John McCain, A Veteran Was Demeaned In Your Name. Will You Defend Her?

Posted: 07/05/2012 8:36 am

This past Sunday, Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh, who never served a day in the military, shamelessly questioned the heroism of his Congressional opponent, Illinois Army National Guard veteran and double amputee, Major Tammy Duckworth.

Using Senator John McCain as his foil to demean Duckworth, Walsh smeared Duckworth's service and undermined her sacrifice. Americans nationwide, across ideology and political party, were disgusted by Walsh's comments:

I, too, was disgusted. I've long admired Tammy Duckworth. I've admired her since first learning her story. I even wrote about her in 2006 on the heels of her first Illinois Congressional campaign and subsequent defeat by Republican Peter Roskam -- another non-veteran.

Today, having recently endured my own health challenges, I respect Tammy Duckworth even more. She's a hero of immeasurable -- make that incomprehensible -- dignity and strength.

Over the past eighteen months I've been challenged by Stage 4 Lymphoma, the difficult chemotherapy to treat it, and heart disease that required a stent in my right coronary artery. It's been an interesting journey and one I've been reluctant to discuss. I'm intensely private.

At this time, I'm happily in remission and feel no ill effects from the cancer, chemo or heart disease. Some may say what I faced was severe. At times, in the throes of the chemo, I would have agreed. But by and large I've felt I had it rather easy (though my oncologist disagrees). I drove myself to and from treatments and walked into the infusion room on my own, while many around me were wheeled. Often while in my oncologist's lobby, or the chemo room, I filled with tears as fellow warriors battled their pain. I, too, was in pain, but somehow it seemed a lot less because I could control my own movement. I felt fortunate then. I feel fortunate now.

Today I ride my bicycle twelve miles to my oncologist and cardiologist. Other than the fog of chemo that has made it so difficult to write, I don't have much to complain about. I'm a very lucky woman.

I haven't written about any of this until now. I'm pathologically private. But I write of it now for a reason. I write of it now because as much as I believe I've stepped up to my challenges and met my personal expectations to prevail, I'm no Tammy Duckworth. I've never been to war. I've never dealt with amputation. I'm not challenged in my movements. I've returned to my former activities as though the last eighteen months weren't real. When the effects of the chemo diminished and I stopped being winded when I walked, I forgot my discomforts and returned to my regular life.

But it's not the same for Tammy Duckworth. She will deal with the ravages of war and the travails of amputation for the rest of her life. Yet amazingly -- astonishingly -- she prevails. Despite her irreparable wounds and her crutches and prostheses, Tammy Duckworth has endured the mental and physical challenges of the position of Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and two rigorous Congressional campaigns. No wonder she's so admired.

Considering the overwhelming condemnation Joe Walsh has received, it's fair to say that across the political spectrum, Americans share my regard for Tammy Duckworth. Veterans, in particular, are outraged at Walsh. Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org PAC, Jon Soltz, even called for Walsh's resignation from Congress. But disturbingly, John McCain, who was Walsh's singular foil in demeaning Tammy Duckworth, remains silent.

McCain, who's talked often of his military service both on and off the campaign trail, and of his special connection to vets, previously crossed party lines to support his fellow veterans. Most famously, during the Clinton administration, McCain worked closely with Democratic Senator and Vietnam veteran John Kerry on POW/MIA affairs.

If the military is truly non-partisan, shouldn't allegiance to veterans trump allegiance to party? I understand Senator McCain is presently in Afghanistan, but he's had ample time since Sunday to chastise Joe Walsh. Why hasn't he done so? It's not like he's been totally silent. He's tweeted the full spectrum from the Arizona Diamondbacks to his visit with the troops. Why not a tweet to defend Major Duckworth? After all, his was the name Joe Walsh mentioned. If he can tweet about baseball, he can certainly tweet about this.

Senator McCain, your fellow veteran has been attacked in your name. Will you step up to honorably defend her?

Only time will tell...

How many times can Joe Walsh say Tammy Duckworth is a hero? His point is, just because she is a hero doesn't mean she should be a Congresswoman. If you listen to his words, that is what he is saying. If you listen to loons like this blogger or the other liberal media, they intentionally misinterpret Joe Walsh's words to sound like he is disrespecting Tammy Duckworth's service. Any non-partisan and objective person could easily see this. Notice this blogger's emphasis that neither Joe Walsh nor Peter Roskam are veterans - as if that alone should disqualify either man from winning. What the blogger conveniently fails to mention is that President Obama is a non-veteran as well. If you extrapolate the blogger's comments to the President, it would be fairly easy to draw a conclusion that the blogger doesn't believe the President should hold office over any veteran. There are many non-veterans on both sides of the aisle currently serving. Should we just impeach each one of them now?

It was neither the 'blogger' nor the 'liberal media' who made him look like a boor.

Go view the video of him saying those things - he damned himself from his own mouth.

I read the quote...would the video add anything I am missing?  Do you agree or disagree that people are intentionally misinterpreting his remarks to make him look bad?  Do you agree or disagree with his statement that indicates that the fact she is a war hero does not automatically qualify her for public office?  Do you agree or disagree it owuld be easy to make the jump, based on the logic put forth in the blog, that Obama is unfit for the presidency?  that any representative, regardless of political party affiliation, is unfit to serve if he or she is not a war vet?

"A veteran was demeaned in your name. Will you defend her?" This is the question asked of John McCain. Here is the answer:

Not on your life. It's Party over morals, any day.

Don't hold your breath. War hero McCain sold his dignity and honor in the last election cycle. What's left is an empty husk of raging resentment.

Instead of the media "talking" about people like Walsh, the Democrats should take advantage of those things and make political ads out of them and show them across this country. It's a no-brainer.

The contemptable remarks by the incindiary Walsh will probably see the end of his political career in due course. However, liberals appearing on this board would perhaps be careful not to cross a line into their own hypocrisy.

I offer Exhibit One. Namely, the HUFFINGTON POST itself on June 14, 2012 when it ran this board article heading:

''Jesse Kelly Drops Out Of House Race Following Ron Barber Win For Gabrielle Giffords Seat''

This race pitted the Republican Kelly, an honorably-discharged Iraq War combat veteran who led a mortar squad in the 7th Marines pitted against Ron Barber, a candidate with a civilian career from Tucson. The following is a sample of response to the Barber win.

''Good. teabbaagger garbage got thrown out''

''We don't need another NAZI..''

''Klanbagger like a fungus..wont go away''.

''KKK bagger must be destroyed''

And hundreds more in the same vein. Liberals occupy no higher moral ground as a result [merely acting as bad as Walsh anyway] and should save their pontificating for the Revelation.

It's very sad when you compare the comments of HP posters to those a serving Congressman uttered against his political opponent.

Have you no shame?

Spitfire is right, Nathan. The comments you list here are outrageous. What Rep. Walsh said is outrageous. There is a huge difference, though, between an anonymous posting on a website and making these comments as an elected representative in his campaign for federal office.

I live in New York st. I am well aware of John McCains service and POW ordeal. If he didn't talk about it a lot of other people sure did.
I think all war is a failure of civilization, war is the worst choice of the last resort. Our soldiers are not involved in the politics of war. Each and everyone of them sacrifice for this country. My cynicism has no hold on the people serving. They are the leading citizens of this country.
Politicians ...well ...I don't want to get censored. Double that where walsh is concerned ...then double it again.

Honor, courage, and commitment. Ms Duckworth shows oodles of it. Walsh shows he has none of these qualities.

Tammy, as a fellow Vet, you know I know we have faced the ultimate challenges in the military. You and I are lucky to be here. We will continue to overcome, improvise and accomplish are objectives. Good luck.

Mr. Walsh, Tammy Duckworth served our country under combat conditions and is a double amputee. You didn't. Enough said.

Your story is life for many americans with cancer. Walsh did not said this lady was not a hero. He question if she has the qualification to get the office she is running for. The same as every politican does to people who run against them. This lady does not get a free pass, she is running and that is politics. I served in the marine in 1969 to 1973 and have seem military people who would do good representing thier people and I have seen other that I would not vote to represent me. This lady came but the issues on the table and run like everyone else.

Judging by Joe Walsh's remarks about Tammy Duckworth, it seems that he may be too stupid to be a leader. Even if a candidate felt the rage that he does for his opponent, voicing it in the way he does is the stupidest thing he could do. However, maybe he knows the electorate in his district; and, he knows that they agree with him. I heard some laughs from his audience when he disparaged Tammy. In that case, we should find out the boundaries of his district so that we can avoid doing business or even venturing into it.

On this, I fear, past is prologue.

Senator McCain, whose service I always respected and admired even given my political differences with him, has already failed this test.

In 2004, while infamous chickenhawk Karl Rove bore shamelessly into the actual heroic service record of Senator John Kerry -- a man with whom it was reported, Senator McCain shared a deep friendship -- Senator McCain stood silently by, without uttering a peep. After a couple of weeks of it (by which time, it turns out, it was too late), Senator Kerry let it be known that, if Viet Nam service was going to be a campaign issue, then he would let loose on the then-current President (his line was: "Anytime the other side wants to compare our service records in Viet Nam, ... bring it on!")

The next day, Sen. McCain, hopping off a bus at another joint campaign appearance with the incumbent President, was asked about the exchange. His response (which I characterized as 'meek' at the time) was to say, "Gee, I wish they'd both stop talking about it."

The luster of Senator McCain's "Mr. Veteran" image wore off, for me, at that moment. I thought then that he'd sold too much of his integrity for the partisan ambition of being the Next GOP Presidential Nominee.

I don't think he's going to say a word to Representative Walsh.

1) Ms. Duckworth had a 20 year career in the military, before being wounded.
Every candidate draws upon their life experience.

For Mr. Walsh to say that a veteran shouldn't be mentioning her experience is to say that he feels she should exclude a 20 year career from discussion.

Why on earth shouldn't she discuss and draw upon her real world experience in her campaign?

2) Mocking someone who has pledged her life to serve this nation,( and very nearly lost it in service to her nation) is a low, dirty, mean spirited trick which shows Mr. Walsh is not a leader. He's the mean kid on the playground.

Seems most repubs want to distance themselves from this walking talking cesspool. No one will defend Tammy because no one wants to be associated with the likes of Joe Walsh. Walsh is the white Allen West on steriods and if Joe were to be acknowledged by his fellow GOPTPers, it would be guilt by association.

Yet West is also a decorated combat veteran. It's OK to cap on him though as he is not a Democrat. Walsh will go when the voters of his district make such a decision.[ recalling here the defamatory remarks made by liberals also aimed at McCain in the 2008 election which accused him of faking his war and POW record and his jet accident on FORRESTAL in 1968 which were putrid at best].Like VOTEVETS, the VFW also directed its ire at those who were accusing McCain of this garbage which only accelerated as the election approached.

Former military officer West left the service one hop ahead of a court martial. Lt. Col. Duckworth served her country with honor, worked in the VA for her fellow soldiers and now is running for congress. You can't compare Allen West to Col. Duckworth.
