It's a common complaint among travelers planning a trip to NYC. "I can't find a comfortable, well-located hotel in Manhattan for under $150 a night. What shall I do?"
My answer: get off the island.
There's a trend of Brooklyn boutiques, such as NU Hotel (85 Smith Street, New York, NY, 718-852-8585) that combine luxury with a laid-back atmosphere.
In this new "Travel SOS" video, I look at the upsides of booking in Brooklyn, NY.
1) Location. If you stay in downtown Brooklyn, you're a 10-15 minute subway ride from the Lower East Side, SoHo and the East and West Villages.
2) Spacious rooms. $150-175 a night will get you a shoebox in Manhattan. However at NU, the average room measures 275 square feet. Some suites even have hammocks.
3) Modern and wired. The hotel offers free iPad rentals and has a cloud system for one-touch room service and wake-up calls.
4) Brooklyn rocks. A more relaxed pace and a greener environment. I enjoyed the colorful local art, indie boutiques, concerts and cafes.

What are your favorite Brooklyn hangouts? Have you ever stayed in this borough?
