Now that was what I call a hell of an article, HUFFPOST....keep up the good work !
In this seemingly endless presidential campaign, parsed through the drama and hyperbole of media, it is a rare and welcome occasion when reason and honesty eclipse tantrums and untruths. It is particularly rare when pundits buck the popular trend and speak truth to corporate power. Such an occasion, or mitzvah as some might say, occurred on March 20th (2008) on CNN, when veteran political analyst David Gergen, renowned reporter and author Carl Bernstein, and CNN commentator Roland Martin, shredded the race card and taught a lesson in truth to neophyte Anderson Cooper. For the past several days, Anderson Cooper, an unseasoned political observer, has been pushing the race card as far as possible on all things Barack Obama. It's not that Cooper is any worse at assailing Obama than his counterparts at Fox, MSNBC and conservative talk radio. It's just that Cooper as a political anchor, is sorely unskilled. He's fine traversing the planet, reporting from rugged terrain. He loves pitting himself against nature -- be it a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or drought. He's terrific in stories on wildlife, and daring in the throes of war. But a savvy political anchor he is not. Nor is he a host much concerned with the ramifications of his remarks. Sadly, CNN in this election cycle, is nearly as treacherous as Fox. But on one brilliant evening in March, three media pundits put Cooper in his place by refusing to derail Barack Obama. Here's how it happened: On his March 20th AC 360 show on CNN, Anderson Cooper was reporting on Barack Obama's depiction of his grandmother as a "typical white woman." Behind Cooper in the background was a huge image of Obama (see video above) with a prominent graphic that read, "New Race Problem." Cooper played the video of Obama explaining his grandmother's concerns and similar cross-cultural fears existing in America for years. As stated by Obama:
"Some of the fears of street crime and some of the stereotypes that go along with that were responses that I know many people feel. She's [my grandmother's] not extraordinary in that regard... Good people, people who are not in any way racist are still subject to some of these images and stereotypes."Anderson Cooper's inflammatory response:
"Well, those [Obama's] comments touched off another uproar on the blogs and on some cable commentators who accused him [Obama] of calling all white people racists.""CALLING ALL WHITE PEOPLE RACISTS"?! How can Cooper imply this from Obama's explanation? Realistically he cannot. But what he can do, and did do, is use the hyperbole of others to divert the furor from himself. The fact is, real journalists don't report hyperbole. Real journalists report fact. Cooper isn't a journalist. He's an adventurer with a prime time slot -- and he got caught. Cooper could have easily taken the high road and accepted the cogent explanation by Obama. Instead Cooper dove head first into the gutter and exploited Obama in tabloid terms. As a result, "host" Anderson Cooper was instantly repudiated by seasoned political analyst and CNN Senior Correspondent, David Gergen, who was guesting on Cooper's show. Gergen responded with:
"Anderson, I have to tell after listening to all this and what he [Obama] further said, I sort of think YOU OUGHT TO GET A GRIP ON REALITY HERE. I mean, he's [Obama's] RIGHT about the fact that certain people have stereotypes in their heads!"Thank you, David Gergen! What a breath of fresh air! What a remarkable moment when a corporate media pundit FINALLY tells the truth. David Gergen, the adult in the room, refused Cooper's race bait and set the record straight. With corporate media seemingly hell bent on derailing Obama, the importance of Gergen's candor cannot be overlooked. But it didn't stop there. It got even better!! After David Gergen's statement, Cooper turned to renowned journalist Carl Bernstein, a new contributor to CNN. Just like Gergen, Bernstein embraced the veracity of Obama's explanation and echoed Gergen and Obama's contention that stereotypes exist. Bernstein went on to tell Cooper that a higher standard for journalism was in order. Like Gergen, Bernstein deflected the race card and instead spoke the truth. As Bernstein stated:
"The race genie is out of the bottle and Obama has called for an elevated conversation about race -- and what we are seeing here is the bottom of the barrel conversation -- a talk show nation hysteria... As long as we keep pulling these threads out, we're not going to have any kind of meaningful debate in this campaign. And David's absolutely right. He [Obama] spoke a truth! ... "
"It's interesting, you know Roland, that these are not the kinds of conversation that television or radio programs... in this heightened atmosphere does very well. It's a difficult conversation to have and it's a very nuanced conversation to have in a political environment which is all about sound bytes and people yelling on television."To which Roland Martin responded:
"But we don't have to do what they do. We can call for something different... "Cooper was completely shut down. Thank you David Gergen and Carl Bernstein, with support from Roland Martin. You did as Barack Obama suggested and elevated the discussion. Rather than lowering the discourse to the race baiting Cooper wanted, you provided a rare opportunity for truth. Thanks to all three of you. Hopefully Anderson Cooper, the not ready for prime time host, will follow your lead. AC 360 has a segment called "Keeping Them Honest." Perhaps Mr. Cooper will apply that standard to himself!

The media goes after Bill Clinton for "accusing Barack of being unpatriotic" -- which he quite clearly wasn't -- but defends Barack for using the expression "typical white person" to characterize his grandmother.
Sometimes the truth hurts. I know a lot of white people feel that way. I am white raised in a military environment growing up. My father always said everyone is the same except for the color. I had black girlfriends that spent the night at my house and I spent the night at theirs. Dad was right there was nothing different but color. When my mother went to have her baby my black girlfriend's mother cooked for us and the same went the other way. People are the same. I know if there were a group of young men either white or black I would cross the street because I don't like being teased about my weight and believe me I have had that experience. We need to be fair Sen Obama is half white and black. He knows what he is saying. Just because he said what is true people are going crazy. It is funny I know alot of people on the right are the most pissed because they know what he said is true.
I am so glad someone else noticed this. That night not only 360 blew the remark out of proportion but Lou Dobbs had assaulted Obama earlier (that seems to be his new program, assaulting Obama daily), Campbell Brown had held a panel discussion on the remark, and then Anderson Cooper expanded the attack du jour. I wrote CNN about this and told them it felt like a lynching of Obama to me, and that this white woman (me) did not like it. I too appreciated Gergen, Bernstein, and Martin's adult comments. Thank you for bringing attention to this extreme attention to minutiae.
After NEVER tuning in to the Clinton News Network, I tuned in to Anderson Cooper's show on that particular night, and after hearing Anderson start with that line, I decided to change the channel.
You have things a bit out of order here. First, after months of trying to get a one-on-one behind the scenes interview with Obama, the AC 360 team got the call late in the afternoon of 3/18/08. Nearly the entire show on 3/19/08 was devoted to Obama, and did not reflect any bias one way or another. But on the morning of 3/20/08 during an interview on a Philadelphia radio show, Obama made a comment regarding his grandmother saying "But she is a typical white person..." Cooper pointed out that those words touched off another uprorar on the blogs, and among some cable commentators, who accused him (Obama) of calling all white people racists." And Cooper was right. Those words did spark a new controversy.
Cooper then aired parts of an interview Larry King had with Obama that evening, where Obama gave his explanation of "stereotypes". Cooper then turned to the 3 commentators for their response. If you would only re-read the transcripts from the 3/20/08 AC 360 show, you will see that the judgements you are making regarding Cooper are taken out of context, the same thing you are accusing Cooper of doing. Cooper is very careful in not making judgements, but several of his commentators do (both for and against), then Cooper leaves it up to his audience to decide for themselves.
You might also want to point out that on the 3/21/08 AC 360 blog, Roland Martin was allowed to post the entire sermon Rev. Wright made both on 9/16/01 regarding 9/11 and the April 2003 sermon regarding "God Damn America". They were one of the first blogs to post the entire sermons, even sooner than the Huffington Post.
Obama's words of "typical white person"sparked a new controversy because Anderson Cooper and other media idiots spend all day discussing them. It is a self-fullfilling prophecy.
Yes I have to agree with criscokid. Cooper is ALOT more responsible than others. He tries to see both sides of the story. I give him and Rick Sanchez credit for elevating the standard of news. Americans deserve better.
Yes! Finally, a voice of reason.
"Cooper is very careful in not making judgements, but several of his commentators do (both for and against), then Cooper leaves it up to his audience to decide for themselves." - Exactly.
Thank you.
Everything you see on CNN is scripted. Bernstein was right to say that the media is parsing every single nuance searching for something incendiary. There is always that editorial choice as to what contitutes news. Anderson Cooper, formerly the host of the television show "The Mole", is an entertainer and should not be tought of as Edward R. Murrow or Walter Cronkite. If this is the new standard in journalism, it sucks.
Have to say too, that agree i that Cooper did NOT play it as HIS judgement but poised it for the panel as for an assist in enlightening more the differing perspectivities in a somewhat INTELLIGENT conversement style...LOL, a case of damned if do or don't and yes too, in trying to highlight it got taken OUT of full context which was used to deride Cooper of doing such to Obama.
Folks, the Obama remark regarding his Grandmother of being a "typical white" response IS on the money more often than NOT especially by the generation of his Grandmother and even more recent ones as well. True, the present "younger generation" has had opportunity to widen their interactions/activities and be exposed to "others" which in turn CAN lessen "stereo-typical" 'fears", but it does NOT yet encompass all, thankfully thou, more than ever before and here's to hoping the numbers who can deal with the realities and wonk to close the gaps/holes/etc become a fuller, diverse majority who ARE willing to work/wonk together FOR THE GREATER COMMON GOOD OF ALL !!!
this is very sad....these desperate comments trying to derailed Obama prove that they can't take the idea of an african american President....they can handle Tiger Woods or Jay Z or Bill Cosby or Halle Berry or Denzell or Oprah but an african american in the POTUS it's too much for the media and their bosses.....
Realrick,
Thank you for that informative information. I didn't even think about the corporations that truly don't want Obama looking into anythiing at all.
I wish to thank the writer of this article. What I would like to add is this, CNN late Sunday night, with Rich Sanchez did something that no other news agency would do, and that is they played the Rev. Wright before the inflammatory statements and after the inflammatory remark statements. After I heard the WHOLE thing, I knew that the Rev. was just preaching...like most Reverends they get wound up and and it becomes like a revival. I suggest to you, DiDi47, that you look or listen to the WHOLE statement, not just the sound bite, and base your opinion on that. And for a person that has sat through two hour sermons, the preachers do get carried away, nobody walks out because IN CONTEXT you can follow along with what Rev. Wright was saying. We have, supposedly the freedom of speech. America has proven that there really isn't any freedom of speech. Everything Rev. Wright said was truthful in the context of that sermon. He said, "God d.... the United States IF IT DOESN'T STOP ACTING LIKE GOD."
Anderson Cooper is a great field reporter but political anchor, no. I'm not sure why CNN is pushing the elections onto him when it is obviously not a good fit. Lately I've been watching BBC America World News since they actually do news stories instead of all talking heads all the time.
The problem as I see it is that there is no reporting, what CNN and MSNBC do is just comment on warmed-over headlines from the NYT and the wire services.
Instead, they fill airtime with commentators, most of whom are paid shills, and they fill up the hours of programming with "responses" to the headlines.
The only problem with this is that Fox has become a right-wing propaganda tool, and rather then just being biased, is now pursuing an active agenda of getting a Republican elected. There is nothing fair and accurate in their reporting, and they are not following mainstream journalistic standards.
CNN and MSNBC, because they are more passive in their approach, will then "chase" Fox's headlines the same way they chase those in the NYT, and thus we get a watered-down Fox slant to the other newsstations.
Fox is setting the agenda for the rest of our TV news, and that's scary.
barackblogger:
What's unfair about telling Americans the truth about Rev. Wright?
If it's the whole truth, then fine. If i's a characture of the truth taken out of context, then it's meant to be misleading.
because when I saw the actual sermon and not a 5-sec. soundbite, I had a very diff. impression of what the rev. was saying, and I agreed with him.
You can't reason with Didi47. If he/she was really genuine (and not just a GOP operative or Obama basher), there are some significant issues with which to be much more outraged with regards to McCain & Clinton. He/she talks about the truth, yet has no real interest in it... or at least doesn't possess much in the way of intellectual curiosity.
Anderson Cooper is an adolescent with gray hair and adolescents do not have the maturity to comprehend the essence of Obama's speech on race. I lost my respect for CNN and refuse to watch it and it's overt favoritism to Hillary. The Clintons are wealthy and powerful, and CNN is there to prove it!
White Americans only!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you think that you could have lived as a black person in the Jim Crow South? How would you have coped? What would you have done to survive? What would have been the most difficult thing for you as a young black person to have accepted or coped with in Mississippi or Georgia at the peak of Jim Crow terrorism?
Answer the same questions from the perspective of a young white person.
Why? I'm an African-American, and I want to talk about ending the war in Iraq and making America more prosperous. Barack was right to avoid the whole issue of race. Only the media and the right-wingers who are upset about affirmatie action are worried about race to the extent that they want to have a national referendum on race and whether a black candidate is electable. Most blacks that I know feel that th laws on the books are serving the black community. At the local level, we continue to fight for a fairer justice system, but that has little to do with national politics at the moment. Most of the cases coming before the Supreme Court these days have to do with affirmative action, and not cases were blacks are requesting changes to laws that we find unconstitutional.
There was more to this post. Here's he rest:
What is at issue here is that the corporate news media is giving us gutter yellow journalism. We need a meaningful debate. Not this sensationalism on race. Obama is about solving these issues. The media is about making it worse than what it is.
Maybe if he got the "tingle up his leg" like Chris Matthews or stroked himself under his desk when speaking of Obama like Olbermann does, you would not be so mad at him :(
What the writer deliberately failed to mention - is - Coopers reaction to Rev. Wright - and Obama's 20 year 'close relationship' with the man - is right on the button! Just about everyone who has seen the tape... is just as appalled as Cooper is about it. He had a normal and understandable reaction and the question asked of Obama... why on earth did you choose this anti white - anti - semite - anti American as your mentor and stay at his side for the last 20 years...?.. is not only valid... it is one that must be addressed!
Bernstein & Gergen can pooh pooh it all they like and downplay it all they like... and try to convince the viewer that the tapes and Obama's half a life time association with this divisive bigot is 'not really that serious' and we should just move on..' mantra. But I think the time has come that the viewer has had enough of the non stop anti Hillary - pro Obama publicity the networks have shoved down our throats for the past 4 months.
Bernstein and Gergen try to give us "ignorant viewers" the impression that they are the wise do alls and end alls - of politics... and that they are the ones, who need to tell us how to feel and how to interpret - the strong distaste we feel over Obama's relationship with Wright (not to mention the other lies he's been caught on) ... is wrong and misdirected.. Well here's some news for them for a change... their bias toward Obama is so obvious it has become not only insulting ... it's revolting. How come Obama has gotten a carte blanche on CNN's air time the last 3 months.. How come - no matter how many times this guy's screw ups are exposed... they somehow manage to turn Obama's screw ups into a Hillary problem? Bernstein and Gergen are nothing other than long winded repetitive - pro Obama wind bags - that imagine they are much smarter most of the 'common folk' and therefore have to tell the viewer how to think. Here's a newsflash... they are not.
"Obama's 20 year 'close relationship' with the man - is right on the button! Just about everyone who has seen the tape... is just as appalled as Cooper is about it"
Not true at all - just polled 72% agree with Barack's explanation. Be careful with "just about everyone" because its a lie.
LAJonathan:
70% of who polled? Polls can be rigged in skewed any way the pollster wants it to. And I stand by my 'just about everyone' - or let me correct that: I meant to say - just about everyone in their right mind - is/was as appalled as Cooper over Rev. Wright's preachings!
I was not. Pastor Wright was referring to the remarks made by a white American former ambassador to Iraq. The ambassador himself said regarding our policies that "the chickens are coming home to roost." In fact, many evangelical preachers blame 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina on America's immorality. Of course, I am probably not in my right mind because I refuse to be led around by the media or right-wing race baiters.
Wolf Blitzer, Lou Dobbs and the other Pundits on CNN are biased. Lou Dobbs's remarks are especially offensive to people of color. On their blog ...if you have a positive comment about Barack Obama they won't even post it. Anderson Cooper is probably doing what his booses tell him will boost ratings. I think that all of the networks are beating a dead horse regarding this issue and should stop.
oracle99:
Boy talk about using the race card. What are you going to do.. accuse anyone who disagrees with the Obama camp - of being a racist?
Get real!
No, but playing up the racial controversies and other charges are what sells in the media, as opposed to policy discussions.
the other night i watched anderson cooper spend a day in the campaign of barack obama. obama
was nothing less than respectful, engaging, honest and well humored with anderson. in turn, anderson took every opportunity to behave like a spoiled, ignorant, naive child. no matter what obama was talking about, anderson had the rev. wright tape running in the background(ad nauseum!). he pointed out the bad food on the campaign plane, had the cameras scan throughout the plane only to land on the one member of the obama team who "happened" to be dressed in foreign garb. as the day came to a close and obama was asked what he did at day's end, obama joked about watching 360. i thought anderson's comments at this point were beyond rude, insulting and embarassing to mostly himself.
he offers that obama is pandering to him and that he(anderson) is not in need of obama pandering. please take this guy off the air and send him back to some boarding school far, far, away from any news show. he is so socially unsophisticated, unintelligent, angry, and seems still like an acting out adolescent.
with many axes to grind.
Cooper is out of his depth here, politics is not something he's really qualified to cover. You guys should cut him some slack. On the bright side: Hurricane season is only a couple months away, maybe Cooper can get back to what he's good at.
