When we heard Jon Stewart make his big announcement about the Rally to Restore Sanity, we signed up immediately. We made our hotel reservations and our flight plans from California. Why would two older people like us want to go to Washington DC for a "comedy rally"? Because it's not a comedy rally actually. It may be seriously funny in a serious and funny way, but what we really are wanting to experience is a sense that the 80% of us who are still sane, still care enough to do this. It doesn't matter what age we are or what race we are. We ARE the 80%, who have been relatively silent in the past two years.

Watching Glenn Beck a few weeks ago, I realized that while there were people of my age there, I didn't see in their faces what I feel in my own heart about America and our President, Barack Obama. I support the President and think he is doing an exceptional job. I don't like everything he has done or not done, but I am not angry at him. I am not angry at the Congress. I know enough to know they try their best, but when they don't hear from the 80% of us, they have to respond to the 20% who are really angry -- and not always sure at what or why. I am not angry at Wall Street even. Wall Street operates perfectly rationally with the rules we give it -- if we give it different rules, we will get a different result. I am not angry at corporations either. I worked for quite a few and they generally do what they do in a rational way as well. If we don't hold them accountable, they will maximize their profit as they always have.

So when Jon Stewart said that the 80% of us who have been more or less a silent majority could have an opportunity to show how we really feel about our country, we jumped at the chance to do just that. I have no idea how this will turn out, and I know some have criticized the scheduling of this -- because it is the weekend before the midterm elections and we should be at home supporting our local politicians. What I hope this rally will do is to give the 80% of us some motivation to vote, to get our friends and neighbors out to vote, and give us the chance to be with people who feel like we do. We don't need a flag or a preacher to get us fired up. We should be able to be fired up and READY TO GO on our own -- but thankfully, Stewart and Colbert will help us have some fun about it.

See you in DC!

I went to the 1963 March on Washington. When I saw the last summers "Restoring Honor" gathering abusing the memory of Martin Luther King I wrote this song. You can view it by following this URL:

IF You like it please pass it on.

This sounds like it's going to be lots of fun. Colbert asked people yesterday to wear costumes. Instead of the anger and hate and vitriol we've been seeing at those Tbagger events, it will be nice to have a gathering of civil, friendly , and sane people with no loaded assault rifles and nasty signs.

I'm also flying out to DC from California and proud that this will be my first political rally. Generations before me have set the high water mark of bravery, earnest solidarity, and personal integrity as they decided to travel to and make a stand upon the National Mall, surrounded by monuments meant to simultaneously humble and elevate us while we pay tribute to those things we hold so dear -- Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of .....

... PARTY DUDE!... this is going to be kick ass! Can't wait to hang out with my fellow slacker and Gen Xer Jon Stewart as we take a stand in this age of echo-chambered information silos and nit-picking news-cycle vampires ready to sell their souls for a fractional ratings uptick.

We haven't lost hope... NO... because we are the moderate masses, and though it took Stewart's magnetic Midas touch of irony to get us off our complacent asses and actually show up for once.... show up we will. Let there be no doubt about it, folks. I can feel it in my bones.

Philosophy majors still working at Starbucks, Noam Chomsky groupies, hipster douche nozzles from Williamsburg and the Mission District. We'll all be there, sipping lattes from our camelbacks and plotting the communist takeover of Glen Beck's lacrimnal glands and the confirmation of a cadre of Marxist, polyamorous supreme court justices.

Ahhh, the smell of it... See you there comrades!

This rich, old white guy will be flying from California for the event. I've had enough of the old farts at my country club swallowing the idiocy of Beck and his coterie and railing against our President just because they're petrified that their millions may get taxed at 39% rather than 35%. It's time that my generation stands up for what's right and, in difficult times like these, takes one for the team. I hope to see a lot of gray-haired
attendees in the audience holding up signs. Mine will have SANITY, NOT HANNITY on one side and
FOX NEWS: UNFETTERED BY FACTS on the other.

Somebody's still laughing. Jon Stewart's announcement of his Rally for sanity is close to breaking a million hits on Comedy Central's home page. Stewart's has had more than 898,000 hits since his announcement and Stephen Colbert's announcement has had more than 494,000 hits.

I'd think that would be newsworthy. But check for yourself.

Hmmm, no pending comments and the most recent is from two hours ago. Any why was my very mild comment never published....someone trying to minimize the numbers of us who heartily agree with this march for moderation?!

I'll be there with my wife. My wife is even looking forward to it, and she hates all politics, doesn't bother keeping track of any of it, even had to ask me who Glen Beck was.
So glad we both have the vacation time and money to go.

My wife and I booked last night. Encouragingly, the Hilton Garden Inn off Pennsylvania Ave. where we would normally stay was totally booked. We ended up at the Hyatt @ Dulles South. A Metro Bus to Le Enfant and we are there!
This really is a chance for a reply to the radical fringe and maybe underscore that there may be a majority ready for the changes that are needed.
See you there!
Sanity Yes!
Fear...ehhh...not so much.

My wish is to see one million plus people at this rally! All political stripes, all religions or none at all but a huge group of us saying the extremes on both sides have taken over the conversation and NEITHER EXTREME SPEAKS FOR US!! I've not attended any political rallies in my life, this time It's Important!

I'm glad to see you're fired up and I am with you.

Too bad we can't get a little help out of the HP. I had to search hard to even find your column. We've got a chance to pull of a political Woodstock and its not even getting off the ground.

Here's what a search for the rallies turned up.

And here's a site dedicated to the rally that is having a really hard time getting off the ground.

Gee, I found it on the political tab and wasn't even looking for it. There are a couple of others that mention this as well.

Now if you go to the offical Facebook events there are discussions for the offical even, various different cities that are holding sister events, and well, they don't seem to be having any problem getting going.

Thanks for you help. I admit I'm not too skilled at this. But I am excited.

However, one thing I protest is constantly being pushed to Facebook and Twitter. I don't understand why everyone in the media promotes them.

You must be way better than I am. I just clicked on the political tab and still didn't find it.
