Division of labor, when it comes to money, scares me. It's not safe, and I believe the Madoff scandal is a huge wake-up call. Consider the spouse's defense: "I'm an ostrich. I didn't know."
If you've ever wondered how Ruth Madoff moves on with her life, here's an insight from Bernadette Noe, a woman who's been there: "I've opened another chapter, which hasn't been all bad."
Bernie Madoff got 150 years in prison, though he told investors it was 175 years... and they each told two investors it was 190 years... and so on and so on and so on...
Could it be that Madoff's willing to go to jail for the rest of his life because... he's hidden the dough? How much would you need to be paid to spend your old age in a cell?
When hiring a financial adviser, there are three distinct pieces: the advice, the trading and the custodianship. In Madoff's case, he owned all three pieces, but in most firms, at least one of the pieces is handled separately.
The streets are littered with evil predators searching for their next victims. It's best we know that and not fall into a false sense of security because, "Phew! Bernie's in jail!"
Mrs. Madoff said she was kept "totally in the dark" about her husband's activities because he used a clever cover story: "He told me he was hiking the Appalachian Trail."
With courts unwilling to interpret the law as affording some defense for charities, there have been efforts to persuade legislators to amend existing laws to provide such a defense. But little has come of these efforts.
The 150-year sentence is headline grabbing, but what should surprise us is not that Madoff got such a long sentence, but that other corporate criminals escape with no criminal prosecution at all.
Judge Denny Chin imposed the maximum sentence of 150 years on Bernard L. Madoff, the mastermind of the greatest financial fraud in history, but it is not enough.
Bernie Madoff was a sexist, egomaniacal, short-tempered control freak -- yet everybody loved him. That is according to his secretary of more than 20 years, Eleanor Squillari.

Wonderful video!
Go, Al!!
..half a year, sorry.
And it's about time!
But it's a lousy precedent... Minnesota ought to sue Coleman for depriving them of half their Senate representation for half a term.
