Lee Daniels spent the decade from 1996 to 2005 as director of publications for the National Urban League, as editor of their policy journal, The State of Black America, and their magazine, Opportunity Journal. For three years before that, he was a Fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and a Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Center for Afro-American Studies at Harvard. For the two decades before that, he was a journalist for the New York Times and the Washington Post and WGBH-TV (Boston). Daniels graduated from Harvard College in 1971.
