Groups Sue FDA for Putting Pigs Before People

Posted: 05/26/11 01:35 PM ET

Force-feeding prescription drugs to healthy people, just to make them grow faster, would be considered ludicrous by any doctor. Possibly even criminal.

That's why the Natural Resources Defense Council, Union of Concerned Scientists, and other health and science groups filed suit yesterday against the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for allowing factory farms to do just that -- waste our precious antibiotics on healthy livestock, just to help them grow fatter faster.

Here's the disturbing truth. Approximately 70% of all antibiotics in our country are being squandered on healthy cows, pigs and chickens for unnecessary (and unnatural!) reasons like growth promotion, creating vast amounts of drug-resistant superbugs that put our children and families at risk.

For decades, antibiotics have saved us from diseases that were once a death sentence, ranging from bacterial meningitis to tuberculosis and pneumonia. But now, multi-drug resistant infections are on the rise, while the development of costly new antibiotics has slowed to a snail's pace. Around the world, leading health organizations are warning that we're on the verge of a global public health crisis.

And industrial agriculture keeps pouring gasoline on the fire, by regularly feeding important human antibiotics to our food animals at doses too low to treat disease -- but perfect for breeding drug-resistant, dangerous bacteria.

The problem is so big and so bad that even our government officials openly admit that squandering antibiotics on livestock is a major threat to public health -- and that we will not be able to win the battle against drug-resistance unless we end the practice.

Take it straight from the National Academy of Sciences:

A decrease in the inappropriate use of antimicrobials in human medicine alone is not enough. Substantial efforts must be made to decrease inappropriate overuse of antimicrobials in animals and agriculture as well.

Translation? The insanity has to stop now.

And that's where FDA comes into the picture.

Even though FDA has known for decades that giving human antibiotics to healthy animals can breed monster bacteria that threaten human health, and even though the agency has a legal obligation to take action -- FDA has done nothing.

Thank goodness they're not getting away with it. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), together with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), and Public Citizen, filed suit on Wednesday to make the FDA get off the sidelines and into the game, doing its job to protect the health of our families.

The coalition lawsuit will force the FDA to pull its head out of the sand and address this serious threat to public health now.

It will not only make the agency withdraw approval for giving penicillins and tetracyclines to healthy animals, but will also make FDA reevaluate whether it is safe to keep feeding ANY antibiotics important for human medicine to healthy animals.

The lawsuit couldn't come at a more urgent time. Currently, while your family doctor carefully weighs the options before prescribing an antibiotic to your sick child, industrial farms are doling out the same antibiotics to animals like candy, undermining their ability to protect our health.

Maybe factory farms think they can stuff 25 million pounds of antibiotics into animal feed and water, and we won't notice. Or maybe they think we won't care.

But they're wrong.

We've noticed and we're not staying quiet.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by PEW Charitable Trusts earlier this month, 80 percent of moms are concerned about antibiotics being used in meat production.

Why? Because, even if big agriculture doesn't get it, parents know the value of a working antibiotic. We've stayed up all night with sick kids, worrying about whether a fever will break or when a doctor's prescription will kick in. We know firsthand that ending this dangerous practice is about common sense, preparedness, and putting the health of people first.

There are no more excuses for delay. The science is in. More than 300 of the world's leading health and consumer organizations have already come forward to demand that this practice come to an end. Countries around the globe -- including all 27 member states of the European Union -- have already banned the use of important human antibiotics for growth promotion.

And it's time for us to do the same here at home.

Learn more about this life threatening issue from NRDC. Then sign a petition (http://www.nrdc.org/media/2011/110525.asp) to support legislation that would help stop the outrageous misuse of these precious medicines on factory farms.

Sign the petition, then act with your food dollars and purchase direct from a farmer who shares your views (whatever they may be), by finding one on Home Grown Cow. Nothing is more powerful than consumer spending and if consumers show they want meat from small, conscientious farmers, then in time, the shift will happen.

The new tactic is raising the anxiety level — and risks — for corporate honchos at drug companies, medical device manufacturers, nursing home chains and other major health care enterprises that deal with Medicare and Medicaid.

"When you look at the history of health care enforcement, we've seen a number of Fortune 500 companies that have been caught not once, not twice, but sometimes three times violating the trust of the American people, submitting false claims, paying kickbacks to doctors, marketing drugs which have not been tested for safety and efficacy," said Lewis Morris, chief counsel for the inspector general of the Health and Human Services Department."

Check out the movie Food Inc. My wife and I watched it the other night, horrified us, now we wonder about anything we eat, even though we already eat mostly organic and no meat. The way Monsanto and the few other major conglomerates are taking over the entire food production business, destroying small farmers, with subsidies from our tax dollars, makes me want to throw up.

The entire matter would be settled were people to cease eating anything that had a face.

I'm not sure how drugging pigs in CAFOs while we enslave, abuse and slaughter them is putting them before people.

Well, here is just another way we have been supporting big pharma. Fat pigs are nothing compared to the abuse and fate of the foals of the big pharma mares in Canada. They breed horses for their urine during pregnancy, mainly for women's medications here in the US. So at about two months of age, the babies are taken and sent to slaughter and they re-breed the mares, again, for their urine. Yes ladies, we have been taking meds made from horse urine and the company disposes of the foals. All quite horrifying.

The FDA could give a crap. They are as corrupt at the evil companies they protect. Watch: Nothing will happen as long as the lobbyists block every positive move these organizations make. Money rules everything.

Monsanto has a firm grip on the reins of both FDA and USDA thanks to our CEO in Chief. He even made a justice appointment that totally favors Monsanto.

This onslaught of corporate interests into government needs to be halted.

Good for them it should be illegal.

Boycott Land of Lakes!

By now you’ve heard how President Obama and his Monsanto Administration have plowed through approvals of three more genetically engineered products, including GE alfalfa. Well, here’s something else you should know:

To produce its Round-Up Ready Alfalfa seeds, Monsanto partnered with a company called Forage Genetics International, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Land O’Lakes dairy co-op. That’s right, Land O’Lakes stands to make a fortune from polluting our food supply with untested and unlabeled GMOs.

I only eat meat from animals I've personally killed. And since I don't kill animals, I don't eat meat. Thus, I don't participate in the vast system of waste, pollution and suffering that characterizes our grotesque factory farming system. Few things are more important than what we put into our bodies, and on a day-to-day basis, there are few choices I can make that have a greater positive impact on my health and the health of the planet than avoiding meat and dairy.

Maybe they should give them anti depressant meds to help them live calmer in the hell they live in.
( I get very angry about the cruel treatment of animals and what we feed our children).... And why is it legal for a farmer to do this? To even buy the drugs in the first place?
Pay attention to what you put on your dinner plate.

I really think lobotomies at birth for all livestock animals (particularly pigs) would be a good option. Unfortunately that would take away from the bottom line. :(

I have been saying for years that the stuff they have been pumping into our food has a direct link to the rise in diabetes and obesity..the hormones and antibiotics are wreking havoc on people's bodies....We are all different in the way our bodies work, ie digest food...look at the rise in IBS...why? because although the FDA claims these are "safe" amounts, think about what these chemicals do when taken day after day, year after year...somethig has to give....I am not saying all obesity is linked to it, I hope we are all mature enough to know the difference, but more and more people are getting sick from all the crap they put in food. PS...there is NO shortage of cows, pigs, or chickens....never will be....we also don't need vegtables that have a shelf life of 10 years....it is not possible for everyone to grow their own food, so it is up to us to DEMAND that our government stop poisoning us and our animals....

I totally agree with you and I'll add one further. Why have our immune systems broken down? More allergy sufferers. Allergy's are an immune response, and who knows what all the hormones are doing to our bodies. More people have chronic disease than ever, more have heart problems, not all due to obesity. There are enough concerns to where I think the FDA needs to do more study.
