members of its female student body. A man who has been called "the mouthpiece of the Republican Party propaganda machine" unfairly targeted Ms. Fluke. And yes, Bill Maher has said offensive things about the Palin family, and I'm not saying that's acceptable because it's not. But we must look at the bigger picture.

Sarah Palin is part of the problem. She's a politician who has contributed to the mud-slinging and the toxic political climate that has been a turn off for so many. She has headlined hate-filled tea party rallies and lent her support to a very non-inclusive Republican agenda. There have been shameful violations of women's rights on behalf of the Republican Party. The extreme right of that party is to thank for amendments in several states preventing in vitro fertilization and access to birth control, for criminalizing a woman's right to choose -- even in the case of rape and incest. Palin's views on women's rights do no match up with her gender, which makes the pill even harder to swallow.

During Sarah Palin's time as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, the town charged women for rape exam kits -- which can cost anywhere up to $1,000. This practice added insult to injury for rape victims in Alaska, which ranks number one in the nation for rape per capita. These are not new numbers, and this has been a problem in my home state for years. During my sophomore year at University of Alaska, Fairbanks, I became a statistic. Even though it was paid for by University insurance, I turned down the rape kit because it is extremely intrusive. Also, I was able to identify my attacker. They didn't need semen to catch him. Had this happened 300 miles up the road in Wasilla, Alaska, I would have been victimized all over again and forced to pay out of pocket for a dehumanizing rape kit - even though I was the one who was assaulted. Rape victims in Alaska have been very vocal about Sarah Palin's shortcomings, and the fact that women had to endure that on her watch is appalling. It's a problem that any attentive Alaskan lawmaker takes quite seriously.

Almost two years ago, President Obama signed the Affordable Health Care Act, a law that protects women. It covers preventative services like cancer screening and mammograms. It protects senior citizens and small business owners. And after August 1st 2012, it will cover female contraception. As of 2014, insurance companies can no longer deny women coverage because of a preexisting condition. Among his many Presidential accomplishments, Obama signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help close the gender gap. He extended the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit for women and families. He has appointed more women and minorities to the federal branch than any President in the history of the United States. Is Obama perfect -- has his administration been perfect? Of course not, we've never had and never will have a perfect President. But no one could contest that Obama has been a champion for women.

The President accepted money from someone who was vocal about his dislike for Sarah Palin -- and SarahPAC has raked in millions from those who have been vocal about their dislike for the President. What's the difference? Let's just call that like it is. If what Sarah Palin said was hypothetically true -- if Rush Limbaugh was within his First Amendment rights to attack Sandra Fluke on the national airwaves -- why wasn't Bill Maher within his rights to attack her from his platform? Why does Sarah Palin feel she's somehow the exception to the rule and shout injustice after she's dished it out?

I know Bristol is young and seeking answers, but she should begin by asking her mother the same questions: why didn't and why doesn't she do something radical and wildly unpopular with her base and take a stand against the denigration of all women... Even if they're a Democrat -- like Sandra Fluke?

That would be a much more compelling story.

Hope that the Quitta from Wasilla and the Queen of Abstinence have figured out by now that the call isn't coming. The President has more important things to do than smooth the ruffled feathers of this dysfunctional family. Time to grow up, Palins. If you don't want people to call you names, you need to behave better and stop all your nastiness. Usually, if everyone thinks that you are a family of clowns, there is a valid reason. If everyone refers to you as Dumb and Dumber, or the Queen of Mean and the Queen of Greed, it is a hint that your behavior is not good. If you have to waste your money and hire all those media people trying to improve your image, you might think that you should take some responsibility so that every day we don't see an article about you "attacking" or "slamming" some public figure. Just because you make more money than all of these public servants, you should not think that you are the slave master and that you are entitled to be treated better. None of us know why the Palins think they can be rude to everyone; or why they think that they can lie and nobody will figure it out. I cannot think of one family in America that has so many people who are simply tired of hearing the Palin family's divisive and polarizing comments; but this family just never will stop and listen instead of yapping.

I thought the republicans hate apologies. "we do not apologize" is their motto. They say the president goes on "apology tours". now they want him to apologize...... make up your minds republicans.......lol

Stunning!! You completely miss the whole point. Sarah Palin does not have the platform you suggest to speak against the denigration of all women. By the way she has stated such comments in the past (look up Letterman incident), but she is ignored by the Press unless they believe they can find something (such as you did here), to GET HER in order to fill the negative narrative that fits your audience. The only problem that exists in this episode is President Obama inserting himself in a First Amendment argument that he has no business doing so unless he is going to call out all sides.

As far as "She has headlined hate-filled tea party rallies and lent her support to a very non-inclusive Republican agenda. " I have been to numerous Palin led TEA Party rallies and Sarah Palin has not spoken up against HATE-Filled comments, because there hasn't been any. I wasn't until the TEA Party started getting National Press that the typical Radical LEFT (OWS) types started showing up that any negative voices were heard at these rallies.

"Palin's views on women's rights do no match up with her gender, which makes the pill even harder to swallow." You obviously have not read the latest Gallup poles: More Women consider themselves PRO-LIFE today then they do Pro-Choice.

PART 2

Why not ask your mother and her friends for an apology since yourbso desperate? Again, As you so clearly stated present obama has already come out your defense so I'm confused as to wh I'm glad you think that you are so important in the course of national issues that the president has to come out and personally apologize to you again over things other ENTERTAINERS say. Maybe those people were actually on to something considering the hilarity of your personal life back then so I dont know what your complaining about.

as bristol has so eloquently explain in her letter the president has already apologized to her about the comments made by the media regarding her own hypocritical stance on having sex before marriage and becoming a teen mother. I'm sure your mother was really happy about that.

Most importantly, however, the fact that an ENTERTAINER like Maher made fun of your situation in the press is not the same as the way this woman was attacked on the airwaves by a NATIONAL POLITICAL LOBBYIST like Limbaugh, its just not the same and you know it. You did not become the most important person talked about in particular new cycle for a long period of time regarding an issue that is so politically charged that it is far greater than just one person. Maher didnt ask to see your sex tape or pursue over the course of three days a seemingly personal vendetta against a woman REPUBLICANS aka YOUR MOMS party DENIED the right to speak atbthe hearing on the matter.

Perhaps bristol should asking where was the republican outrage, and protests when i was called names?
There wasn`t any because republicans don`t care about you or any women.
Instead of asking why your adversaries won`t show you mercy you should be asking why your allies won`t stand beside you and fight with you and for you.

There is only one altar at the Palin home. The shrine to Mammon.
01:12 PM on 03/23/2012
Did Pitt Morony , Dick Satanum or Pewt Dingrich call her? What would these so called christian repubs call a woman that has a child out of wedlock and shacks up with her son and two guys that aren't the father on a reality show?
12:31 PM on 03/23/2012
I think you're changing the issue. Which is the fact that the President called and apologized to Ms. Fluke for comments made by Rush Limbaugh. But failed to make any effort towards Sarah Palin in regards to comments made by Bill Maher. Both Maher and Limbaugh are certainly within their rights to make the comments they did, though they were wrong to do so, and there are no rules about a President apologizing for someone else making comments.
So it's not OK for Sarah Palin to not call on Rush to apologize but it's OK for someone like Bill Maher to make highly derogatory and nasty statements about a woman and not be called out?

It seems to be that Sarah Palin has done exactly what the President has done. He did call on Bill to apologize so why should she call on Rush to do so?
12:25 PM on 03/23/2012
Boo Hoo. Give me a sponge for the tears. The Palins probably think Rush Limbaugh is the Victim in this.
12:14 PM on 03/23/2012
Let's not forget that Rush Limbaugh is the defacto leader of the crippled republican party who is using public airwaves and Bill Maher is a comedian on a private cable channel which citizens must pay for individually out of their own pockets to view.

Imissgeorgew
That's what she said.

Hateful tea party rallies? Apparently you haven't been to an OWS protest.

Bristol Palin does inf act deserve a call from the president as he called Fluke. Sarah Palin needs to remove herself from this. I think her daughter is doing just fine without her.

Sarah Palin and her family are the worst kind of people. They hide behind God, think they are better than everyone else and Sarah is clearly vindictive. The only thing she has to offer is her comments about how Obama is doing such a bad job. Alternative? Of course not, that would mean should would actually have to work, she is laughing at all of you who support her. Why don't you people get that???

Bristol can say whatever she likes, but that doesn't mean that she represents the majority of women in this country. She certainly doesn't represent me. As for Sarah Palin defending Rush Limbaugh's harsh language, well, that's Sarah. Let's not forget that during the 2008 campaign when she was speaking to an audience that was saying "kill him" about Obama that she stood silent, smiling. John McCain stepped forward and said that type of talk wasn't acceptable. Sarah didn't. Let's also not forget the map she posted on SarahPac that placed a target over the district of each Representative that voted for the Affordable Care Act. Neither of those acts were Christian, at least as I understand Christianity. Also, are there any Christians out there who remember Jesus' story of the Good Samaritan? Jesus ecouraged us to take care of each other, just as the Good Samaritan paid for the injured man's health care. This brand of "Christianity" that the Palins espouse isn't what I find in my Bible.

"I know Bristol is young and seeking answers,"

No, The Palins think they have all the answers. She is young and seeking a shortcut to fame and fortune by riding her mother's coat tails. The apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.
