On the heels of New York Fashion Week and its self-serving ways, the amfAR New York Gala managed to once again remind the city's power players that there's more to life than the new store opening in SoHo or debating whether Ms. Alt will hold a candle to Carine.
Gathering the best of film, fashion, politics, media, and more, the amfAR Gala at Cipriani Wall Street served its purpose in uniting a city and its deep pockets to give back to a cause that has affected so many close to those industries. The benefit, which raised more than $1.5 million for AIDS research, honored President Bill Clinton (introduced by his daughter Chelsea), Diane von Furstenberg (introduced by her loving husband Barry), and Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Spotted around the room: W Editor-in-Chief Stefano Tonchi and recently-departed French Vogue queen Carine Roitfeld; Hamish Bowles working the room with Amanda Cutter Brooks; Nur Khan strolling in (fashionably) late with Irina Lazareanu and her dark-haired (and dressed) posse; Barry Diller telling the crowd of his wife Diane's remarkable comeback from a ski accident courtesy her "yeoman ways"; PR King Paul Wilmot with perhaps the best date of the night, Iman; and Harvey Weinstein speaking quite genuinely about perhaps the one cause he's passionate about that is not currently "The King's Speech."
