For the past few weeks I have been organizing tables of volunteers on the weekends to help Hillary on Manhattan's West Side. We've been passing out literature and selling buttons to spread the word about Hilllary. Usually at the end of a long afternoon we'd be through most of the bag of buttons I had brought. That changed this past weekend big time. I had others open the table both Saturday and Sunday and by the time I got there an hour later the buttons were gone. The people at the table were pressing me to get more. We could barely put buttons on the table before they were snapped up. To me this shows the strength of Hillary's support in a neighborhood where Obama has been getting some visibility.

Westsiders have long been at the forefront of many progressive movements whether it is for women's rights or civil rights. While our temperament may have mellowed a bit since our "People's Republic" days as apartment prices and average income levels have soared we are still home to many of the most liberal elected officials in the country and we love them. It's a community that might take someone like Obama under its wing. He might be getting the buzz, but I think that my neighbors have realized Hillary's lifelong record of progressive action and results is one we admire and that she'll work to achieve what we need, a government that works for people. In addition to my button sales someone else was getting hundreds of people to put Hillary stickers on their backs. So I'll take button sales over buzz to find out where the heart of a neighborhood is.

Well, this is one Upper West Sider whose vote she did not get.

Senator Edwards, clearly, was the strongest candidate, and when he bowed out of the race, I chose Senator Obama as the better choice of those who remained. My neighbors, also voting at 6 a.m., did the same thing.

We've had enough of the Clintons; it is time for change; it is time to restore some measure of accountability and decency.
