Top 5 Sports Stories

I guess the odds makers aren't Tebowing. Denver goes into New England a 13 1/2 point underdog tomorrow night. I don't bet or advocate sports betting, but Tim Tebow has proved just about everyone wrong.

TGIF everyone here's my Top 5 for January 13, 2012 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.

1. Quick Hits

  • The NFL playoffs resume this weekend with four more games.
  • Baseball owners extend Commissioner Bud Selig's contract through the 2014 season at which time he'll be 80 years old.
  • Orlando's Dwight Howard sets an NBA record by attempting 39 free throws in their win against Golden State. (He made 21.) Wilt Chamberlain's record of 34 attempts lasted 50 years.

2. You Betcha

I guess the odds makers aren't Tebowing. Denver goes into New England a 13 1/2 point underdog tomorrow night. I don't bet or advocate sports betting, but Tim Tebow has proved just about everyone wrong. Do you really think he'll lose by two touchdowns? By the way, in ESPN's monthly poll of America's favorite active pro athlete, Tim Tebow finished #1. Then again Peyton Manning finished 4th and he's not exactly "active."

3. Heads Up!

For all of you who think sportscasting is a cushy job, check out the soccer pre-game show. Now that's a header!

4. Friday eMailbag

With Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens being eligible for the Hall of Fame next year, B.J. writes, "The questions about Bonds and Clemens might never have happened if the commissioner would have had a pair of 'baseballs.'"

In response to the Top 5 subscriber who unsubscribed because of my stance on performance enhancing drugs, E.L. writes, "Unfortunate that some would unsubscribe if they did not agree with you. If you would like to have your baseball and everyone have the same opinion, it is a short boat ride to Cuba!"

With Jorge Posada retiring J.B. writes, "As a rabid Red Sox fan, there are very few Yankee players I admire. Besides Jeter, Jorge Posada is a class act whom I do admire."

With the passing of Mr. Bowling, Don Carter R.P. displayed an eagle eye. "It's interesting to note that the men watching Don Carter bowl in the seats behind him were wearing suits. I knew they did back then for baseball games, but bowling?"
Editor's note: Wonder the last time somebody wore a tie at a bowling facility?

5. Spanning the World

This week's Spanning the World highlight, fitting enough, comes from the world of bowling. Who says it isn't a contact sport? And nobody got hurt!
Spanning the World airs monthly on NBC's Today Show.
Next up: Thursday January 26th in the 8:30am half hour.

Happy Birthday: Kevin Mitchell, who while playing for the Giants made a bare-handed catch. 50.
Bonus Birthday: Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus. 51.

Today in Sports: Now that's a Hall of Fame class. 30 years ago today, Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson were elected to Cooperstown. 1982.
Bonus Event for tomorrow January 14: The Today Show goes on the air and hasn't left. 60 years and counting. 1952.

Fun Fact: Among the places the Top 5 email was opened this week were Thailand, Denmark, Mali and South Korea. But it wasn't opened once in Montana.
