"Plenty of Fish in the Sea" Cliché Crisis

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Let's start with the depressing facts: 90% of tuna, cod, and swordfish are already gone, and by 2048 the rest will be gone, along with the rest of all the other fish.

Now, here's what's really alarming: when your best friend's heart is broken, you can no longer say, "You're better off! There are plenty of fish in the sea."

So, we are clearly faced with a crisis. What can we say instead? Here are a few initial thoughts:

"There are plenty of birds in the sky." Unfortunately, this is also probably not going to be the case for very long.

"There are plenty of elk in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge." Same as above.

"There are plenty of trees not yet killed by acid rain." Doesn't really sing.

"There's plenty of oxygen in the atmosphere." Well, two problems: one is, it's not a very good metaphor, the other is, this also won't be the case for long.

"There are plenty of corrupt Republicans still in Congress." True, but it probably won't cheer up your best friend very much.

"There are plenty of civil wars we haven't started." Yeah, but . . .

Please help, because we're going to need something else to say very, very soon.
