Norman Lear Predicted The Circus of Truthiness

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Mr Lear, one of the great satirists of our time, virtually predicted the current circus of truthiness we call our government ten years ago with his genius Mastergate, first produced as a play and then a SHOWTIME film. It is a prescient, surreal indictment of the lengths the liars will go to to fool the American people as well as delude themselves. What felt like brilliant post-60's, post-Strangelove political comedy at the time now feels like a documentary. Like Twain and Vonnegut, we owe him a debt of gratitude both as a visionary and moral comedian who 'speaks to the masses,' as well as an inspiration to the generations of writers who have come after him.

If you can find or rent Mastergate, do so, not just to be awed by it's prescience, but to get a sense of what America was like when it actually understood satire, back in the pre-Borat days.Alas, now we're supposed to find Little Miss Sunshine and Nacho Libre funny."

Norman would be the first person to tell you the true author of Mastergate.

And he, too, would also not kiss Ms. Coulter for five dollars.
