Ian Welsh: Economics of a Flu Pandemic
While I think it's unlikely that the current outbreak of swine flu will reach pandemic proportions, it's worth looking at what a pandemic would be like in economic terms, and what individuals can do to prepare for one.

Swine Flu. Or should that be Swinefeld - a disease about nothing? The question is, how long will it run?
Every flu virus you've ever had was a different mutation from the last one. It just wasn't as OMG Scary! because they didn't give it a hyped-up, media-friendly name and then cry about it on every news network.
I wonder how many people are now living with needless fear due to the irresponsible media and their own ignorance.
(And no, I'm not saying to not take precautions, like washing your hands--but if you're only worried about washing your hands when you hear the word "pandemic", then you have bigger problems than some sort of barnyard sickness could ever cause.)
What is WRONG with you people??? You're supposed to be terrified!!! C'mon, let's get with the program already. How can we control you if you're not scared s***less?
Yours truly,
The gubment

I like your new medium. Excellent work. Thanks for making me laugh so hard I cried a bit (especially the eyeball camera one).
:-)
Funny! I'm still going to wash my hands compulsively throughout the day, of course, but funny!
I don't like guacamole. But I did like that video
The reason SARS didn't turn into a horrific pandemic is BECAUSE we all took those precautions.

Wash your hands, keep your sick kids at home, be sensible. We can nip this one in the bud, too. (BTW, my house officially has influenza as of this morning. We are not panicking, but we do wish we'd stocked up on more throat lozenges. Keep the sick folks comfortable and at home. Consult with your doctor via phone, DON'T take someone with influenza to a clinic or ER unless absolutely necessary.
nice. thanks.
"stoic cow disease"
"110 people die from car crashes in the U.S. every day...
...as compared to only 3 per day from Carlos Mencia."
(Lee Camp, I think I love you.)
Thanks!

People are numb and tragically do NOT trust the federal health agencies including the CDC
See my blog on why the CDC needs a complete overhaul- http://med

i had flashbacks to SARS and the bird flu over the last few days, it's comical.
I just sneezed bacon bits. Should I see a doctor?
Or should I spend last time at the all-you-can-eat shrimp and salad bar at SIZZLER.
After SARS, avian flu, West Nile virus, ebola, mad cow disease, killer bees, and asian long-horned beetles (maybe that was just for trees, I can't remember) I'm just not worried. Maybe if news organizations stopped crying "wolf" - or "pandemic" - every time a new disease popped up I might actually care.
TWEET this! People gotta THINK before they panic!
Bless you Lee Camp. Thanks!
