When the only reliable news is Jon Stewart, there is a problem, don't you think... None of them are doing the job, they are just as bad as the political parties all they do if fight against each other instead of getting the real stories out lately.

CNN has a chance now to step back and stop the bs and be the one REAL news channel that it set out to be. It can be the american BBC. A channel thats purely about news, and no commentary. Now that Larry King is retiring, I say don't replace him and let it be all news, all the time, no opinions. Leave that to msnbc and fnc.

TV News is dying! What news there is--is controlled by the Wire Pullers. At least five or six
subjects are taboo in our society. For example, they are the power of the Military-Industrial

Orwell's one big mistake was in assuming that the truth had to be stifled and supressed in order that his dystopian Big Brother regime continue to hold absolute power. That's not the case at all; it simply has to be de-prioritized, ignored, or rendered irrelevant in the public's mind midst the cacophonous avalanche of half truths, trivia, misinformation, distortion, outright lies and trite banalities of the modern, more glib "newspeak". One "Mel Gibson rant" can do more to neutralize public indignation at, say, BP's recklessness or the death of American troops in some war for profit, than a 1000 memory holes.

Ain't that the truth! Same $hit, different talking heads every hour on every channel of cable news just about. The redundancy is maddening! That's why my TV remains on mute most of the day. If I see something that might be interesting, I'll turn it on for a second to test the waters and then right back to mute.

opinion? perhaps... but at least they do REPORT news & relevant info that the mainstream seems to ALWAYS omit although Couric did do a report on the recent polls not too favorable for the administration... but as far as being favorable to the republican party, being a conservative legal immigrant, i don't see it as most in the party has left the core principles & values that the party use to be identified with... i'm not into party politics but into sound policies... unfortunately, the MSM has fallen into the previous camp all the way to the grave... Good Riddance!!!

The most frightening aspect of national TV news is that it's obviously orchestrated so that all the networks report virtually identical stories in virtually the same way. The news items almost invariably are blandly supportive of the status quo and the establishment. Today there was a good example: The biggest story on the BBC website was about an Iranian scientist who sought refuge Monday in the Pakistan embassy in D.C. claiming he had been kidnapped by U.S. agents. But, oddly none of the major networks mentioned the story AT ALL except for a small notice in the CNN crawl. You can't tell me that the news execs at those different networks all made a strange decision to ignore the story because they honestly thought it lacked news value.
But that's par for the course and it gets more frightening every day. Controversial information is being slowly but steadily shut off. And when controversial issues are presented, mostly in the evening gabfest shows, they are presented in a token way, with bland, predictable opinions being voiced. As usual, there's very little information presented, especially if that info would present the U.S. establishment in a bad light. (How many times can the networks give glowing profiles of U.S. forces instead of accurately describing the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan? An infinite number, apparently.)
Sometimes I feel like I'm living in Moscow circa 1952 -- or maybe Berlin in 1938 would be more accurate.

I have not had the TV local news or cable news on for years (exception PBS/BBC). A few months ago I gave up my local newspaper subscription for the same reason. Local articles were very slanted to the right, opinion page was all right-wing: same opinion "writers" that would appear on Fox News Cable TV, with the exact same drivel (talking points) at exactly the same time. I let the paper know why I was canceling. Never heard back.
Don't care to hear that media outlets are struggling, when they voluntarily choose to support their financial underwriters vested interests, instead of their viewers' best interests.

TV news in the US has been reduced to a tabloid level of "intelligence" (sic) in order to reduce the US citizenry to tabloid mongoloids, who only exist now to be consumers, not citizens. News was cancelled, democracy was cancelled.

I love this post. I love the idea behind it. And I agree with you. Which means...wait a minute. I'm commenting about a post that says comments from the general public are pretty much useless and don't add anything to the story. Yet, how can I be offended when it's true? The levels of meta-irony here are pretty great.

It is simply a reality TV show anymore like American Idol. We have become such an instant gratification society with limited attention spans that real understanding of issues isn't even considered. Instead they want to couch everything in purely political terms so instead of actual news we end up with personal opinion. And since it's on TV it is often taken as fact.

Fanned and rightly so.
