Women in Business Q&A: Rina Stein, Co-Founder of Philip Stein

Rina Stein is the Co-Founder of Philip Stein, the luxury wellbeing technology brand, and mother of seven children. Born in a small town in Israel to a large family, Rina learned about running a business early in life. At age 14, she went to work in her father's furniture shop, where her passion for business was ignited. During that time, Rina learned various aspects of running a company such as business management, inventory control, purchasing merchandise, and more. The invaluable experience of working at a young age gave her the confidence and knowledge to pursue her dreams. Rina moved to London to study English after finishing school and took a position working on fundraising efforts. A few years later she moved to New York to be with her family. In New York, Rina met her first husband with whom she had six children, and together they started a watch company, which they ran together until 1997. By 2002, newly married to Will Stein and with one more child on the way, they started the company Philip Stein.

Together with her husband, Rina learned about the benefits of natural frequencies to improve one's overall wellbeing. With this knowledge, Rina applied her 28 years of experience in the watch business with Will's ample marketing background, to offer a product which could not only make a physical statement in its unrivaled appearance, but also help improve its wearers' quality of life. Together with their experience in business and watch design, and through collaborating with scientists and experts in frequency technology, Rina and Will brought something new to the watchmaking landscape - a distinctive watch that provides the potential to improve its wearer's quality of life.

Within a year of the launch, the Steins were overwhelmed with testimonials from customers purporting better sleep, less tension, improved concentration and enhanced wellbeing. Rina and Will had always set out to create an iconic watch that helped people find balance and wellbeing. The "feel good watch", as it became known, wasn't popular simply because of its look, but also because it helped customers feel better on a day-to day basis. Currently sold in over 30 countries, Philip Stein is a dream that Will and Rina have been able to realize. Working together as one, and with seven happy children, their story adds a new chapter every day. Their vision now is that their magnificent journey--and their message of unity and responsibility--can be shared with millions of people world-wide.

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
I am one of many siblings and from an early age I learned that being a team player will bring greater success when working toward goals. In the professional environment, I have found it more productive to focus on building the right team, allowing them to express their opinions, and to learn from each other rather than preaching. Now, having been in the business for over 35 years, I can look back and say that being open-minded, cooperative in working with others, and most importantly committed has brought me to where I am today.

How has your previous employment experience aided your position at Philip Stein?
Being self-employed my entire life has proven to be the most rewarding yet challenging experience. Starting from the ground up, has taught me many valuable lessons. There have been many ups and downs, and my position at Philip Stein is a direct reflection of my ability as a business woman to stay committed to the brand and the message. In life and in work, you have to love what you do and believe in it as well.

What advice can you offer women who are seeking to have their own business?
Having seven children and Philip Stein is proof to women everywhere that it is possible to have both. As a woman you must look at yourself as a wearer of many hats. My advice to women wanting to start their own business, is to trust that she can be and do anything she wants, if she puts her mind to it. There aren't limitations; she can successfully be a wife, a mother, a business owner, or anything else that interests her. One of the many qualities that women possess is being able to multi-task, and that is what really makes us capable. Time management, organization, and a sense of priorities are the most important aspects of being able to balance owning a business and the demands of being a wife and mother.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Simplicity for me and my family is essential. I created a traditional lifestyle, incorporating time for work and time with my family. Making this time is what keeps balance in our lives. Running a company demands hard work, but you have to know when to stop and enjoy the moments of life that can easily escape us. Allowing myself to enjoy this time with my family is the key to my sanity.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?
From my experience, I believe that sometimes as women we can lend too much of our emotion into our work. We are loving and passionate creatures, we put our heart and soul into all that we do. Sometimes that passion creates too much emotion, which can cloud judgment and create issues in the work place. Finding the right balance of emotion and logic can help ease the situation.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life?
I would not say that I have a mentor, but I do follow and practice the basic principles of Kabbalah. Living a life in which the principles of Kabbalah and the traditions of Judaism guide me and my actions have given me strength not only in my professional life but in my role as a wife and mother.

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?
There isn't one specific leader, male or female, that I admire most. There is something to learn from every person and knowing that is a powerful tool for life and for business.

What do you want Philip Stein to accomplish in the next year?
Philip Stein has undertaken a repositioning to fully evolve into a wellbeing lifestyle and technology brand.
