In case you haven't noticed, geek girls are on top of the world. We're taking over the big screen ("Bridesmaids" anyone?), the small screen (is there a show Whitney Cummings isn't working on this season?) and all the media in between (Tina Fey's book, "Bossypants," is now my Bible). Want to know which lovely ladies will this fall? Stop playing "Words With Friends," press pause on your DVR'd episode of the "True Blood" season finale and check out which geek girls you'll be falling for this autumn. Oh, and be sure to pick up your copy of "Geek Girls Unite: How Fangirls, Bookworms, Indie Chicks and Other Misfits Are Ruling the World." It's required reading and you don't want to fail the pop quiz next period.
As for Whitney, who's mentioned in the article, that's not working out. At all.
True geekdom is earned. By years of hard work. And no, being a girl geek, even at a high school with very high accomplishment, is not cool to the other students. Most of the geeks have at least one immigrant parent who do not care about the social games at high school - Chinese Tiger Mom, Indian Elephant Mom, Russian Bear Father, etc anyone.
As for my daughter, she is 14 and in 10th grade. She will get college credit for her calculus and will take AP tests for her other courses. She is off to the college/university next year for a career in engineering.
