Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 8, 2010 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.
1. Quick Hits
* The NBA Finals shift to Boston tonight for game 3. The Celtics and Lakers are tied one game apiece.
* The Washington Nationals selected slugging catcher/outfielder Bryce Harper from the College of Southern Nevada with the #1 pick in the baseball draft.
* Last year's #1 pick, pitcher Stephen Strasburg, makes his much anticipated major league debut tonight at sold out Nationals Park in Washington against Pittsburgh.
* Commissioner Bud Selig, despite the "imperfect game," doesn't sense a movement to increase instant replay in baseball.
* The Cleveland Cavaliers are interested in Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo.
2. It's Drafty in Here
The baseball draft is as tricky as they come. For every Ken Griffey, Jr. and Alex Rodriguez (both Seattle), there is a Steve Chilcott and a Shawn Abner (both Mets). They were all #1 overall picks. The last time the Yankees had a #1 pick they chose pitcher Brien Taylor in 1991. He ruined his shoulder in a bar fight. In fact only two #1 picks, never played a game in the majors -- Taylor, and Chilcott. The last #1 pick to win Rookie of the Year honors? Darryl Strawberry, 1980. Roughly half the #1 overall picks go on to become All Stars. Hey in baseball, batting .500 ain't half bad.
3. A Fitting Tribute
Thanks to subscriber Jay R. for this video. Talk about class. One L.A. legend announcing the passing of another. The great Vin Scully, on the scoreboard of Dodger Stadium the other night talking about John Wooden. I guarantee you he didn't use teleprompter, and he did it in one take. Enjoy.
4. Fan Fare
W.C. Fields said "On the whole I'd rather be in Phildelphia." But probably not for a baseball game. Lets recap. A fan ran on the field and got tased. Another fan got arrested for vomiting on a policeman's kid. And the other day TV cameras caught a 3 or 4 year old toddler swigging beer. Now if they could only get that 4 year old kid from Indonesia who smokes two packs a day to go to a Phillies game, they will have "hit for the cycle."
5. What are You Wearing?
Looking for that perfect Father's Day gift for that soccer-crazy Dad in your life? Get him a bottle of Eau de Stade. Stade, as in Stadium. Yup, just in time for the World Cup, they've got some great smelling perfume. Actually its for men or women. Close your eyes and you're transported into a soccer stadium. The whiff of grass, the hint of a sea breeze, and of course that lovely smell of sweat. I love the concept. You can now pay for B.O. Or you can just look at the ad for Eau de Stade with British TV personality Rachel Stevens dressed in England's colors and get over-heated. Your choice.
Happy Birthday: How come so many tennis players are born in June? Lindsay Davenport. 34. Kim Clijsters. 27.
Bonus Birthday: Joan Molinsky, otherwise known as Joan Rivers. 77.
Today in Sports: Mickey Mantle day at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees retire the Mick's #7. 1969.
Bonus Event: I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream, which was manufactured commercially for the first time in New York City. 1786.
