GET UPDATES FROM Laura Thomas
Funky and fierce, Laura Thomas is a New York singer/songwriter with a sound like no one else in the industry. Her music combines the power of rock and funk with probing lyrics and emotional songwritng. Textured by a fiery violin and a multi-layered guitar, the Laura Thomas Band is led by Laura’s powerhouse vocals. Over the last few years, since her boyfriend Paul Rieckhoff served for a year in Iraq as a member of the National Guard, Laura’s music has become increasingly focused on political and social issues. She is committed to the notion that social change can be effected through artistic expression. She writes songs about the Iraq War, social apathy, the oppression of women and other minorities, the importance of gay rights, and the trials and tribulations of relationships, among other things.

The Village Voice recently praised Laura for her "thick-skinned song-poems in jazzoid rhythms." The Washington Post said that "Her voice is capable of tracing melodies as sinuous as the Rock Creek Parkway, and she has a soft spot for writing tender, compassionate or introspective ballads that help set her apart from the rant'n'roll crowd."

In 2002 Laura co-produced her first album, "On My Sleeve," followed in 2004 by her second CD, "Slow." In September 2005, the Laura Thomas Band released its first full-band album, "Step to the Wire," featuring the song "Blind Trinity," a political allegory about the Bush administration's foreign policy.

Whether singing acoustically with just her guitar and her microphone, or with the entire LTB, Laura's biting, crafty lyrics, massive voice, and passionate, proficient band make for an emotionally charged show.

Hillary and Celine

Hillary Clinton is a woman of stupendous intellect. She's a political leviathan. But is she a woman of taste?

For her "campaign song," a tune that presumably defines the tone and intent of the campaign, Hillary Clinton chose Celine Dion's "You and I." This is the song that's...

You're Worth More Than Your Ass

Few songs from the 21st century have been as offensive to me as "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas. Yes, it was catchy, and yes, the beat stayed in my head for days. But, come on, what self-respecting woman wouldn't be infuriated by this:

"I drive these brothers...

Dixie Chicks: THANK YOU

Last month, the Dixie Chicks played to a massive, but not sold-out, crowd at Madison Square Garden. The audience's excitement and pride were nearly palpable. After all, these were New Yorkers - and unlike a lot of Red State Americans, we were proud of lead singer Natalie Maines for standing...

Girls Rock Hard

When I was growing up in Alabama, the notion of a 10-year-old girl drummer in an all-girl rock band seemed as plausible as Lyndon Larouche getting elected President of the United States. Back then, girls just didn't rock hard (with a very few notable exceptions).

Since childhood, I've dreamed...
