Dogs On Death Row

Posted: 12/07/11 01:36 PM ET

Over Thanksgiving weekend last month, the Carson Animal Shelter, in South Los Angeles County, killed 18 pit bulls while the facility was closed to the public and to potential adopters. The nineteenth would have been Ona, a 5 month-old pit mix with the pointy ears of a German Shepherd. Ona was lucky: she was pulled by a rescuer the day before the long weekend. The puppy had found a new home, thanks to a Facebook page and website called "SwayLove," created by Josh Liddy.

Several times a week, Josh takes a short drive from his house to the county-run animal shelter and spends some time with the imprisoned dogs. The majority of them will end up receiving a lethal injection -- especially the pit bulls, who, saddled with an unfair and stereotyped reputation for inherently aggressive behavior, are less trusted by families looking to adopt a companion. Most pits who end up at the Carson shelter are killed within a week. Sometimes it's a dozen or more at a time. That's just one shelter in one city in America.

At the shelter, Josh takes pictures of every pit bull. When he gets home, he transfers the portraits to his computer, affixes adoption information to each picture, and uploads them to the Swaylove Facebook page. This way, Facebook users who are moved to share these sad and beautiful images with their friends also share the information a potential adopter would need to save each dog. This is how Josh uses his creative skills, coupled with online social networks, to save lives.

2011-12-06-Onaunseen.jpg

This work is Josh's life, and his purpose. It's his daily act of tribute to his own former companion, Sway, a rambunctious and loyal pit bull who Josh lost to an auto immune disease.

Christopher Sprinkle and I created this short video about Josh's work as the first episode of a new online series from Dog Park Media about animals and the people who love them, called 'Rescued.'

While we were at the pound, shooting the footage you see here, I met Ona. It was love at first sight. I wasn't planning to adopt a dog anytime soon, but it's hard to resist these amazing animals in such tragic and desperate circumstances. So after getting home and talking it over with my girlfriend, I put a note up on the Swaylove Facebook page. I heard back almost immediately from a rescuer, who took Ona off of death row that same day and arranged for me to pick her up and bring her to her new forever home. One more life saved because of Josh.

Ona is one of the lucky few at the Carson Animal Shelter, but because of Josh and his advocacy for pits at his local pound, it's a few more than it would have been. That makes every minute Josh spends at the shelter worthwhile. Sway's spirit lives on in Ona, and in every dog rescued because of Josh's work.

If you know of any amazing folks like Josh who rescue animals that you feel should be featured in RESCUED, contact Dog Park at info@dogparkmedia.com.

Josh's work is inspiring. More needs to be done to support local rescue groups and those working to provide FREE AND LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER. In Los Angeles, Downtown Dog Rescue is ahead of their time in offering mobile spay/neuter clinics. In Orange County, the OCSPCA offers FREE spay/neuter vouchers for ANY pit bull who resides in OC. We need to stop the breeders and get the pit bull population under control. More also needs to be done to educate people about the true nature of pit bulls; discrimination by landlords and insurance companies plays greatly into euthanasia rates at shelters. There is mass murder of pit bulls at shelters across the country; the first step to stopping this is to provide FREE AND LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER!

Josh, I sure wish I knew someone like you. We had two tiny little puppies dumped in our yard today. We cannot keep them. We have to many dogs now. The Humane Society, when we had one told my husband to take another dog and dump it somewhere. We will find a home for them. Wish we could keep them but we are not the Humane Society. Take Care.

Thanks all for the comments. Unfortunately the day this story went live was the same day I was flying back home to Ohio, so I wasn't able to partake in the reading and responding to comments... I look forward to going through them now. Thanks again, for anyone's support. Thanks as well to Dog Park Media for giving me an opportunity to display the dogs in this manner...

Josh Liddy, Bless you for all you for these Pit Bulls. My Daughter had two. The first one was so badly abused he was scared of everything and eveyone. He finally came around to me and was always giving me kisses. Our daughters neighbors claimed he bit them and they hauled him off. I said if he bit them how could they pick him up? and the other one was a girl. But she got hauled off to. They are a misunderstood breed. Thank You for caring and all that you do.
03:47 PM on 12/09/2011
They hauled them both off?? What happened after that? They can't just take your dog, even if it did bite someone. And what about the other one? There is always circumstances involved, and steps you can take...

Why kill perfectly good dogs? Because of irresponsible owners innocent dogs must die!! Please reach out and educate pit bull owners and always report animal abuse and neglect. Support no kill shelters by DONATING $$!! If you can adopt a pit bull for a lifetime of love!!

Sad state of affairs the pit bull name has attached to it. But it's not the dog, it's the owners. I would if I could but I can't; my days of dog walking are over. But will gladly post about Sway!

Both my current dog and her predicessor (we were together 15 years) picked me out at the pound. It is heartbreaking that people do not spay/neuter pets.

Every dog needs a home, every home needs a dog.

Every dog needs a home indeed, every home would do better with a dog as part of the family, true.

I cannot imagine living my life without my APBT she is such a part of my families life. We've been parents to several thru the years going on about 29 years. They are awesome dogs. They are not for everyone that is true. That's the only breed I've had in that amount of time.
Back years ago I use to do some breeding but when the shelters started filling up with them I stopped. There are too many sad cases that already need homes. Thanks again Josh...the world needs a few more great people just like you ;)

I was heartbroken when my last dog died. A Wiccan friend told me that I had lost my familiar.

I decided that I would not get another dog until I had allowed myself to grieve.

Three weeks later I brought a puppy home. I wasn't done grieving, but it turned out that my house was not a home without a dog.

There may well be gentle pitbulls in this world, but they still retain the ability to cause immense harm to people if that gentle demeanor ever changes.

With so many other gentle and affectionate breeds to choose from, why anyone would consider this one is beyond me, or perhaps the answer is obvious...........

All dogs are innocent. Who breeds pit bulls? Who allows them to proliferate? The innocent are dumped on death row to pay for the crimes of the guilty.

Many different breeds of dogs have the ability to cause immense harm but they are not sterotyped the same way. If fact, any medium to large-sized dog can cause immense harm under the right circumstances. I own a rescued pit bull and he is a fantastic dog. With the proper socializing he now goes to dog parks and plays with other dogs. The breed is actually not by nature agressive toward humans. If fact, that trait was purposefully bred out of them because the handlers had to be in the pit with the dogs when they fought them. Yes, it is better for any of the gladiator breeds to be owned by an experienced dog person but the fact so many of these great dogs are put to death through no cause of their own is a tragic misunderstanding of the breed.

As a dog trainer in Denver, Colorado, I've trained hundreds of dogs, many of them pit bulls. I've also been bitten by several dogs -- none of them pit bulls. The truth is this:

A pit bull, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DOG, is dangerous if it is not SOCIALIZED, TRAINED, and MANAGED.

And just like any other dog, if it is SOCIALIZED, TRAINED and MANAGED, it can be a stable, happy family pet.

Denver pit bulls definitely get a bad rap. But the lion's share of the problem is with the owner, not the dog. Instead of demonizing the breed, we need to take a serious look at neglectful owners and consider how THEY can be dealt with.

They are a product of man. We have used and abused this breed for years. Just in the last several years there have been some that have wanted to make them bigger and heavier and in doing that (in my opinion) they have changed the personality of the APBT. Plus the fact that there have been some people that do not have enough sense to own a tiny breed of dog much less an APBT. This breed was perfect to start with. Whatever they are they are what we've made them!

Everyday everyday the killing continues. Animals are usually killed on Fridays and before holidays where no one will have to come in and take care of them. If people only knew what goes on in the majority of animal controls. Someone complains to me about the numbers of killings, I ask them what are they dong to help stop it? I get, I could never go in one of those places. Therein lies the problem and solution. People spend one day at their local AC killings would go down. Out of sight out of mind.
THESE ANIMALS KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. THEY CAN SMELL THE EUTHANSIAS. THE INJECTION HAS A DISTINCT SMELL. They just shake. Animals can smell death. I am sick and tired of the killing, breeding, the uneducated, ignorance, and total disregard for cruelty and suffering. I guess if there was a video of a day at any AC many people might think before they breed, not spay/neuter, or buy from pet stores and "accidental" litters from backyard breeders. People need to understand there is a whole underground of cruelty due to overpopulation which includes dog auctions, research labs, vivisection, class b dealers, flea markets, selling in parking lots, and puppy millers. Unless you have seen any of this one has no clue how sickening and angry rescuers and shelter workers get.
05:04 AM on 12/09/2011
There absolutely is an underground of cruelty in all of the forms that you rattled off, it's disheartening and more light needs shined on each example that you listed...
09:45 AM on 12/08/2011
I understand that not all pitbulls are vicious and mean animals, but like any living being, including humans, sometimes we snap and act irrationally....if my cat bit me, i'd have a small breaking of the skin...if a pitbull bit me, i'd lose a chunk of my arm if im lucky lol....Much power to anyone with the heart to raise one, I just personally am too terrified to have a pet that can destroy me if it so got the urge
05:02 AM on 12/09/2011
Then you must feel the same way about all "large" dogs? Why does your irrationality focus on only 1 type of dog?
10:36 AM on 12/09/2011
Oh no you are absolutely right, just from my knowledge I thought pitbulls had the greatest bite strength of dogs but I could be wrong, but yes any dog or animal (no tigers or snakes) that can kill me is not a pet for me! Again I'm not against the ownership of them in general, just not for me

Pitbulls are targeted because of the imagined reputation they earned as very aggressive animals. They were not made that way but greedy human beings bred them and turned them into such. Most animal shelters are not serious in their intention to protect animals. They are concentration camps for dogs. People who run these shelters are responsible for permitting so many dogs to be killed. If a systematic program of female sterilization is conducted there will be a vast reduction of these animals and shelters need not spend so much money on destroying them. Also, American families must be encouraged to keep animals from shelters as far as possible.
05:00 AM on 12/09/2011
Most shelters are indeed concentration camps for dogs, especially pitties...

No - its people who have taught them to be aggressive. It's not their fault. The basic nature of dogs are the same. It's the way you handle them.

Because of their strength Pit Bulls were targeted by the criminals to fight. They chose aggressive dogs to mate with other aggressive dogs. Pit bulls are extraordinarily people oriented which is why these criminals can do what they do to these dogs and not be killed by them They breed dogs to be dog aggressive and trained that way. Michael Vic's dogs are a good example - those that were rescued are now pets and some are therapy dogs. The dogs rescued from a NJ junk yard have been rehabilitated. They are not for the novice as most people really do not understand dogs. Breeding should be left to the COE (Code of ethics breeders) AKC is nothing but a registry - it guarantees nothing. Do your research when looking for a companion.

We took our neighbor to court because of the three dogs they had. They had 2 large St.Bernards and one pit/boxer mix. They didn't take care of the dogs, it was hot out and there was no food or water. The pit/boxer was tied to a tree with some kind of chain. The St. Bernards need grooming, they were hungry and dirty and left a welcome card on our front lawn. They have bit me several times.Animal control told them to get rid of the dogs with then 6 mo or they would. He had to pay court cost and the whole nine yards. It is terrible these dogs will have to be put down. The neighbour told me that they kill chickens and ducks which belong to the people across the street. He disqusting person and could care less about his animals or the people around him.
04:57 AM on 12/09/2011
Some people suck. Why will the dogs have to be put down? Maybe they will be saved or rescued, let's hope for that anyways...
