The war against terror is obviously running amuck in Oklahoma. Just last week, born again Sally Kern, one of the more detestable elected officials in this country, was once again modeling how fear and hate mongering can be a dandy way to fire up the Republican base.
In a speech delivered for a conservative Christian group that she never expected to be taped and released, good-old-girl Sally said that gays and lesbians were the "biggest threat "our nation has ever faced "even more than terrorism or Islam..." She goes on to say that gays are "infiltrating" city councils, responsible for the demise of world societies and compared being gay to a "cancer" that apparently needs to be cut out. Hitler had nothing on this woman.
Every thinking citizen of this country should write to Rep. Chris Benge, Speaker of the House for the Oklahoma House of Representatives asking for censure of this terrorist. Free speech is not a license to incite hate and violence, and sadly that is what this ugly oration is all about. Today, in regions all over this country where ignorant people actually accept these stupid lies as having some basis in fact, school-aged boys and girls who may appear a little more feminine or masculine than Sally thinks is appropriate are going to be terrorized by peers who listen to this crap because their parents listen to this crap. And that's just for starters. This type of terrorism is the genesis of all hate crimes from name calling to murder.
George Bush may have had one thing right. The war on terror begins at home. But instead of profiling innocent Americans simply because of their ethnic background, maybe we should start profiling elected officials who make speeches without any academic or factual merit as a means to exploit and manipulate their uneducated constituents. If Oklahoma is where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, perhaps a big gust will sweep Sally Kern out of office and to a place where she can no longer promote hate, violence and bigotry.

I've been posting about this for several days, and I've written two open letters to Sally Kern:
My Apology to Sally Kern (formerly referred to as Sally Kearn)

and
Sally, Sally, Sally. You said it’s your right to say anti-gay things. What happened to, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”?

The thing is, it IS a Free Speech issue, that's why it makes us so angry. But my problem isn't with the First Amendment protecting speech that's meant to preach hate and intolerance, it's that the Religious Right in this country draw wisdom and inspiration -- such as it is; Leviticus can be a real ass-kicker -- from a wholly theistic text and then demand these ancient dogmas be clothed in secular armor when those ideas prove to be deeply offensive to The Rest Of Us. It's high irony indeed that ANYTHING in the Bible should need First Amendment protection when we understand the latter to be only as strong as the most hurtful speech it protects. We don't need the First Amendment when the speech is loving, gracious, tolerant and inspiring; why the Bible, of all things, should ever need the Constitution's protection to give voice to its ideas is beyond me.

Today she's calling gays dangerous. Tomorrow it may be Blacks or Jews or Hispanics or Atheists. She's the dangerous one.

This is the same crap Fred Phelps preaches. I wonder if she'll be out there picketing funerals of our fallen and brave soldiers....hmmm......I think Sir Barkley said it best...."FAKE CHRISTIANS".
Yes Sir Charles is right on..
is this what her husband, pastor steve kern, preaches in o.k.city on sunday morning from the olivet baptist church's pulpit?
these so-called christians give jesus a bad name
Ms. Kern would be at right at home in Islamic society, where the penalty for homosexuality under is death.
Remember this is a hot topic issue for a lot of people. How many states had some kind of a gay issue on the ballots for the 2006 elections?
In fact I know of 2 or three people that said more or less the same things. That if two people of the same sex get married that is a greater threat to ‘Our way of life’ than the war. A good Christian said this. This is why I no longer go to church.
Any attempt by Democratic leaders to go after this hateful creature only exposes their own hypocrisy with respect to the right of gays and lesbians to form families that are recognized by the state. Either Sally Kern is right and gays and lesbians are a threat to the American way of life or they are a group of Americans who are being denied their fundamental human right to form legally sanctioned families. You can't keep having it both ways, saying to gays, "We'll defend you from the most vicious verbal attacks but when it comes to real equality, forget about it."
You don't even link this to a news story or even another blog. Where's this info coming from?

WAIT A MINUTE! W has never suggested that the "war on terror begins at home"! He has always maintained that it begins in Afghanistan and Iraq and perhaps in Iran, if he can get away with it.
But Snyder's comments on Sally Kern and her ilk are spot-on, though I prefer to categorize the proper response to such evil utterances not as an extention of a "war on terror," but rather as an effort to see that psychotics get appropriate help.
Still and all, it's pretty hard for the Democrats to take a hard stance against this hateful creature when they are compromised by their refusal to support full marriage rights and recognition for gay families. Either Sally Kern got it right and gays or a threat to everything the country stands for or she got it completely wrong and gays are a group of Americans whose fundamental human right to form a recoganized family is being trampled on. You can't have it both ways.
I agree with what you're saying, but Sally Kern is in the Oklahoma Senate, not the US House of Representatives.
How crazy is this woman? So the first thing that made me go "holy lord" was "gays are more of a threat than terrorists." Then I relistened to the interview, and she said "AND ISLAM." Yes, she didn't even clarify "radical islam" or "islamofacists". She is specifically categorizing Islam as a threat to the USA. Not as big of a threat as gays, but a threat none-the-less.
Then if you can manage to continue listening, she FURTHER goes on to say something to the effect of, I'm paraphrasing here as I can't really handle listening to her again, "it's a proven fact that that life-style is unhealthy and has negative outcomes." A proven fact eh? I'd like to hear some more details on this.
I like how she and her supporters were trying to frame this as a "what's wrong? She's just using her right to free speech." issue. This isn't a free speech issue, this is an elected official preaching hate. Additionally, as an elected official, surely she knows that free speech isn't absolute, I'm sure she took government or civics classes as some point in her life.
