Laverne H. Bardy
GET UPDATES FROM Laverne H. Bardy
Laverne H. Bardy spent several years writing press releases for fund raisers and organizations, for the West Essex Tribune. Assignments for Northern Horizons and Montague magazines had her exercising her journalism skills, but it didn’t take long for her to realize that straight reporting did not allow for her need to write creatively, and with humor. In 1999 she was offered an opportunity to have her own column, “Laverne’s View,” in a regional New Jersey newspaper, 50 Plus Monthly. Her humorous, often irreverent, slant on life in general, and aging in particular, drew a large readership.

She has been syndicated with Senior Wire News Service since 2004. Her column is read in newspapers internationally. She has written for numerous magazines and e-zines, and her work is included in many anthologies, and a college text book. Bardy has been interviewed by Carole Marks on her national radio talk show, A Touch of Gray, by Brian Feinblum for Book Marketing Buzz Blog, and twice for Bottom Line Retirement. Her book, How The (Bleep) Did I Get This Old? was released in January, 2012, and is a compilation of the best of those columns. Bardy attended University of Miami and Upsala College.

Are women better off without wearing bras? This topic on nighttime news, squeezed between Korea's nuclear threats and the start of baseball season, has women voicing some strong opinions. I, of course, am one of those women. My first reaction is a resounding, "OMG! YES! YES! YES!"

Jean-Denis Rouillon,...

My ex-boyfriend, Larry, always criticized my driving. "You drive too fast," he complained. "Keep both hands on the wheel." "Didn't you see that stop sign?" Blah, blah, blah.

It's not as though his attacks were justified. The last accident I had wasn't even my fault. I'd been drooling over...

I was sitting with a group of old girlfriends; old being the operative word. We meet at each other's home, with our husbands, four times a year. Weather permitting, the men play golf while the women stay behind, wolfing down chips, nuts, cheese and crackers and kvetching about how impossible...

We were in Puerto Vallerta, seated outdoors at a romantic seaside restaurant. A waiter walked over and asked for our drink order.

I looked up at him and had to catch my breath. He was about 28, with jet black hair, deeply tanned skin, pearly white teeth and a...

Anyone who knows me will tell you that my house is immaculate. I'm a neat freak. Even though I am a collector of many things, and my shelves, countertops and walls are covered with photos and collectibles, nothing is disorganized. Everything has its place. Without order and serenity around me,...

I had wanted to take horseback riding lessons for a long while, however well meaning friends cautioned, "You're in your 60s, for heaven sake. You could break your bones," as if broken bones would be less convenient or less painful at a younger age.

I'd been on a horse...

Dancing Through the Pain

I opened an email that included a video of a 94-year-old woman dancing the two-step. The background music was Gene Kelly's classic "Singing in the Rain."

Before executing her amazing agility, she demonstrated what a 94-year-old is expected to look like by entering the dance floor slowly, pushing a walker....

Who Says Bigger Is Better?

Our house was not large enough for both of us. We had run out of storage areas. Closets were overflowing. Shelves were buckling from excessive weight placed on them. Halls and stairways were cluttered, and space under couches and beds no longer existed.

When Mighty Marc moved in with...

I never cease to be amazed by some of the things I read, hear and observe. Television commercials in particular cause me to scratch my head and ponder. It boggles my mind to realize that before these words and images are released to the public they're actually approved by an...

My 12 Days of Christmas

Marc visited his family in San Diego for the Christmas holidays. I was invited to accompany him but opted for twelve glorious days of soul-searching, stress-free solitude and serenity. I love my husband, but I'm a person who desperately needs long periods of being alone. Married life doesn't often afford...

The Agony of Defeet

I recently learned about a craze that's been added to the growing list of body mutilations for beautification. Doctors whittle away and add to all parts of our bodies. They stick needles into our foreheads, jaw lines, lips and breasts. Tattoo artists shoot permanent ink under our skin. We have...

A while back, I was watching television and caught an old taped show of Bill Moyers interviewing Joseph Campbell about Campbell's book, The Power of Myth. I suddenly realized that Campbell was talking about me. It appears that what I've been doing most of my life is struggling to "follow...

I hate exercise! There is nothing about being hot, exhausted and in pain that appeals to me. The most active thing I did this week was struggle to rip open a bag of Oreos.

Every day, the media reminds me that I am out of sync with the rest of...

Yesterday I did something I haven't done in years. I pigged out. I stuffed a whole box of cookies down my throat because I couldn't stop.

If you have no understanding of pigging out, then nothing I say here will be of interest to you. Either your eating habits are...

I have no idea how I injured my back, but the results landed me flat out in knife-twisting agony for nearly three weeks. I've had back problems before but nothing compared to this torture -- not even back in 1985, when the medics came, hoisted me off my bedroom floor...

As a result of modern medicine, medical advances and public education, the average human life span has risen from age 45 in 1840 to 85 in 2000. Bruce J. Klein, director at the Immortality Institute in Alabama, questions whether we will find a cure for aging altogether, or if the...

There are those who insist that men and women are alike, but I've lived long enough to know with certainty that they are not.

To start, men and women argue differently. If a woman is angry at her girlfriend she chooses her words carefully, and bends over backwards to avoid...

Who hasn't wondered what happens to us after we die? I used to be a nay sayer, a pessimist, a doubting Thomas, certain that once we leave this world everything ends: no more parties, no more sushi, Hershey bars or shopping for shoes. Definitely no more verbal communication with people...

We bought a beautiful new car, and it's for me. It's a gas guzzler but that's okay, it's red. I don't know the difference between a Lincoln and a Mini Cooper, but I do love red cars. The salesman at the car dealership tried to foist a black one on...
