Gossip Girl Recap: Top 5 OMG Moments in 'The Backup Dan'

Posted: 02/ 7/2012 12:14 am

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 5, Episode 14 of The CW's "Gossip Girl," entitled "The Backup Dan."

This week's "Gossip Girl" picked up right where the milestone 100th episode left off, with Blair turned Runaway Bride and the rest of the Manhattan apparently on the hunt for her. After the twists and turns of last week, "The Backup Dan" seemed choppy and strangely paced in comparison, lurching across New York as Blair and Dan tried to escape the evil Grimaldi clan and their Bond villain accents. Serena, Chuck and Georgina were hot on their heels, but since we ended up almost exactly where we started -- with Blair reluctantly departing for her honeymoon with a man she doesn't love -- it kind of felt like a wasted hour to me (not to mention one that offered up some deeply disturbing subtext for Blair's relationship with Louis -- but more on that later).

Regardless, here are the stand-out moments in an otherwise underwhelming episode.

1. My Love Don't Cost a Thing
Apparently, nothing creates a stronger foundation for marital bliss than prenuptial blackmail, at least, if you're royalty. After Blair discovered that Louis intended to keep her as a loveless trophy wife, she (understandably) decided to escape the display case, with her heart set on divorcing her new hubby without his consent in the Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Taylor-style.

Sadly, the pesky pre-nup that she was so reluctant to sign had some truly dastardly small print; if Blair defaulted on the marriage, then the Grimaldi family could reinstate the dowry they'd waived, forcing the Waldorfs to fork over a right royal fortune for the embarrassment. One would think that having a soulmate who happens to be a billionaire would come in handy during such a crisis, but Blair, masochist that she is, refused Chuck's offer to pay off the dowry. Their scene was as heartfelt as it was heartbreaking, with Chuck once again pleading for Blair to reconsider her pact with God and abandon Louis once and for all. While her refusal was undoubtedly frustrating for all the fans still rooting for Chuck and Blair to work things out, her reasoning was actually pretty solid, in this case: If and when the star-crossed couple finally ends up together, Blair wants them to be equals, without one owing the other anything. Considering how unequal their relationship has been in the past, I was actually impressed that she wanted to find her own way out of the mess she'd gotten herself into, without letting a man save her.

I suppose she was also morally right in stopping her mother from selling her business to help her, but that won't ease the stress and worry it'll place on her parents. Even though the story gave Blair a good opportunity to try and solve her own self-made problem, the overall plot point of a man blackmailing a woman into a marriage in exchange for money was an extremely troubling concept for me. (See Moment 5.)

2. Georgina Isn't Gossip Girl?
Nothing is ever as simple as it appears on this show, so even with last week's revelation still ringing in our ears, it didn't take long for Georgina to drop another bombshell. She confirmed what many predicted after last week: She is Gossip Girl's self-appointed successor, but not the original troublemaker. Isn't it nice to have your cake and eat it too? She's still sticking around to cause optimum damage, though -- stalking Serena and Chuck around town to discover where Blair was hiding from Louis -- but her evil plan backfired when the princess ended up back with her frog. Still, she obviously has another plan up her sleeve, since she knows who really leaked Blair and Chuck's video. Judging by the lingering shot of Dan we closed out the show with, he's our prime suspect. Was he simply hoping to drive a wedge between Blair and Chuck, since he knew everyone would assume that our resident Basstard was the sabotaging type?

3. A Dan For All Seasons
Though Humphrey spent most of the hour being treated like Blair's chauffeur, butler and personal bank account, the long-suffering Lonely Boy did finally put his foot down and insist that Blair should treat him less like a slave and more like a friend. And, horror of horrors, Queen B actually listened to him. Not only did she admit that she cares for him, she also gave him a thank you and an apology -- it just got very chilly in Hell. While I still don't think that Blair's in the right place mentally or emotionally to reciprocate Dan's obvious feelings, they undeniably have a real friendship now, and it's clear that Blair believed that she could rely on him to help her without all the baggage that Chuck or Blair would bring. What the girl really needs is a break from guys altogether -- some "me" time in the Dominican Republic probably would do. Still, their honest moment in the hotel bar was one of the most genuine of the episode.

4. Family Matters
Poor Lola Rhodes. No matter how well she thinks she's hidden herself from her mom's influence, there's no escaping family. Even when she's minding her own business and picking up odd jobs to pay for the dorms at Julliard, she just keeps getting pulled back into her aunt's orbit. Now we know why Carol seemed so convinced that her relatives would never run into the real Charlie: She thinks her daughter is safely hidden away in Michigan, not flirting with a guy whose family is almost as messed up as hers is. It's only a matter of time before Nate or Lily figure out the real family connection, (you can certainly see the fake resemblance -- kudos to the casting team) but will she get to confront Ivy in some kind of Charlie catfight, winner take all the inheritance?

5. OMG WTF? (a.k.a. What is "Gossip Girl's" obsession with treating its women like property?)
I hate to end on a sour note, but this time around, I feel like it's warranted. This is more of a meta OMG moment than a plot-driven one, but are the show's writers seriously unaware of how deeply problematic it is that they continue to write Blair as a commodity to be bought and sold by the men in her life? First, Chuck sold Blair for his hotel, and now, Louis has bought her for a year of marriage in exchange for a dowry. "Gossip Girl" has always walked a very dangerous line in failing to delineate between consensual and non-consensual acts (especially in storylines relating to Chuck). The entire premise of the series is built upon the idea of commodifying a bunch of rich teenagers' lives so that complete strangers can interfere in their romantic and personal interactions, like they exist purely for the entertainment of Gossip Girl's site visitors.

Similarly, there is no way to skew this current Louis/Blair arc into anything but a forced marriage, in which Louis will at least kiss Blair in public without her consent, if not more. Yes, this show is vapid and frothy and silly in the extreme, but Blair and Serena are also characters that -- wisely or not -- are role models to young women. Maybe most of us don't take "Gossip Girl" seriously, but if there is even one girl out there who thinks that she needs to compromise her integrity or desires to please an overbearing and emotionally manipulative man, the show has done a great disservice to its audience and its actresses. I'm disappointed that the writers couldn't find a more responsible storyline to keep Blair and Chuck apart without needing Blair to both martyr herself and give in to psychological abuse. Rationalize away, but nothing will convince me that this is a worthwhile narrative to pursue.

"Gossip Girl" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

Which would you prefer: Chuck 'buying' Blair from Louis or Blair suffering through a forced marriage? She wouldn't be an equal either way but you’d think the cunning manipulative woman we know would give said leverage to the man who loves her rather than the one who said he doesn't.

The truth is Gossip Girl lost its glamor after season 3. Does anyone remember how good the plot used to be before? The Chuck and Blair scenes were once award worthy in terms of performance (like S02EP08 when they said goodbye). I have no doubt of the capabilities of most of the actors. Hence we're not left with much to blame but the script and direction.

Let's face the truth; this series is not heading anywhere. The plot lines are thrown in and pushed away far too abruptly. Relevant facts are discarded and even Georgina's evil scheming seems like child's play after all the things we've seen on GG. I miss the amazing take-downs and elusive power-plays. I'd say a lot of people recognize the deteriorating quality of the show but they're sticking around out of habit. It’s only a matter of time before GG loses viewers to better shows.

Just watched the last 2 eps and I can honestly say that CHAIR has just lost its charm on me. Their lines, even on the 100th ep, were boring! GG writers, give us something new. I'm now more thrilled with DAIR! My husband is an absolute DAIR fan & I used to argue with him that DAIR are just friends while CHAIR is end game. But seeing how CHAIR romantic scenes in the 100th & 101st eps were completely BLAH, I hope we do see a real DAIR love relationship in the next ep!

bored already~ they dragged chuck-dan-blair's love triangle for too long now.... also, does anybody find louis sudden evilness and blair sudden religiousness just doesn't make sense??

Thank you for number 5. You are so right. As a woman who once admired the Blair character the entire thing makes me very sick to my stomach. If he and his family are holding that much over Blair's head that she will let him put his hands on her in public without her content. There is no saying this prince won't try other things with her when they are alone without her consent. If you understand what I'm saying. Essentially he told her he owns her. IT DISGUSTS ME. I hope something happens very soon to this family to make them drop everything before the "year marriage" is up. The hotel thing happened once OK. But this...you can do better than this Gossip Girl writers and we expect better. I would have loved if Blair ended up alone after a failed wedding as opposed to her being enslaved to this family for a year.

Dair all the way

Agreed that the forced marriage was a little disturbing, although at least it made moderately more sense than Blair's pact with God (although I guess that's now been forgotten, along with her miscarried baby). The obstacles to keeping Chuck and Blair apart just to force Dan and Blair together are getting increasingly ridiculous, sometimes I wonder why I'm even still watching this show...

The show has jumped the shark. There is no point to even watching it anymore.

nice recap but i dont think there is a problem in the writers waliking the "fine line" as you put it. the truth is in reality that is the case so maybe bringing it out in the light would help that young woman who is being treated as a commodity gain some perspective on her predicament. I don't think the wirter is making it seem "okay" for a woman to be treated as a commodity; far from it, I think its just a way of bringing such issues to light because these things really do happen

great recap as always! i agree that this whole "dowry" deal is just creepy and i actually find it incredible that blair's lawyer fathers, harold and cyrus, let her sign the prenuptial agreement. guess i shouldn't expect too much logic from these writers though. it makes me really sad that blair is so often seen as a commodity and i'm still waiting for the writers to break her out of that mold and FINALLY make her into the powerful women she is meant to be.

chuck and blair were beautiful and heart-breaking. i definitely understand blair's reasons for not accepting chuck's offer. i actually somewhat support it. the only problem is the writers seem to have lost all ability to mask their excuses for keeping these two apart as actual believable storylines. that scene was not very well written or directed. it didn't seem as genuine as all the other chuck and blair scenes in the history of the show...

Even though I do understand Blair's reason for not letting Chuck pay her way out of her own mess, I can't help but feel frustrated. I just know it's only an excuse to keep Chuck and Blair apart and while they are apart, Blair will somehow forget that she wants to be this powerful woman who doesn't depend on others to help her out with her issues and do exactly the thing that prevented her from getting back with Chuck. It's not like it didn't happen before (hello "powerful woman" arc that was forgotten as soon as a prince came in town). The writers' intentions are way more transparent than what they think. Poor Chuck has been nothing but great this season and he's only trying to help her because he thinks of HER happiness. And I'm starting to think "What about yours?".

I absolutely love Georgina in all her evil glory and Serena in all her amazing ways. I loved that Serena was worried for her friend and spent the night desperately looking for her and she was also a great sister to Chuck. But above all, I loved that she grew a backbone and told Dan some truths. It was a long time coming. Finally.

Nate is always adorable whether I'm genuinely interested in his storyline or not lol. The rest, I don't care about but I have only one last thing to say. Dan Humphrey, you have some nerve! No wonder I've never liked you.

I agree with you that Gossip Girl walks a fine line and is doing so once again. I always find it somewhat interesting how shows targeting women are so non women friendly. Gossip Girl has struggled for a long to deal with its women issues. Female friendship is portrayed as a joke. Something that fills the time between the most important thing which is getting a boyfriend. Slut shaming occurs almost every episode and actually the way characters treat Serena (esp her friends and family) is a road map on how you should not want to be treated.
Its just the way it goes. I am sure that in the next month there will be at least 10 articles telling Stephanie Savage, Josh Schwartz and Joshua Safran what a great job they are doing. The good thing is that more and more people abandon the show each week.

I love the idea that Dan was the one who sent the tape to GG but I will believe it when I see it. I think even if he did it prove to be the best thing anyone has done. One thing is for sure the Gossip Girl writers have never in the past written Dan facing any blow back or anger for things he has done. They relate to him too much. Dan is that character on a show that no one really likes or cares about but that the writers force down your throat until it becomes a joke.

I like Dan.

I mostly agree with Blair's reasoning for #1, but I felt it was undone by her immediately going to Dan and telling him she needed his help. Why couldn't Blair have just told Chuck she wanted them to find another way to work together to break the Louis marriage pact? Simply because the writers constantly have to find reasons for CB not to be together.

I totally thought #2 was Dan from the beginning! The way he kept trying to pin the blame on Chuck when no one was even talking about it, and after Georgina had already cleared his name? Puh-lease. So transparent.

Dude. What is with the parents on GG and their inability to keep track of their kids? If I had gone to another STATE instead of staying at my college, mt mom would have known in a week, no matter how many phone calls I made home.

Completely agree with #5. The story lines they come up with constantly manage to be both outrageous in their lack of believability and completely offensive when it comes to their implications about women. You can usually tell the show is run by men.

Honestly, it did annoy me as a Chuck and Blair fan and while I get why she did it, it's just a repeated story line from last year. Anyone remember the "powerful woman" arc and how well that turned out? It's just excuse number 333445556645666 for them to push Chuck and Blair apart.

I loved Serena this episode way more than I thought I would. She's stepping up this year and really calling things as they are. What a great friend she's become without Blair ever appreciating or noticing.

I did'n t care for the Blair and Dan stuff it always seems forced and all he's doing is manipulating her left and right as a friend. He din't tell her he wrote the vows until it was too late and now he sent the video at the wedding where he pointed a finger at Chuck and Blair got pissed at Chuck. Dan's just annoying.
03:15 PM on 02/07/2012
Wow I totally agree. To me, the "powerful woman" story line didn't fit very well and the writers debunked it like 10 episodes later when she got with Louis and basically being a "princess" is the same difference as being a powerful businessman's wife. So her need to not be "Hillary in the white house" but "Hillary Secretary of state" totally wouldn't happen for Blair then. Because isn't being a princess the same thing as first lady?

So the excuses to not be together don't make sense. Personally the harder things between them they forgave, but the silly reasons to not be together still remain. The writers think they can't be together because it would make the show boring, but it's becoming really boring to watch them chase each other around. The Dan/Blair thing is totally contrived. Does a friendship really lead to sexual passion? Because I don't think what Chuck/Blair have can't be reproduced with Dan/Blair in the least bit.
